In the Spotlight: Touch Tank Tuesdays

When Kennebunk Toy Company’s Kelly Ratoff started thinking about ways to engage her young toy-seeking patrons, this Chicago native thought – what would make a great Maine experience? Catering to York County’s youth for more than 22 years, Ratoff wanted to offer Vacationland- ers something different. So, she started doing her homework. In Biddeford, she found Marine Ecological Habitats, an international producer of commercial lobster tanks, custom-built aquari- ums, aquatic relief therapy tanks and educational marine touch tanks. Located “inland” in the middle of Main Street, Kennebunk, she thought: why not bring the ocean to the toy store? She did just that by purchasing a 100-gallon ocean tank. As luck would have it, she found an ideal partner, Carol Steingart, an experienced marine science educational professional and the owner of Coast Encounters, who offers local ocean excursions and tide pool outings for young and old alike.
