On 24 February 2020 the BFI will bring Scandal to Blu-ray for the first time worldwide, presenting it in a Dual Format Edition (includes DVD). Numerous special features include commentaries by Stephen Woolley and writer Michael Thomas, and by Michael Caton-Jones; interviews, rare short films and more. The film is simultaneously released on BFI Player, iTunes and Amazon. After becoming enchanted by exotic dancer Christine Keeler (Joanne Whalley), a politically connected doctor Stephen Ward (John Hurt) invites her to live with him. Through his contacts and parties she begins to date Conservative ministers, including Secretary of State for War John Profumo (Ian McKellen). When the affair becomes public, scandal tears through the government and threatens the lifestyles – and even the freedom – of those involved. Scandal was screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989. At the Golden Globes the following year, Bridget Fonda was nominated Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mandy Rice-Davies. This edition of the film has been newly restored from original materials. It will be launched with a special event at BFI Southbank on Thursday 13 February at 18:40. After a screening of the film in NFT1, there will be an on-stage discussion between director Michael Caton-Jones, producer Stephen Woolley, writer Michael Thomas and executive producer Joe Boyd. Focussing on the production scandal of The Keeler Affair, a feature film that figured prominently in contemporary coverage of the scandal but which has been largely overlooked since, the article shows that this film emerged from a situation in which cultural entrepreneurs, many of them associated with the satire boom, sought to exploit the scandal for financial gain.

Great Literature Collection Aldrich Ames: Traitor Within CIA operative Aldrich Ames has, like his father, always been a company man. Although not always competent, he is chief of the Counter Intelligence Soviet Branch and has few friends within the Agency. On the verge of financial ruin due to, among other things, his wife Rosario's heavy spending, the hard-drinking and desperate Ames decides to sell secrets to the Russians. His first "job" has fatal consequences for ten Russians who worked for the CIA. Ames' boss, the Chief of Operations, who is friendly toward Ames, discovers that someone within the CIA is divulging high-level information. He appoints Jeanne Vertefeuille to head up the investigation. Jeanne recruits her own older staff, derisively dubbed the "over the hill gang". Poring through an abundance of records, case files and information proves to be an awesome task and their search goes on for eight years. After a year-long stint in Rome and now with Bush in the White House, Ames continues turning over information to the Russians for millions of dollars, re-routing deposits to Swiss banks and his wife's family in Colombia. Still an alcoholic, he buys a Jaguar and moves his family to an expensive home in a plush suburb. Ames soon realizes, however, that the investigation is closing in and gets very nervous when a Russian politico who could disclose Ames' duplicity defects to America. Ames gets lucky, his treason is not yet uncovered. Ames' own actions, however, begin to draw suspicion towards him, especially when he tries to conduct his own investigation to uncover the spy within the CIA.

A HUMBLE PROTEST A LITERARY GENERATION’S QUEST FOR THE HEROIC SELF, 1917 – 1930 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jason A. Powell, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Steven Conn, Adviser Professor Paula Baker Professor David Steigerwald _____________________ Adviser Professor George Cotkin History Graduate Program Copyright by Jason Powell 2008 ABSTRACT Through the life and works of novelist John Dos Passos this project reexamines the inter-war cultural phenomenon that we call the Lost Generation. The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression. The Lost Generation rebelled against these pernicious forces which they believed existed in the forms of militarism, patriotism, progressivism, and absolutism. The

Their words changed the world. SHORT SYNOPSIS In PAUL, APOSTLE OF CHRIST, Luke risks his life to visit Paul, who is held captive in a Roman prison under Nero’s rule. Together, they struggle against a determined emperor and the frailties of the human spirit in order to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ and spread their message to the world. LONG SYNOPSIS PAUL, APOSTLE OF CHRIST is the story of two men. Luke, as a friend and physician, risks his life when he ventures into the city of Rome to visit Paul, who is held captive in Nero’s darkest, bleakest prison cell. But Nero is determined to rid Rome of Christians, and does not flinch from executing them in the grisliest ways possible. Before Paul’s death sentence can be enacted, Luke resolves to write another book, one that details the beginnings of “The Way” and the birth of what will come to be known as the church. Bound in chains, Paul’s struggle is internal. He has survived so much—floggings, shipwreck, starvation, stoning, hunger and thirst, cold and exposure—yet as he waits for his appointment with death, he is haunted by the shadows of his past misdeeds.
