126th Bavarian Central Agricultural Festival (ZLF) September 17 to 25, southern part of Theresienwiese Under the motto “Agriculture Shapes Our Land” the Bavarian Farmers Association organizes a festival for the entire family. More than 650 exhibitors will present the latest developments for the country and its people. From 9am to 6pm daily visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the greatest agricultural show in Bavaria – all with a festive character. Extending over 120,000 m2 the event presents a variety of products and information about agriculture and forestry, food production and animal husbandry. In the “Great Ring” spectacular animal presentations attract visitors; high- tech fans can admire the latest machinery for agriculture and forestry. The Bavarian Animal Show featuring awards for the best breeding achievements by Bavarian farmers, the attractive show program and the multi-facetted presentations in the Great Ring will again be a magnetic draw for visitors. Noteworthy educational programs and special shows, contests, discussions about current issues and lotteries round out the program. The heart of the ZLF is “the marketplace” where Bavarian Page 4 farmers and direct marketers offer their seasonal products. Merry dancing can be enjoyed around a Franconian dance linden tree. This year the “Oide Wiesn” takes a break for reasons of space. However, the festival tent called “Tradition”, which is known from the historical folk festival, makes a guest appearance at the ZLF. Dressed in traditional costumes members of the folklore associations from Upper Bavaria set the mood with folk music and dancing, whip-crackers and slap-dancers. The festival tent with beer garden is open until 10.30pm during the ZLF. Following the end of the ZLF during the second week of Oktoberfest from September 26 to October 3 the village marketplace will be open for visitors from 10am to 9pm and the festival tent “Tradition” from 10am to 10.30pm. The first agricultural festival was held in 1811 as special exhibition to promote Bavarian agriculture during the Oktoberfest. The ZLF takes place in the southern part of Theresienwiese every four years during the time of the Oktoberfest. BIER.MACHT.MÜNCHEN (Munich – Powered by Beer) Special exhibition on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian Purity Law until January 8, 2017 at the Münchner Stadtmuseum at Sankt- Jakobs-Platz 1 Featuring a comprehensive collection of over 700 items the show seeks to recount the stories behind one of the city’s most important industries and review relevant issues. Munich – Powered by Beer explores the production and consumption of beer, especially from the mid-19th century to the present day.

Page 5 In no other major city does the culture of beer seem to be so closely woven into the fabric of its history. The title of the exhibition emphasizes three aspects: “Bier macht München” (Beer makes Munich) is a direct allusion to the way in which beer has shaped Munich’s urban development. Beer also enjoys strong bonds with the powers that run the city, leaving its stamp on everything from medieval brewing rights to today’s politicians who attend the opening of every new pub. Indeed, as industrialization took hold from the 1870s onwards, Munich itself blossomed into a global beer power. It is fitting that the potential for diversity still epitomized by the Purity Law has moved to the forefront of discussion on the occasion of its 500th an- niversary in Bavaria. The exhibition is generously supported by the Edith- Haberland-Wagner Foundation and the Association of Munich Breweries). At the same time the show “Beer is the Wine of this Land. Jewish Brewery Tales” is presented at the Jewish Museum Munich.

Permanent Exhibition Puppet Theater / Fairground Attractions at the Münchner Stadtmuseum at Sankt-Jakobs-Platz 1, 3rd floor Those whose interest goes beyond a visit to the Oktoberfest and is aimed at the history of folk festival attractions in general and the Oktoberfest in specific are recommended to stop by the small but exquisite permanent exhibition on the topic of “fairground attractions” at the Münchner Stadtmuseum. Since 1984 a formidable collection of puppetry exhibits and fairground attractions focusing on “popular entertainment” and “the Munich Oktoberfest” have been on display on the third floor. Other exhibits feature the original guillotine of the Wiesn variety show "Auf geht’s beim Schichtl" ("Raise the Curtain at Schichtl's") from the traditional

Page 6 Oktoberfest attraction "Beheading of a Live Person" and a mechanical slackrope-artist from just after World War II. Further attractions on display range from a fully equipped shooting gallery, merry-go-round vehicles and animals, a giant, mechanical King Kong from a funfair ride, replica heads used as targets in ball-toss stands to barrel organs and paintings from fairground booths. A "curiosity corner" brings together a Venus figure posing for artists, wax busts, and all manner of oddities traditionally used to amuse or startle fairground visitors. Another indispensable highlight for Munich fans is the world's oldest horse and carriage set from the merry- go-round at the former "Betz'sche Gastwirtschaft" in Haidhausen. BEER IS THE WINE OF THIS LAND. JEWISH BREWERY TALES Special exhibition on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian Purity Law until January 8, 2017 at the Jewish Museum Munich, St.- Jakobs-Platz 16 The Jewish Museum Munich is staging the first exhibition of its kind to ex- plore the story of beer, past and present, in Jewish tradition and culture. In ancient Egypt beer became a staple drink and it was there that the Israel- ites became acquainted with it. For them the question arose as to whether beer had to be kosher and if it could be used for ritual purposes like wine. Another section of the exhibition looks at what the “Brauerstern”—the brewers’ star—and its equivalent in the Upper Palatinate region, the “Zoigl,” have to do with the Star of David. The history of the hops trade, which in southern Germany was significantly influenced by Jewish mer-

Page 7 chants over a long period, is also clearly traced. Evidence is provided of how the decoration of beer steins, namely their painting as well as the manufacture and fitting of pewter lids, was likewise an industry primarily developed and operated by Jews in Munich. Important Jewish brewers were involved in Munich’s brewery industry. The show traces their profes- sional and personal paths in Munich as well as their forced emigration. The last section of the exhibition is devoted to the craft beer culture in present-day Israel. To mark the exhibition craft breweries from Germany and Israel – CREW Republic from Munich and Herzl Beer Workshop from Jerusalem – have for the first time created a “collaboration brew” which can be tasted at the café in the Jewish Museum Munich.
