WEATHER REPORT The traditional White Christmas arrived in November this year as the region suffered from unseasonal Arctic conditions which brought most sporting activities to a standstill – including all rugby matches. The two Tynedale 1st XV league fixtures affected have been reorganised as follows:- Fixture Original Date New Date Cinderford v Tynedale 27 November 2010. 5 February 2011.

Tynedale v Cambridge 4 December 2010. 26 February 2011.

SPONSORS We are delighted that DAISY COMMUNICATIONS LTD., who acquired the businesses of BNS Telecom Group PLC with effect from 19th February 2010, have agreed to continue to be the main sponsor of Tynedale Rugby Football Club. Daisy is a leading provider of integrated voice and data services to customers in the small-medium business market, providing products including access, voice, managed services and mobile telephony. We are grateful for their continued support in what we feel has been a successful partnership. This season we have also received new sponsorship from the BLUEFIN GROUP, who are underwriting the costs of this season’s match programmes. Bluefin are insurance brokers, providing corporate, commercial, home and motor insurance advice. We are also being sponsored, for the first time, by CAPALEX, from Cleator Moor, Cumbria. Capital Aluminium Extrusion Limited supply on-site services including extrusion, powder coating, machining and assembly for a wide range of industries. We are grateful to Peter and Janice Beasley of Capalex and to Mike Fieldhouse of Bluefin for making these two new sponsorship deals a reality. We continue to be supported by other established sponsors, who have been loyal for many years, such as TROYNORTH LTD., NORTHERN COUNTIES INSURANCE, C.I. ACCOUNTANCY LTD., and the JOHN LEWIS/WAITROSE GROUP along with many others whose advertising boards are visible around the ground. In these financially challenging times, when rugby clubs are also faced with the drastic reductions in funding from the , the lifeblood of rugby clubs remains their members and generous sponsors. Many thanks to all who have given us such continued and unstinting support.

NEW APPOINTMENTS The club is delighted to announce the appointment of STEPHEN HULL as Sales & Marketing Officer for Tynedale RFC. Reporting to the Management Committee, Steve will take responsibility for the development of the key commercial revenue streams of the club (advertising, sponsorship, major events and clubhouse events) as well as the overall marketing and communications activities. Steve lives in Acomb, and is married with two children. He enjoyed a successful career with businesses like Northumbrian Water and United Utilities where he held senior commercial positions. We look forward to Steve using his knowledge and expertise to drive the club’s commercial activities.

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS AT THE CLUB 1) We have set up a Special Funding sub-committee at Tynedale under the chairmanship of Tony Coates to look at two main topics – firstly the funding of anticipated losses in the next two seasons resulting from the RFU’s withdrawal of much of the funding of National League Rugby, and secondly to investigate the steps which are needed to try to secure the long-term financial future of Tynedale RFC. We are trying to avoid the financial problems suffered by many other rugby union clubs, resulting in the demise of clubs like Mounts Bay and the difficulties encountered by Manchester, London Welsh, Birmingham & Solihull, etc. 2) The club has applied for planning permission to replace the redundant scout hut on the Stanners Lane, north west, corner of Tynedale Park, with a two-storey family dwelling. Local residents have been canvassed for their opinions and were invited to attend a display and consultation evening which was held at the club on Thursday evening, 16th September. A pre- application enquiry has been raised with the planning authority. The proposals are on display in the clubhouse and are available for inspection and comments. 3) We have established a club within Tynedale RFC with its own affairs and regulations. The club will be called ‘CORBRIDGE CENTURIONS’. No separate fixture and membership card has yet been produced, so the fixtures of the Centurions for season 2010/11 have been displayed in the Tynedale RFC Fixture & Membership card. 4) Peter Southern has been appointed Club Captain – a change of the role previously held by Phil Belgian. Peter will coordinate playing matters and provide a link between the playing side and the management.

