At first, the rations allocated to prisoners amounted to just under a kilo of grain per day, on which they could survive, especially when supplemented by food sent by their families. At the height of the famine, camp cadres enjoyed nearly double the rations of their charges, which left them hungry but alive. Dead Souls does not lend itself to truncated excerpts or sound bites. For teaching purposes, three of its contributors stand out: Zhao Tiemin (4:39), because of the broadly representative and dramatic flavor of his testimony; Li Jinghang (5:46), whose eschatological Christian worldview both stigma- tized and sustained him; and Zhu Zhaonan (7:20), a former camp cadre. Since the film assumes familiarity with the broader historical context of the period, it is best paired in the classroom with background material on the 1949 revolution, and more specifically on the Anti-Rightist Campaign, the Great Leap Forward, and its associated famine. An Analysis of the Disgust Aesthetics in Yang Xianhui’s Chronicles of Jiabiangou Serena De Marchi Department of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Turkish Studies Stockholm University Kräftriket 4B, 106 91, Stockholm, Sweden Email: [email protected] Abstract: Yang Xianhui’s Chronicles of Jiabiangou (2003) is a collection of stories detailing life and death during the Anti-Rightist Movement (1957-59) in the homonymous laogai camp located in the middle of the Gobi Desert, in the Chinese north-western province of Gansu. Based on the author’s extensive research, fieldwork and interviews with Jiabiangou survivors, in many instances the text dwells on particularly foul descriptions, mostly related to the harsh living conditions of prisoners undergoing reform, further exacerbated by the hostile geographical setting and by a famine that had struck the whole country. Physically and morally offensive descriptions of bodily expulsions and incorporations are portrayed with straightforward yet evocative accuracy, revealing very appalling aspects of the laogai experience. Building on psychological analyses and phenomenological interpretations of disgust, this paper interrogates some key passages in the text where the literary iconography is built through the use of this aesthetic technique, with a special attention to the representation of carceral bodies - often construed as the true repugnant objects. Through the analysis of this symbolic bodily iconography, this paper addresses the text’s contribution to the construction of alternative narratives of incarceration and political persecution that have the potential to challenge Chinese orthodox historiography. This article places the questions about the relationship between history and memory within the specific context of the People’s Republic of China, where the Party in power claims the right to a monopoly over the interpretation of the past, in order to show how a plural memory is being constructed today, and how a history which “works” with this memory is being written.
