ABOUT JEEP

Joint Energy and Environment Projects (JEEP) is an indigenous environmental

NGO founded in 1983 in Uganda.

Mission

To combat environmental destruction and to conserve natural resources

Vision

"Safe environment for a sure future"

JEEP Objectives

 Creating awareness on the causes and effects of poor environmental management in Uganda;

 Providing trainings, services and technologies that lessen the daily workload of farmers in communities;

 Informing community members about alternative, non-wood based sources of energy e.g. biogas, solar energy and use of agricultural residues;

 Working together with other NGOs through networking and advocacy activities in order to spearhead a better environment for human settlement;

JEEP ADVOCACY PROJECT

The KAL Advocacy project 2014 -2017 implemented by JEEP in partnership with NFRE and funded by CISU to address climate change issues in the nine which include; Mukono, Arua, Amuria, Apac, Kalangala, Kamuli, Kasese, Mpigi and

Tororo.

Objective of the KAL project

To create high public awareness and knowledge on benefits of renewable energy and

climate change mitigation at all levels of society. Advocacy project activities

1. Baseline survey 2. Mobilization of awareness seminars 3. Awareness seminars for;  District leaders  Sub county leaders  Community leaders  Head teachers  Health in charge

4. Trainings  Training of tree nursery attendants  Training of energy saving energy  Training of entrepreneurs in business skills

5. Establishment of tree nurseries beds 6. Radio talk show 7. Follow up 8. Evalutation

Follow ups on Leaders

 District, sub-county, and village leaders have become useful in policy formulation, enforcement .  Monitoring plans to reduce environmental degradation are in place

 Activities such as degraded wetland, tree planting have been restored in interactive decision making fora in their local and administrative council meetings.

 Leaders have sensitised community members about climate change and use of renewable technology.

 Three districts have organised world environment day celebrations. (Arua, Mukono and Mpigi districts).

Challenges

 Transfer of sensitised leaders in the middle of the project. JEEP had to educate new leaders causing delays in project impact

 Some political leaders not re elected making it difficult to follow up on commitments.

 Absenteeism of some leaders in their officers making it costly and difficult to follow up on commitments. ( at times we have to look for them in their homes)

 High cost of transport for JEEP in island district of Kalangala ( leaders scattered on different islands).

Success stories - Tree Nurseries

 Out of the 25 nurseries, 22 are able to sustain the nursery work.  In Kalangala district, Mr. Kagwa Charles raised 5000 seedlings and sold 2800 seedlings. He used the profits to top up and buy a pick up and establish a small shop

 Mr. Mbago from Kamuli district completed his house from the profits he got from the nursery. He raised 40,000 seedlings in two seasons and sold 30,000 seedlings.

 Mr Ondyek Walter from Apac bought a car and 2 cows from the profits he got from the Nursery.

Mr. Mbago`s Nursery in Kamuli Mr. Charles `s Nursery bed in Kalangala district

Challenges with Tree Nurseries.

 Districts don't have tree seed centers. This is costly because they have to travel to to buy quality seeds.

 Pesticides and potting tubes are also very difficult to access in their district. Therefore they get them from Kampala.

 Some nursery attendants are faced with the problem of intruders like animals and thieves. Eg In Apac district the nursery shade net was stolen.

Follow up on Business Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs have promoted renewable energy technologies and products at the local level as they work towards developing their stock of goods which include solar lamps, energy saving stoves, tree seedlings and water filters for sale, making it available for the households in the communities.

Challenges faced by entrepreneurs  Some of the entrepreneurs lack enough capital to sustain their business

 Many players in the market who are selling poor quality renewable products sabotaging the entrepreneurs market

 Lack of tax exemption on solar products resulted in high cost of the products. As the result some of the buyers couldnt buy the products

Success Stories on Energy Saving Stoves.

411 stove makers were trained. we used Open Data Kit tool (ODK) to identify the stoves location geo

points. 1,277 stoves were constructed by stove makers.

The ToTs trained 2492 community members

282 stoves were Sold .

Margert from Kasese district using Lorena stove Juma from using his Lorena stove

Geo point location of stoves in 9 districts

Challenges faced by the stove makers.

 In district like Amuria the drought affected people`s income; they did not buy the stove as anticipated

 The concept of paying for a stove was still new in all the districts so it is still being adopted

 Internal conflicts in Kasese district affected adaptation rate of stove construction and use

 In some sub counties in Kalangala district there don't have the clay used for making stoves, which made it difficult for the trainers to construct the stoves.

Lessons learnt and Benefits

 Working with leaders build faster results and acceptability for the success of the project.

 The project has improved JEEP advocacy capacity

 Start up capital for enterprenuers enhances the success of their business eg Tree nursery attandants

 The project has publicized JEEP´s work.

 Limited budgets for enviromental activities hinders effective law enforcment on enviroment degradation

 JEEP should educate the communities within their parish and not at sub counties to reduce on the cost of the distance travelled by the people

 In future Field offices need to be established for closer monitoring and follow up.