COMMUNITY RUGBY COACH (CRC) SCHEME Peter Telfer was first employed as CRC for the District in March 2005. Until 31st March 2009 the post was funded by Tynedale RFC, Tynedale RFC Junior Section and Northumberland Sport, and administered by Leisure Tynedale’s Sports Development team (now North Country Leisure). To maintain the post, Northumberland Sport’s contribution from Sport was then channelled through the RFU, with additional support from the Tynedale Schools Sports Partnership and Sports Unlimited. Peter decided to resign from the post, after five years, to concentrate on his farming work. We are grateful for Peter’s dedicated and excellent service to rugby in the area. He will continue to help Tynedale through his coaching of Colts teams. We are pleased to announce the appointment of GRANT BEASLEY, one of the stars of our successful first team, as Peter’s replacement. Grant is contracted for 15 hours per week for 35 weeks per annum. He delivers Start Tag, Rugby Ready and CLSO bolt-on courses, and targets children in school years 8 and over, making pupils aware of school/club links.

VALETE (1) ANDREW DEACON. We have to report that Andrew Deacon and his wife Caroline have left the area to live in Dorset. Andrew has been our esteemed President for the past four years. He has been an excellent ambassador for the club, a prodigious worker whether pursuing the club’s interests on the Northumberland Rugby Union Committee, attending social functions or representing Tynedale on the Beer Festival organising committee.

6.

Andy worked for many years with the Junior sections of the club; he was Chairman of the Mini- junior section before getting heavily involved on senior club committees, and at various times has been Chief Executive, Volunteer Coordinator and District Coaching Coordinator. To all of these duties he brought his own particular light touch which made him such a popular and respected figure within the club. However, his greatest contribution has been the financial benefits he brought to the club as the architect and driving force behind the Tynedale Beer Festival. We shall be forever grateful for the huge contribution these efforts made towards the health and development of rugby at Tynedale Park. (2) BEN MARSHALL We are sorry that Ben Marshall, our outstanding lock forward, has left the UK to work in Australia. Ben came to us in 2005 as a 19-year-old student at Newcastle University and has been very much the backbone of the Tynedale team since then. Ben arrived as a 6’6” 17-stone 2nd row player having played for Selby and Tykes. He had represented Yorkshire at U15-U23 levels, and played for the North U18’s and England U18’s. A dominant line-out jumper and immensely strong scrummager, Ben’s power in the loose and his intelligent committed attitude will be sorely missed. Ben studied for a MEng Civil and Structural Engineering degree at Newcastle University, graduating in 2009 with first class honours. Ben was an exceptional student during his time in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, excelling in design and structural analysis. During his studies, Ben completed a summer placement with international engineering consultants Parsons Brinckerhoff and subsequently joined them as a graduate engineer. He has now secured a job offer with Sinclair Knight Merz.. We wish him well in his chosen career, and look forward to seeing him back at Tynedale whenever he visits this country.

PRE-MATCH LUNCHES 3-course lunches are available before home 1st XV matches. The costs which include entrance to the match (currently £10) are:-  Season-ticket holders £15  Non season-ticket holders 25  Corporate 35 + VAT To make a booking contact either Tim Tatman – [email protected] or Mike Coulson on 01434 633058.

SONS AND FATHERS Of the current squad listed under ‘Player Sponsorship’ earlier in this document, 12 are the sons of ex- Tynedale players. Those players are:- Jonathan Cousin, Graeme Dunn, Matthew Fieldhouse, Richard Gledson, Jack Harrison, Jamie Harrison, Dan Herdman, Stuart Johnson, Barney Maddison, Andrew Murray, Jamie Murray and Grant Rastall. Five of the fathers are heavily involved on committees or coaching at Tynedale; the others are regular supporters. I wonder how many clubs playing at our National One level can boast such a record?

