The “Coffee Rejuvenation Strategies in Vietnam” has risked not being complete on schedule, with the low survival rate of seedlings on replanted soil, due to the nutrient loss and imbalance supplements after a long-term of monoculture and intensive cultivation. In this study, measures, including biochemical and organic treatments were applied to replanted coffee farm, in order to supplement the loss of nutrient cycling. Survival rate, growth indicators, and soil properties from the controls and treatments, were monitored and compared during the experimental periods. The results suggested the optimal tillage model as follow: Remove old coffee trees with their stumps and roots; liming 1.5 tons/ha; dry tillage soil for the first 6 months; Intercrop Mexican marigold (Tagetes erecta) with new coffee plants for the next 6 months; From the second year, apply 5 kg of microbial organic fertilizer /hole/year; bury 30 kg of green manure/hole/2–3 years; apply NPK fertilizers according to the governmental recommended procedure. -

Entomol. 87(6): 1718-1725 (1994) ABSTRACT Experiments were conducted to determine speed of action and toxicities of extracts of Tagetes minuta L., a source of naturally occurring insecticidal compounds. LC50 values for male and female Mexican bean weevils, Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman), were determined for /loral, foliar, and root extracts of T. minuta. The 24-h LCso values ranged from 138 lJ-g/cm2 for males exposed to the root extract (most susceptible) to 803 wlJcm2 for females exposed to the foliar extract (least susceptible). Increasing the duration of exposure 2 to 48 h decreased all LCso values 20-30 lJ-g/cm • Males were more susceptible than females. The time to incapacitation for 50% of the test insects (IT 50) for floral and foliar extracts indicated fast-acting, volatile components, whereas the root extract data indicated slower-acting components, likely a result of the interaction of photophase with time- dependent efficacy. Floral and foliar extracts of T. minuta may be useful as insecticides for controlling stored-product pests. Therefore a comprehensive review of the literature was conducted to summarize the pharmacological and clinical effects of Rosa canina L. to reevaluate its usefulness in traditional medicine. For various preparations of rose hip and rose hip and seed, antioxidative and antiinflammatory effects have been demonstrated. Lipophilic constituents are involved in those mechanisms of action. The proprietary rose hip and seed powder LitozinR has been employed successfully in a number of exploratory studies in patients suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and low back pain. However, the sizes of the clinical effects for the different indications need to be determined to assure clinical significance. There is also a rationale behind the use of LitozinR as part of a hypocaloric diet based on the rose hip probiotic, stool regulating and smooth muscle-relaxing actions, as well as the rose hip seed lipid-lowering, antiobese and antiulcerogenic effects. -

Windows to the Outside World-——– 5-6 Prizes and Awards ———————–- 7 Since our last newsletter, my husband and I traveled to the ARS National Con- Roses In Review————————— 8-9 vention in Tyler, Texas. This whirlwind weekend began with the Board Meeting on Rose Arrangement Workshop———– 10 Thursday, taking care of important ARS business. Following that was the Rose Show, Rose Arrangement School————— 11 held at the Rose Center in Tyler. This time, we didn’t bring any roses, since it was the Coming Events/Rose Show Dates—— 11 middle of October. Although that month was particularly dry, the timing of our blooms was off, and we didn’t have any worthy specimens. Old Garden Roses: The National Rose Show was rather small, although there were some beautiful What Are They?—–—————– 12-16 blooms, and some varieties we hadn’t seen before. After judging, we volunteered to guide Hybrid Gallicas——— 12-13 Damasks—————– 13-14 the busloads of visitors around the show. It turned out there weren’t that many on Friday, Albas——————— 14 but we did manage to greet a few nice folks. -

R. iliensis is a rare, endangered, narrow-endemic species growing in floodplains of the Ili and Sharyn rivers of Almaty region. The flower volatiles have been investigated with the tandem of MSD-SPME and GC-MS/FID techniques. The seed lipids were extracted from the ripe fruits with microextraction technique. The flower volatiles of R. iliensis three populations were characterized by the abundance of oxygenated monoterpenes with benzaldehyde (13.3-38.7 %) and citronellol (2.6-8.8 %) as the major constituents. There were detected significant differences in floral scents between the populations. The flowers of P-I (from Sharyn River) contain sesquiterpene -elemene (8.8%), the flowers of P-II (upper reaches of the Ili River) were rich in -gurjunene (12.8%), while flowers of P-III (lower reaches of the Ili River) contained any sesquiterpenes. -

College University, Lahore 54000 Pakistan, 3Department of Chemistry, University of Gujrat, Pakistan Abstract This paper reports the isolation and characterization of essential oil of Rosa centifolia. The oil was extracted from freshly collected flower petals of R. centifolia with petroleum ether using Soxhlet apparatus. Rosa centifolia showed 0.225% concrete oil and 0.128% yield of absolute oil. Some physico-chemical properties of the extracted oil like colour, refractive index, congealing point, optical rotation, specific gravity, acid number and ester number were determined and were found to be yellowish brown, 1.454 at 340C, 15°C, -32.50 to +54.21, 0.823 at 30oC, 14.10245 and 28.1876. High- resolution gas liquid chromatographic (HR-GLC) analysis of the essential oil of R. centifolia, showed the phenethyl alcohol, geranyl acetate, geraniol and linalool as major components whereas, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and citronellyl acetate were detected at trace levels. Introduction A variety of roses are generally cultivated for home and garden beautification in many parts of the world. Its rich fragrance has perfumed human history for generations (Rose, 1999). Roses contain very little essential oil but it has a wide range of applications in many industries for the scenting and flavouring purposes. It is used as perfumer in soap and cosmetics and as a flavor in tea and liquors.
