“Building a Future for Venango Area Business!” 4 A new era begins at Wanango Golf Club

Wanango Golf Club officially opened its doors as a “members only” facility in 1914. The storied private country club has seen its once blustering membership dwindle over the years. On April 24, 2009 the Wanango Golf Club replaced the historic country club and opened its doors for business, this time welcoming the public not just private members to enjoy on the premier gold course in all of .

Matt Hart and Todd McLaughlin are now operating the course. “We will maintain a certain amount golf memberships but we want everyone to know that Wanango is open to the public and we welcome them to enjoy one of the finest golf experiences in Pennsylvania. We will make them feel welcome to golf here.” said Hart. McLaughlin talked about undertaking such a huge challenge at a time when privately funded country clubs are a falling by the way side in large numbers. “I don’t know how long it will take for the perception of Wanango being a private country club to change, but that image is going to change. Yes, the social elite built this club, but if it is going to survive it is the blue collar community that will make it last. It’s a huge project to tackle especially in these economic times, but it has always been a dream of mine to run a facility like this and make it accessible to everyone, not just a select few. “

Wanango has long been a fixture in Venango County serving as a premier recreational and social club. “Our goal is to build on that legacy opening the former country club so everybody in the Venango County area can enjoy this historic community asset. We will continue to host the fund raising events like golf tournaments and gala affairs and parties in our ballroom. We will make the club more accessible by offering packages that offer tremendous value.”

[Continued from Page 4] said McLaughlin. Already the new owners have dramatically sliced the cost of golf memberships.

The charming Clubhouse with its huge fieldstone fireplace offers a comfortable, yet elegant setting. Both the informal porch and spacious Dining Room overlook the 18 th green of the golf course, making the clubhouse ideal for weddings, banquets and parties. Hart commented on plans for Wanango Golf Club “The golf course will be the primary focus for the immediate future, but we are forging ahead with plans that will maintain the tradition of fine dining and catered affairs that Wanango has been famous for over the years”. The first step is to transfer the Liquor License. Wanango’s new management team hopes to have that accomplished by June. Once the license is in place Joe McLaughlin, Todd’s brother will assume the duties of General Manager.

For now though McLaughlin and Hart are inviting the public to play golf on the historic Donald Ross designed golf course. During the month of May a special golf rate of $25 for 18 holes and a cart on weekdays, and $35 for 18 holes and a cart on weekends. “Our regular rates are very competitive with other public venues in northwest pa.” said McLaughlin. Tee times are strongly encouraged. To book a tee time golfers can call 814-677-5130.

The course is located in Reno, Pa about halfway between Franklin and Oil City. A sign at the intersection of Fifth Street and Route 8 & 62 directs the public up the hill to Wanango Golf Club.

Changes in store for 2009 Oil Heritage Festival The Chamber will charge a nominal admission fee to evening concerts in the park

Plans are well underway at the Venango Area Chamber of Commerce for the 31 st annual Oil Heritage Festival. A festival of this size requires year around planning. A few changes are in store for this year. Community volunteers are at the heart of the festival and this year they will be adding new events and helping the chamber in trying to improve on many of the activities that have been regulars. One significant addition to this years’ festival will be the introduction of an entrance fee for the evening concerts in Justus Park. The fee will be a nominal $1.00 with children 12 and under free with an adult. Community volunteers will assist in greeting visitors as they enter the park, while collecting the entrance fee and stamping patrons hands. Joe Carrico will serve as the coordinator for the entrance gate area. He explains “This will allow us to have better control of the entrances to the park, creating an inviting welcome. It also provides modest revenue to the Chamber, who intends to commit all proceeds to programming for the next years’ Festival Entertainment.” Over the years the Oil Heritage Festival has kept fees for vendors very low and tried to include as many events free to the public as possible. Despite many loyal festival sponsors, support revenue is substantially lower than in years past, with expenses continuing to rise. Chamber Director, Susan Williams comments that community support for the new gate fee has been positive. Many festivals that offer free concerts charge parking fees from $3-$10. Parking throughout Oil City is free during most all festival activities. This year will include all the favorites from years past like the Arts and Crafts Show, Parade and Car Show, as well as the many children's activities. Community members interested in volunteering during the festival can contact the Venango Area Chamber of Commerce at 814-676-8521. As Festival nears, event details will be added to the chamber's website at www.venangochamber.org.

