Ock&ti Trinity University Since the end of Erancisco Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975), Spain has transformed itself from an isolated, fascist state dominated by the promotion of hispanidad and national Catholicism (Corkill 49) to a country that hosts nearly 5.7 million international residents (Deveny, Migration 4). Pedro Almodovar, who began his film career at the time of Spain's transition to democracy, has steadily responded to the country's changes through his examination of identity, sexuality, repression, and desire (Acevedo-Muñoz 1—2). The director has distinguished himself partly by his continuous use of international music in his films, in a way that corresponds to Spain's development into a more tolerant, liberal, multicultural state (Kinder, "Pleasure" 37). -

Introduction to Italian Cinema I. Italian Cinema from the 1940's to its Golden Period in the 1960's through the 1970's. Films will be viewed in their cultural, aesthetic and/or historical context. Readings and guiding questionnaires will help students develop appropriate viewing skills. Films will be shown in Italian with English subtitles. Graded: Graded Student. Units: 3.0 COURSE GOALS and METHODS: To develop a critical knowledge of Italian film history and film techniques and an aesthetic appreciation for cinema, attain more than a mere acquaintance or a broad understanding of specific artistic (cinematographic) forms, genres, and cultural sources, that is, to learn about Italian civilization (politics, art, theatre and customs) through cinema. Guiding questionnaires will also be distributed on a regular basis to help students achieve these goals. All questionnaires will be graded. Weekly discussions will help students appreciate connections between cinema and art and literary movements, between Italian cinema and American film, as well as to deal with questionnaires. You are required to view the films in the best possible conditions, i.e. on a large screen in class. Viewing may be enjoyable but is not meant to be exclusively entertaining. -

Abstract The 1960s was a period of change for the British cinema, as it was for so much else. The six feature films directed by John Schlesinger in that decade stand as an exemplar of what those changes were. They also demonstrate a fundamental change in the narrative form used by mainstream cinema. Through a close analysis of these films, A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd, Midnight Cowboy and Sunday Bloody Sunday, this thesis examines the changes as they took hold in mainstream cinema. In effect, the thesis establishes that the principal mode of narrative moved from one based on objective realism in the tradition of the documentary movement to one which took a subjective mode of narrative wherein the image on the screen, and the sounds attached, were not necessarily a record of the external world. The world of memory, the subjective world of the mind, became an integral part of the narrative. -

The children’s stories 19 Appendix A: The original research 27 References 29 5 6 Voice of a child Introduction Forcibly separating children from their primary carer, particularly their mother, can cause severe distress and leave permanent emotional scars (see Bowlby, 1951; Brown, 2001). The Howard League for Penal Reform estimates that more than 17,240 children under 18 years in England and Wales were forcibly separated from their mother in 2010. In the 1990s, the Howard League first brought the issue of prisoners’ children to public attention. The first version of this report (1992) aimed to give these forgotten children both a voice and a profile that would enable decision makers and opinion formers to understand more about these previously faceless children. This was the first time that the children themselves had been asked what they thought about having their mother in prison. Now nearly twenty years later, the Howard League is revisiting this research. Women’s imprisonment rates have remained at around 5 per cent of the overall prison population. A burgeoning number given that the current prison population is over 85,500. -

And The Ship Sails On by Serge Toubiana at the occasion of the end of his term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. Within just a few days, I shall come to the end of my term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. As of February 1st, 2016, Frédéric Bonnaud will take up the reins and assume full responsibility for this great institution. We shall have spent a great deal of time in each other's company over the past month, with a view to inducting Frédéric into the way the place works. He has been able to learn the range of our activities, meet the teams and discover all our on-going projects. This friendly transition from one director-general to the next is designed to allow Frédéric to function at full-steam from day one. The handover will have been, both in reality and in the perception, a peaceful moment in the life of the Cinémathèque, perhaps the first easy handover in its long and sometimes turbulent history. That's the way we want it - we being Costa-Gavras, chairman of our board, and the regulatory authority, represented by Fleur Pellerin, Minister of Culture and Communication, and Frédérique Bredin, Chairperson of the CNC, France's National Centre for Cinema and Animation. The peaceful nature of this handover offers further proof that the Cinémathèque has entered into a period of maturity and is now sufficiently grounded and self-confident to start out on the next chapter without trepidation. But let me step back in time. Since moving into the Frank Gehry building at 51 rue de Bercy, at the behest of the Ministry of Culture, the Cinémathèque française has undergone a profound transformation. -