TYNEDALE MAN OF THE MATCH AWARDS John Lewis/Waitrose are kindly sponsoring a ‘Man of the Match’ award again this season. CONGRATULATIONS TO:- (1) RICHARD APPLEBY who has become the 7th RFU President from Northumberland. Richard was elected to the RFU Council to represent Northumberland in 1992. Richard played full back for Northern and Northumberland in the 1960’s and later refereed. He was Secretary of Northumberland and President before becoming the county’s RFU representative. Richard has always been a great friend of Tynedale’s, and we are delighted that his dedication to rugby at Northern and in Northumberland has been recognised in his appointment. We wish him well in his new role, and are sure that he will carry out his duties in his usual efficient and good-humoured manner. (2) DOUGLAS JUPP Douglas married Nicola on Sunday 3rd October. The ceremony took place at Langley Castle (3) THREE TYNEDALE STARS. Three home-bred players from Tynedale RFC – Charlie Maddison, Alex Fieldhouse and Barney Maddison – featured in the annual varsity match, playing for Leeds Metropolitan against Leeds University. All close friends (or even brothers) the three are products of the Tynedale Mini/Junior and Colts system and QEHS. All made major contributions to an exciting game played in a great atmosphere. The game was played in front of a crowd of over 10,400 under floodlights at the famous stadium. The match was the culmination and ‘Grand Final’ of over 50 different sporting matches played between the two Universities. Met captain, Barney Maddison, picked up the trophy from the Leeds Carnegie coach Andy Key with World Cup winner on hand to present the man of the match award. (4) MATTHEW JACKSON from Allendale, who plays for the club’s Under 12’s team was chosen to be a mascot at the Barbarians v South Africa match at Twickenham. (5) SEVEN TYNEDALE U18 PLAYERS who recently represented Northumberland v Cumbria at Keswick when the Northumberland U18 team won 29-19. The seven players were Joe Northwood (Hooker), Graham Robinson (No. 8), David Watchorn (flanker), David Batey (No.6 flanker), Chris Harvey (Lock), Sam White (Prop), and Matthew Williams (Scrum- half). (6) CATHERINE COTTERILL, until recently the club’s physiotherapist, who gave birth to a daughter, Charlotte, on the 7th. July 2010. A sister for Johnny. All doing well.

OBITUARIES JOYCE ANN HARRIS We are sorry to have to report the death of JOYCE HARRIS on 17th September 2010 aged 78 years. Joyce and her husband Grenville were staunch supporters of the club, and Joyce served for many years on the Ladies’ Committee. Joyce and Grenville were heavily involved with the junior section of the club, as their three sons, Michael, Ranald, and Ian progressed from mini-players into the club’s senior fifteen. A service to celebrate Joyce’s life was held at St. Andrew’s Church, Corbridge, on 28th September. JOHNNY JOHNSON We also regret having to report the death of JOHNNY JOHNSON aged 65 years, from a heart attack in the USA. Johnny played as prop for Tynedale from 1963 until 1971. Until 1970 he was a regular in the 1st XV and in his last two seasons he alternated between the 1st XV and 2nd XV’s, always bringing a sense of energetic good humour to his performances. His final match was for the Tynedale first fifteen against Gosforth (away) on 18th September 1971. It was about that time that Johnny received an Award for Bravery after he dived, fully clothed, into the Tyne at Newcastle Quayside to attempt to rescue a man who had fallen into the river. He dragged the unconscious victim from the middle of the river to the edge, where the ambulance cress tried to revive the man before all parties were swept off to the hospital. Poisoning from pollution was then as much a danger as drowning on that part of the river Tyne. His many friends at Tynedale will be saddened to hear of Johnny’s death. Many of those friends were teammates in that team of 1971 and a number are still active at the club! (The team was Chris Davy, David Carr, Willie Rutherford, Peter Dixon, Mike McGloughlin, Alan Stokoe, Peter Thorburn, Paul Davison, Rob Cunningham, Johnny Johnson, Geoff Fox, Douglas Hamilton, Roger Dinning, Jimmy Bell and Wallace Cousin). Only Peter Dixon and Rob Cunnigham have not been to Tynedale Park recently as they moved away from the area.

