  • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. • The Principal's Update
Issue No 175 Friday 22nd June 2018 The Principal’s Update What a wonderfully busy, bustling day it has been at Howell's. Next year's Year 7 cohort joined us for the day, making new friends, enjoying lunch and immersing themselves in Senior School life. The girls all seemed to have a fantastic day, and went home exhausted but still smiling. I am looking forward to welcoming them back in September. GCSEs came to an end this week and we went Back to Basics at Howell’s. I have been delighted by the response from students, and have never seen such shining, polished shoes, neatly tied hair or smartly pressed skirts. Many thanks to Mrs Chyba and all the staff and students who made the week such a success. On Wednesday evening, I very much enjoyed our Parent Pyramid Social in the Hub @ Howell’s. It was lovely to chat informally with Junior School, Senior School and College parents over a glass of wine and canapés and fill them in about future initiatives and events coming up at Howell’s. As your daughter moves through the Senior School and then into the College, it can become rare for you to spend time with their friends' parents. These informal events give everyone the opportunity to meet other Howell's parents, from right across the school. Yesterday evening we opened our GCSE and A-level Art Exhibition, showcasing the fantastic work our students have created. There is so much artistic talent in our school nurtured by Mrs Eddy and the rest of the Art department, and there are some incredible pieces in the exhibition.

Golden Thread Productions presents Golden Thread Productions presents Think you know the Middle East? Think Again! Think you know the Middle East? Think Again! May Allam Artin Der Minassians May Allam Artin Der Minassians May Allam Artin Der Minassians WELCOME TO REORIENT 2019! The idea of an evening of short plays emerged from a need for our plays to include the many countries and peoples that we include in Golden Thread’s broad and inclusive definition of the Middle East. This was – and continues to be – a personal mission for me, having grown up as an Armenian minority in Iran and raised both Christian and Muslim in my mixed family. I have always wanted Golden Thread’s work to reflect the many layers of our identity, perspective, and aesthetic. But of course that is impossible even for a festival of short plays. It has become clear that no amount of clever programming can fully reflect the complexities of our lives. And so, each ReOrient becomes a litmus of our collective state of mind, which is by itself an impressive purpose to serve. This year’s ReOrient is no different. What stands out most is the singular voice of women. Women playwrights and women characters speak to us about privilege, power, and the improbability of fulfillment. Veteran playwrights and newcomers alike struggle with finding the right answers. They ask, what happens when women — particularly “ethnic” women — take power? How do we gain agency and achieve personal fulfillment? What happens when we have no control? Or when our values do not reflect those of the world we live in? These are profound questions, particularly when addressing universal concerns such as health care, immigration, and war.

  • Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES “This town – it’s all secrets. Everyone knows something you don’t” 1 The Town is a three-part contemporary drama from Big Talk Productions starring BAFTA winner Andrew Scott alongside an outstanding ensemble cast including Julia McKenzie, Charlotte Riley, Gerard Kearns, Kelly Adams and Martin Clunes. The first television series by Laurence Olivier award-winning playwright Mike Bartlett, The Town follows a shocking incident within an otherwise normal family. Mark Nicholas (Scott) returns to the town where he grew up to find his grandmother Betty (McKenzie) is now living in his childhood bedroom and he barely knows his teenage sister Jodie (Avigail Tlalim). Mark is drawn back into the life he left behind. Hardest of all is meeting his first love Alice (Riley), now married with a child. Thrust into the complicated lives of his former neighbours, it’s not surprising there are awkward moments as Mark becomes reacquainted with his past, including his old friends ‘down the pub’ Lucy (Kelly Adams), Carly (Aisling Bea) and Jeff (Sam Troughton). Running parallel with Mark’s story, we get to know the town Mayor, alcohol-soaked Len (Clunes). With his world falling in around him, Len is stumbling from one PR disaster to another. As we get to know the community, we’re also introduced to the enigmatic Inspector Franks (Douglas Hodge) from the local police force whose links to the family are stronger than it first appears... Mark struggles to decide whether he should stay permanently to be with his family. But a new life is difficult to build in the place you used to call home and now feels like you barely know it.