Third generation business reaches milestone R.N. Goss Gas Products celebrates 75th anniversary

R.N. Goss Gas Products celebrated 75 years in business with a customer appreciation event held at their location along Route 8 in Reno on May 8th. The company welcomed visitors from across the region and beyond.

Some of the best industry manufacturers and vendors were also on-site giving welding technology and product demonstrations. An oxy-fuel torch cutting contest took place for experienced welders to compete for the fastest time to cut through a large piece of steel.

Established in 1934, the company is an industrial gases and welding supplier with a retail store that distributes a full range of welding products and accessories. Goss Gas’s original delivery truck Industrial gases are used for many applications including welding and fabrication, food processing, plastics manufacturing, and the healthcare industry.

R. Norman Goss started the company at the height of the Great Depression on Seventh Street in Oil City. In the late 1950’s N. Grant Goss took over the business with his brother until the early 1970’s. Goss Gas moved to its current location along Route 8 in Reno in 1960.

Goss Gas was the basis for the formation of two additional companies. Our size and ability to really focus on our customers’ needs allow us to service the rural market more effectively than larger distributors.”

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research there have been 14 recessions during the time that Goss Gas has been in business. “The first was at the time the business was founded and today, in our 75 th year, we’re in the middle of another one,” says Goss, “and we’ll probably still be here for a few more.” Goss Gas employees outside their retail store. “Building a Future for Venango Area Business!” 1010 Venango Regional Chosen as Business of the Year

Airport comes out on top as among the best area businesses

The Venango Area Chamber of Commerce has selected the Venango Regional Airport as the 2008 Business of the Year. This annual honor is awarded to a local business that meets several criteria in recent years, including the ability to overcome adversity, marketing achievements, expansion or quality improvements and commitment to the community. Established in 1946, and operated by the County of Venango since 1959, the airport provides as part of a Federal program offering daily air service through Continental Connection from Venango Regional Airport to the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport -- connecting to over 60 destinations world-wide. The airport was named Commercial Service Airport of the Year for 2006 in the FAA’s Eastern Region. Chamber director Susan Williams notes “Air travel continues to be an important attraction to businesses. The Venango Regional Airport and its staff have remained committed to delivering the best possible service even through challenging circumstances.” Overcoming Adversity The airport lost air service through US Airways in early 2008 and awarded Gulfstream International a bid to replace the air service later that same year. Air service was available again beginning September of last year. Airport manager Otho Bell says, “It was a long and difficult process to restore the air service. A lot of community leaders helped with the process and supported our efforts. I think it’s still surprising to people that we have people –and businesses too-who rely on our airport to provide that service to them.” The launch of the new air service was difficult due to many obstacles. “September is typically one of the worst months for air travel. We also had one of the worst winters in recent years. And-we have to change the habits of air travelers all over again. Many have just begun to get comfortable with alternative air services while we were without one.” Marketing and Outreach Currently the airport is engaged in a marketing and outreach campaign that specifically identifies and targets both the business and leisure traveler. “Just as we want to educate businesses and people regarding the new air service, we’re learning from them…what they need, what they expect, how we can compete with other .” Expansion and Renovation The airport is embarking on a $1.3 million project this spring to rehabilitate the General Aviation 12-30 and improve the safety areas conforming to current FAA criteria. “The project will include complete repaving of taxiways and the terminal aircraft parking apron as well as complete re-painting of the pavement markings.” Commitment to Community The airport has 39 private aircraft hangars as well as nine hangars occupied by the PA State Police, Channelock Corp., Conair (IPEG), The Civil Air Patrol, EAA chapter 988, PennAire Aviation, Tom’s Aircraft Service, KB Aviation Flight School, and Franklin Aircraft Sales. The airport is also home to Primo Barones restaurant, Continental Airlines, and The Transportation Security Administra- tion (TSA) Franklin section). Seventy people are employed for the various entities doing business at the airport.

The airport does what ever it can to spend dollars locally. “On several occasions we’ve had the opportunity to request that other local businesses be included in certain projects when outside service providers were needed. If the service provider needs certain equipment we make sure they use a local business to supply it when possible.” Citing the hard work and efforts of many airport staff Bell concludes, “The Airport owes its success to its customers and employees past and present, and this would not have been possible without the vision and years of effort by the previous manager, Mr. Alan Penksa. We work hard each day to build upon the foundations established over the years while trying to keep current with today’s aviation environment.”