CHARITY HELP Events held at Tynedale Park raise substantial amounts of money for local and national charities. The Super Car Show, the Beer Festival and the MG Northumbria Car Show donate their profits to charitable causes. Apart from providing the facilities which enable the organisers of those events to support Charities, Tynedale RFC has also offered their facilities to two local charities this season. Tynedale Hospice at Home made a collection on Saturday 2nd October 2010 when Tynedale played Blackheath at home and they have been offered use of the clubhouse, free of charge, for a fund-raising event of their choosing in January or February. The Charlotte Straker Hospital, Corbridge, is to make a collection on Saturday 18th December 2010 when the club play Blaydon and they are to use the clubhouse for a Charlotte Straker project event. Charities suffer along with other organisations in these straitened times, so we hope spectators at the two home matches will give generously to these worthy local causes.

MG NORTHUMBRIA CAR SHOW In the first two years after the Show moved to Tynedale Park, the MG Show raised £7,678 for the new Sensory Garden at Hexham Priory School, and the balance required was provided by Wooden Spoon. The last show netter £5,017 which went to four local charities: Charlotte Straker Home, Chin-up – a respite home for children, The Tynedale Talking Newspaper and Minerva, a centre which provides training and opportunities for people with disabilities. Some money is still being held for a small under-5’s school near Haltwhistle who are in the final stages of sorting out their funding for this year. They will receive £350.

UNDER 8’S TOUR Andrew Burns and John Fletcher took an U8’s squad to London on 20th November 2010 to watch the England v Samoa match before playing against Windsor and Bracknell on the Sunday morning.

RUGBY COORDINATING REPORT- 2009/10

Unfortunately, some hopes for season 2009/10 did not come to fruition. It had been hoped to run an U21 XV to play in the NE University U21 Saturday League. Dan Maddison and Steve Turnbull volunteered (some say they were badgered into it) to take on the coaching/organising of the side. However, in spite of their best efforts, the team only played 2 games, one against a Durham University college and the other against a Newcastle University college. The team then folded through lack of numbers. The club had fewer U21 players than first thought, who were not already playing for the two senior sides. The International Schools Tournament had to be cancelled due to lack of sponsorship and school entrants. It is hoped that the competition will be held again in 2011. The Panthers (girls) section also had problems due to the lack of numbers. This meant that neither age group U15 or U18 could put out full teams. However, they made up the bulk of the combined (Tynedale, Rockcliff and Ponteland) XVs which played during the season. The girls also lost their coach, Fergus Oliver. Jerry Mattinson has taken over and with the help of James Johnson and Peter Telfer the future looks brighter. Northumberland County organised a 10s tournament for U20 players, who were going to university/college to encourage them to return to their clubs at holiday times, i.e. September, January and April. The first was held at Morpeth in September 2009, which Tynedale won, winning all their games by large margins and without conceding a point. The January 2010 tournament at Blyth was lost due to the frost. Tynedale’s notification to the last tournament held at Gosforth went missing, and in our absence Morpeth won and were declared overall winners of the tournament!!! The Colts were in the rebuilding stage of the Colts ‘Cycle’ with a young inexperienced team. They lost 9 games before Christmas, but with steady improvement, finished the season by winning their last 7 games. This included retaining the County Colts Cup by defeating Alnwick in the final played at Border Park. The Borders 7s Circuit did not yield a tournament win but the Colts7 was always competitive. Finally I must congratulate John Clark on his Presidency of the Border Semi-Junior League 2009/2010, an honour not given lightly, especially to an Englishman.

