She is the author of Make a Way Somehow: African American Life in a Northern Community, published by Syracuse University Press in 1994 and winner of that year's John Ben Snow Prize as the best manuscript in New York State history and culture. This research paper is part of a larger work, The Fugitive's Gibraltar: Escaping Slaves and Abolitionism in New Bedford, Massachusetts, to be published by the University of Massachusetts Press in Fall 2000. You may recollect the circumstance that took place a few weeks since, the attempt to capture a slave, who escaped to this place in a vessel from Norfolk, Va., they came at that time very near capturing him. We have just now got information that his owner has offered a high reward for him and that they have actually formed all their plans to take him without any delay. We think it imprudent for him to be here after the boat arrives, and I could not think of any better plan than sending him to Fall River, if you can keep him out of sight for a short time. -

ABSTRACT In the mid-nineteenth century a compulsory education system was emerging that allowed all children to attend public schools in northern states. This dissertation investigates school attendance rates among African American children in New York State from 1850–1870 by examining household patterns and educational access for African American school-age children in three communities: Sandy Ground, Syracuse, and Watertown. These communities were selected because of their involvement in the Underground Railroad. I employed a combination of educational and social history methods, qualitative and quantitative. An analysis of federal census reports, state superintendent reports, city directories, area maps, and property records for the years 1820–1870 yielded comparative data on households, African American and European American, in which African American school-age children resided. The nature of schooling and the manner in which the household and community advocated for school attendance during this period are also described and compared. -

Behind the Mansions: The Political, Economic, and Social Life of a New Bedford Neighborhood Introduction: The Study Area and Scope This study examines the largely residential area lying immediately east of the mansions on County Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts, as it existed before the Civil War. Within the boundaries of this area—from Union Street on the north, Wing Street on the south, County Street on the west, and South Sixth Street on the east—lived wealthy white whaling and shoreside merchants as well as skilled craftspeople, shop owners, and a full range of service workers, laborers, and mariners of both Caucasian and African descent. In architectural terms the area includes Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, and some early Italianate homes ranging from high to vernacular styles. In these respects the area may be viewed as a cross-section of the city’s antebellum built environment and population. Whether the area may properly be termed a neighborhood—in the sense of being an urban subsection that people then perceived to have its own set of social connections and physical boundaries—is not possible to establish.1 Certainly Union Street, as New Bedford’s main commercial artery before the War, was a real and psychic boundary, and in this section County Street formed for all intents and purposes the western edge of the city up to the Civil War. Moreover, the area between County and South Sixth Streets was a distinctly different physical space than what existed to its east, roughly between Fifth (now Pleasant) Street and the Acushnet River waterfront. -

Stories From Discovering the Underground Railroad, Abolitionism, and African American Life in Seneca County, 1820-1880 Introduction The various stories I have compiled here are based upon the information found in the project report Discovering the Underground Railroad, Abolitionism, and African American Life in Seneca County, New York, 1820-1880 written by Dr. Judith Wellman of Historical New York Research Associates. This is the report of the research project funded in 2005-06 by a Preserve New York Grant from the Preservation League of New York State and the New York State Council on the Arts. The grant made it possible to do an in-depth sites survey of places in Seneca County that were part of the Underground Railroad and/or abolitionist activity and/or homes of African Americans. This report was completed through the Seneca County Historian’s Office. The purpose of these compiled stories is to help the reader grasp more fully the wonderful insights that can be gleaned from making use of the information found in this report. In my stories I have tried to take the information found in the project report about a particular place or a particular person and put it into a narrative format and add some discussion of the historical significance about this person or place. While each story can “stand alone,” when put together they help the reader to understand much of what was happening in Seneca County during these years. I sincerely thank Dr. Wellman for her wonderful wording that I have so extensively used and to which I have added some discussion of historical significance. -

She was fifteen years old. Charlotte was relocated to obtain an education worthy of the teenager’s socio-elite background. The 1850 Fugitive Slave Law had a tremendous impact on her family in the City of Brotherly Love. Even though they were well-known and affluent citizens and abolitionists, the law’s passage took a heavy toll on all people of color in the North including rising racial tensions, mob attacks, and the acute possibility of kidnap. Charlotte Forten: Coming of Age as a Radical Teenage Abolitionist is an intellectual biography that spans her teenage years from 1854-1856. Scholarship has maintained that Charlotte was sent to Salem solely as a result of few educational opportunities in Philadelphia. Reexamining the diary she kept as a teenager in Salem reveals that there was more to the story. Her family’s extensive ties to the Underground Railroad, anti-slavery endeavors, and lack of male guardianship for her in Philadelphia also factored in to the ii family’s decision to send her to Salem. -
