SERIOUSLY PLAYFUL AND PLAYFULLY SERIOUS: THE HELPFULNESS OF HUMOROUS PARODY A Dissertation Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design by Michael Richard Lucas May 2014 Accepted by: Victor J. Vitanza, Committee Chair Stephaine Barczewski Cynthia Haynes Beth Lauritis i ABSTRACT In the following work I create and define the parameters for a specific form of humorous parody. I highlight specific problematic narrative figures that circulate the public sphere and reinforce our serious narrative expectations. However, I demonstrate how critical public pedagogies are able to disrupt these problematic narrative expectations. Humorous parodic narratives are especially equipped to help us in such situations when they work as a critical public/classroom pedagogy, a form of critical rhetoric, and a form of mass narrative therapy. These findings are supported by a rhetorical analysis of these parodic narratives, as I expand upon their ability to provide a practical model for how to create/analyze narratives both inside/outside of the classroom.

The Wonder Years Episode & Music Guide “What would you do if I sang out of tune … would you stand up and walk out on me?" 6 seasons, 115 episodes and hundreds of great songs – this is “The Wonder Years”. This Episode & Music Guide offers a comprehensive overview of all the episodes and all the songs played during the show. The episode guide is based on the first complete TWY episode guide which was originally posted in the newsgroup rec.arts.tv in 1993. It was compiled by Kirk Golding with contributions by Kit Kimes. It was in turn based on the first TWY episode guide ever put together by Jerry Boyajian and posted in the newsgroup rec.arts.tv in September 1991. Both are used with permission. The music guide is the work of many people. Shane Hill and Dawayne Melancon corrected and inserted several songs. Kyle Gittins revised the list; Matt Wilson and Arno Hautala provided several corrections. It is close to complete but there are still a few blank spots. Used with permission. Main Title & Score "With a little help from my friends" -- Joe Cocker (originally by Lennon/McCartney) Original score composed by Stewart Levin (episodes 1-6), W.G. Snuffy Walden (episodes 1-46 and 63-114), Joel McNelly (episodes 20,21) and J. Peter Robinson (episodes 47-62). • “Take a Look at Me Now”
im Auftrag: medienAgentur Stefan Michel T 040-5149 1467 F 040-5149 1465 [email protected] “TAKE A LOOK AT ME NOW” Große Retrospektive mit Re-Issues aller Soloalben ab 29.Januar 2016: Ab dem 29.

SongTown.com is a unique community of creative souls led by top-selling songwriters Marty Dodson and Clay Mills, offering online classes, webinar hangouts, and mentoring worldwide with top music professionals. We’d love to help you grow your art and chase your dreams! Marty Dodson Marty Dodson was born in Apple Valley, California, and moved around for several years until his family settled in Nashville, TN. Growing up, he was intimidated by the sheer number of people coming to Nashville to become singers or songwriters. So, he went to college and earned a degree in psychology. After working ten years as a youth minister, Marty decided to change careers. Trouble was, he didn’t know what he wanted to be when he grew up. He fumbled around for several years, doing odd jobs and trying to decide on a direction for his life. Finally, a book he read helped him realize that what he REALLY wanted to be was a songwriter. He had run into Gordon Payne, a member of the Crickets, while working one of his odd jobs. Gordon helped him re-write one of his songs and demo it in a Nashville studio. Marty was hooked. He threw caution to the wind, quit the other jobs and began writing full-time. Six #1 songs and more than 90 cuts later, Marty has become one of the top writers in Nashville. Clay Mills Clay Mills, a ten-time ASCAP award-winning songwriter and producer, grew up surrounded by music in the blues-rich Mississippi Delta.

  • “Both Sides, Now”: Voice, Affect, and Thirdness
65 3 “Both Sides, Now”: Voice, Aff ect, and Th irdness Joanne Winning In his endnotes to the novel An Equal Music , in which he records the musical experiences of his violinist protagonist Michael Holme in remarkable, exquisitely fi ne-grained detail, Vikram Seth writes: “Music to me is dearer even than speech. When I realized that I would be writing about it I was gripped with anxiety. Only slowly did I reconcile myself to the thought of it” (Seth 1999, n.p.). Despite his strong misgivings, Seth produces nuanced, captivatingly accurate descriptions of the experience of listening to and playing chamber music in the novel, proving, in fact, that it is possible to write about that seemingly most untouchable of mediums. Without doubt, the task of writing about music is fraught with certain challenges in trying to capture both its sonic and aff ective elements through written language, which is seemingly such a codifi ed system of meaning-making and so far removed from the music’s visceral, nonverbal terrain. Seth’s anxiety is in my mind as I turn to analyze one of Joni Mitchell’s most notable and treasured songs, “Both Sides, Now.” 1 What I want to address in this chapter is how this particular song presents a compelling example of the power of the human voice to trigger strong aff ective responses in listeners, so much so that it can become emblematic of their own histories and experiences. Th is song, perhaps uniquely in Mitchell’s canon because of its history, off ers a highly productive case for considering the ways in which the singing voice occupies the space between singer and listener, enfolding the subjectivities of both.