PETER C. ROBERTSON Chairman.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT 2009/10

Senior club membership numbers fell by 19 last season compared with the 2008/09 season, but overall numbers increased by 14, when Youth Parent members are included. Some of the members we had recruited last season did not renew their membership for the season past. However, a further four members showed their commitment to the club by deciding to convert their Social Membership to Full Membership. I would urge other Social Members to do the same. COMMERCIAL REPORT 2009/10

The past season was commercially challenging due to the continued reduction in RFU funding, coupled with the recession and subsequent impact upon company marketing and sponsorship budgets. Despite those factors the commercial team have managed to increase the contribution to club income. As always the team relies on the time and effort of a number of volunteers whose contribution has once again been invaluable and on behalf of the members I would like to thank everyone involved. Corporate advertising and sponsorship Season 2006/07 £12,000 Season 2007/08 £15,000 Season 2008/09 £22,000 Season 2009/10 £37,000 This was the first season that we were supported by the new club main sponsor, BNS PLC. I am delighted to report that the partnership has worked out extremely well for both parties and that as a result the agreement will continue for at least another two seasons. BNS PLC was acquired by Daisy PLC in the Spring and therefore the sponsor branding on the team shirts, post protectors and apparel were changed to reflect the new business for the new season. In addition to BNS/Daisy, thanks should also go to a number of other key sponsors – Troynorth, C.I. Accountancy, Waitrose/John Lewis, Tynedale Beer Festival and Northumberland Agricultural Society. The team is headed by Scrap Douglas (0781 491236) who would be pleased to hear from anyone who can introduce new sponsors or advertisers. Events and Special Efforts Season 2006/07 £35,400 Season 2007/08 £35,000 Season 2008/09 £51,500 Season 2009/10 £69,000 Events and special efforts continue to be a significant source of income, and last season saw a 30% increase largely due to additional contributions from the ever popular Beer Festival and a number of new events, such as the Wine Festival. Despite a busy events calendar for 2010/11, we are still aiming to add additional large-scale events, especially in the summer period, and so far we have bookings for a number of large caravan rallies, the second Great Touch Rugby Festival and the return of the International Schools Competition. Membership A detailed membership report is also included, but the income figures for the last four seasons are:- Season 2006/07 £ 9,000 Season 2007/08 £ 9,500 Season 2008/09 £11,000 Season 2009/10 £11,200 We aim to increase membership numbers through a variety of initiatives in the coming year. Match day attendance gate receipts and programme profit Season 2006/07 £15,000 Season 2007/08 £10,400 Season 2008/09 £28,200 Season 2009/10 £27,500 Despite the economic climate we managed to maintain our gate receipts close to the record level of the previous season. With additional activity and initiatives by the marketing and communications team, in addition to an increase in admission charges, we would hope to improve on this figure in the coming season. Marketing and Communications We were again fortunate to be supported by a number of volunteers (David and Mary Moore, and Steve Braysher) who produced and displayed posters promoting matches at locations along the Tyne Valley. This season coming we have decided to expand the distribution list to include schools and businesses so that the message will reach an even wider audience and attract new spectators.

New Developments We are delighted to have appointed a dedicated Sales & Marketing Officer. Stephen Hull, who lives in Acomb, enjoyed a successful career with businesses such as Northumbrian Water and United Utilities, where he held senior commercial positions, and we look forward to Stephen using his knowledge and experience to drive the club’s commercial activities. As many regular visitors to the site will have seen we are also working towards a new website which will provide members and visitors with all the latest news, and in addition provide new and existing sponsors with a fantastic advertising platform to promote their business.

CORBRIDGE UNITED JUNIOR F.C.REPORT 2009/10

The preparations for the 2010.2011 season are over and once again the 250+ youngsters from Corbridge don the blue and white to start their new season. The new season is eagerly anticipated by coaches, supporters and players alike, as across the age ranges from Under 7 to Under 17, there has been a remarkable increase in the standard and successes the teams are enjoying. It is all a far cry now from the position several years ago, where visiting teams thought they turned up to Corbridge and take home the three points, with now almost every team competing at the top end of their respective divisions for honours. The 2009/10 season was another exciting season to be involved at the Football Club with another nine coaches receiving their Level 1 coaching accreditation and then in May over 400 youngsters came to the third annual NFA Festival, which was deemed by the visitors to Tynedale Park as the most successful to date. The Football Club are once again indebted to the work done by the Rugby Club in preparing some of the best playing surfaces in the junior football leagues and to our hosts at the Rugby Club for making us and the visiting teams so welcome.
