    Great Literature Collection Aldrich Ames: Traitor Within CIA operative Aldrich Ames has, like his father, always been a company man. Although not always competent, he is chief of the Counter Intelligence Soviet Branch and has few friends within the Agency. On the verge of financial ruin due to, among other things, his wife Rosario's heavy spending, the hard-drinking and desperate Ames decides to sell secrets to the Russians. His first "job" has fatal consequences for ten Russians who worked for the CIA. Ames' boss, the Chief of Operations, who is friendly toward Ames, discovers that someone within the CIA is divulging high-level information. He appoints Jeanne Vertefeuille to head up the investigation. Jeanne recruits her own older staff, derisively dubbed the "over the hill gang". Poring through an abundance of records, case files and information proves to be an awesome task and their search goes on for eight years. After a year-long stint in Rome and now with Bush in the White House, Ames continues turning over information to the Russians for millions of dollars, re-routing deposits to Swiss banks and his wife's family in Colombia. Still an alcoholic, he buys a Jaguar and moves his family to an expensive home in a plush suburb. Ames soon realizes, however, that the investigation is closing in and gets very nervous when a Russian politico who could disclose Ames' duplicity defects to America. Ames gets lucky, his treason is not yet uncovered. Ames' own actions, however, begin to draw suspicion towards him, especially when he tries to conduct his own investigation to uncover the spy within the CIA.

    Monday, April 26, 2021 | No. 165 One of the things moviegoers like most about going to theatres is seeing films on the Big Screen, "the way they were meant to be seen." What people don't realize is that when films started in the mid-1890s, there were neither screens nor projectors. The very short films of that era were meant to be seen individually by looking into peep show machines in arcades. Those Kinetoscope devices were one of many inventions from Thomas Edison's factory in West Orange, NJ. Since Edison was monetizing his Kinetoscopes quite well, he had no interest in developing a machine to project film images on walls. Others, however, saw a big future in showing films to groups of people. WWW.NRCOLUMBUS.COM Thursday, December 29, 2016 75 CENTS Matthew response was a highlight of for the county By Allen Turner [email protected] Looking back on what by any stretch of the imagination was a difficult year for Columbus County, County Manager Bill Clark said Wednesday that a highlight for him of 2016 was his sense of pride at the way county employees and others responded during Hurricane Matthew and the subsequent flooding that inundated the downtown Whiteville business district and virtually destroyed downtown Fair Bluff. New schools, resumption of rail service, expansion of coun- ty water service, a decision to purchase the former Georgia- Pacific plant site and other economic development events also were major issues, Clark said, but for him the way the county pulled together and bounced back after the storm was the major event of the year. “The way we responded to the flood showed the best in us,” Clark said. “When things go bad, we pull together in Columbus County, and we really pulled together after Hurricane Matthew.” Acknowledging that some issues primarily involving com- munications arose after the storm, Clark said, “There are always going to be some issues whenever you have an event of that magnitude. Let’s be frank, we were overwhelmed by that event, but I think we responded to it very well.” Clark said he was referring not only to county employees but also to fire and rescue units throughout the county, as well as to outside agencies and volunteers.
