3 3 Friends of Hayle SwimminG Pool Mayor's Organisation of the Year 2014. Friends of Hayle Swimming Pool work in partnership with Hayle Town Council. Our aim is to seek the continued operation and improvement of the pool, to promote awareness and use of the pool by the public and other groups and organisations. We are currently working with Hayle Town Council on an application for funding to get Hayle Swimming Pool covered, heated and accessible to people with disabilities. We would like to say thank you to those who have encouraged and supported us the most. In particular: * Mayor Graham Coad for our award. * All the Friends of the Pool Supporters for their help with Paint the Pool, fundraising, and for their enthusiasm at meetings and volunteer days. * Deputy Mayor Nick Farrar for laying the concrete base for the new Pool Spectators Shelter, which was purchased by Friends of the Pool using money raised from fundraising, combined with a Community Grant from Councillors John Coombe and John Pollard. * Jewson Hayle who donated the sand, cement and timber for this project, and Truro Portable Buildings provided a substantial discount on the building. * Hayle in Bloom for tending the pool garden, supplying new feature pots and for generally keeping things looking wonderful, not only at the pool but throughout the town. We wish them Good Luck with this year’s competition.

4 4 * The pool leaflet and group website (hayleswimmingpoolfriends.org.uk) was designed and donated by Paul Betowski and Tamsyn Swingler. Both have helped us to promote the pool in a positive way and attract new customers. * Hayle Model Boat Club regularly cut the grass at the pool, and contributed money to Friends of the Pool following fundraising at last year’s Hayle in Bloom Celebration Day. * Hayle Lions for paint and painting help. * Mr and Mrs Turk for donating the picnic benches in the swimming pool car park. Finally, thank you to Hayle Town Council, and the Council Office Staff for help and advice setting up our group, and continued support and encouragement.

We paint fences, gates, benches and cut the grass along the footpaths. There will be a fish survey from Carnsew Pool soon to monitor the effect of the development on the local environment and we will have a stall again this year at the Hayle in Bloom Celebration Day so come along and meet us there, it will be a great day. Letter to the Editor:

"I was delighted when I first learnt that we were to have an Asda supermarket in Hayle. But, boy, how I have changed my mind of late! It is a total eyesore blocking the lovely views down the Estuary to the sea and beaches, across to as well as the hilly skyline on the back road to St Ives. People can no longer see the sun set from ground level." Mary Cambridge

9 9 LAUDATE CHAMBER CHOIR Laudate Chamber Choir is one of four choirs in Hayle. This particular choir specialises in church and cathedral repertoire which it sings in services and concerts in Cornwall and beyond. Recent performances have been at Exeter Cathedral, Bath Abbey,. Truro Cathedral, St Ives Parish Church and St Mary's Penzance. Laudate rehearses on Tuesdays at 8pm in St Elwyn's Church, Hayle. The choir is part way through recording a CD and is preparing for its first foreign tour in October this year when it will be singing at St Anne D'Auray, St Gildas Abbey and Vannes Cathedral in southern Brittany. New members are always welcome, especially tenors. Football Club which we shared with our sister choir, Falmouth Vocalz, helping to raise funds for this year’s charity – Cornwall Hospice Care. The finishing touches were put to our first CD recording, “We Will Sing” which was released in February. In March, the choir competed at the County Music Festival in Truro, winning our class and qualifying for the County Championship which took place later in the evening. At the beginning of May, The Vocalz had our third four day trip to Brittany when sixty singers travelled to Quimper in France, sailing from Plymouth with Brittany Ferries,

10 10 performing a short spot in the showbar on the ship, the Pont Aven en route, much to the delight of the other passengers. This was followed by performances in the medieval town of Locronan and in Concarneau where we performed to an appreciative, packed out audience. A highlight of the weekend was an impromptu performance during a wedding at Tregunc Church near Concarneau which made the happy couple’s day! The weekend was very much a “cultural exchange” – we took our music and singing and returned with copious amounts of wine and other French goodies. We were well looked after by the Mayor of Locronan and members of a French local choir. The next few months will be busy with performances at Wall Music Festival, St Euny Church , Truro Methodist Church, Penzance Mazey Day, Falmouth Events Square, Holman Choir’s summer Garden Party, the Harbourside in St Ives and later in the year, the “Last Night” of the St Ives September Festival which we are sharing with the well known Military Wives Choir. Although we have over sixty singers, new members are never turned away, especially men. We are fortunate to have twenty men, including eleven tenors, so we are doing fairly well as a choir. If you are lively, enjoy having a bit of fun and singing some good music, come and join us at Passmore Edwards Institute, Mondays, 8pm to 9.30pm. Why not come along to a rehearsal and give us a try? See www.localvocalz.co.uk or call Neil Shepherd on 07950 585787 for further details. 13 13 transport costs were always a problem. Construction began in Sept 1939 and was speedily completed by July 1940 and under the most challenging conditions. The first scavenger left the plant in August 1940. The process chosen was the Ethyl-Dow “alkali” process, a US development first used in 1934. Cost and time constraints restricted plant and equipment to a minimum which meant that some desirable facilities were only available after 1948. The wartime plant had a design capacity of 2,500 tons per year but, as with most chemical plant, this was gradually exceeded. Even so, production was still inadequate during the early war years. It was inevitable that a relatively new company, operating under wartime conditions, should undergo change. ICI had no commercial interest in staying with the project post war and, as a result, on 1st Jan 1945 British Ethyl became wholly owned by Associated Ethyl with ICI agreeing to continue to operate the plant until 1st Jan 1948. Associated Ethyl also purchased the plant from the Air Ministry at the same time. Attempts were made during 1941-42 to increase capacity, but the Air Ministry refused to sanction further capital expenditure. Significantly, when Associated assumed full control and ownership, improvements were made. During 1948-9 sea water flows were increased by the installation of a booster pump house. A sulphur store was constructed on the Quay to serve the Contact Sulphuric Acid plant that was installed. The quality of the ethylene dibromide scavenger was improved when liquid ethylene, from Petrochemicals, Manchester replaced the in-house production of ethylene from ethyl alcohol.

14 14 These refinements and additional facilities made operations more efficient, but plant capacity remained an issue. In 1954 when the Company’s major expansion in Ellesmere Port and Anglesey were completed and commissioned, conversion of the Hayle plant began. In October, after producing 43,400 tons of bromine, the original “alkali” process was closed down to be replaced by the more elegant and efficient “acid” process, also developed by Dow. Over the next 18 months plant and equipment were installed to accommodate the new process and to double the production capacity to 5,000 tons per year. The “acid” process was licensed from Dow Chemicals and was a later development on the alkali process. Both the acid process and use of liquid ethylene were features of the Anglesey Bromine Plant established in 1953. In 1961 the Company name was changed to Associated Octel Co Ltd, to avoid confusion in the market place with Ethyl Corporation of the USA. The Anglesey plant, with lower power and transport costs, produced the scavenger at a much lower cost than Hayle. By the early 1960’s its capacity had increased to 15,000 tons per year. In order to improve the economics of Hayle, surplus bromine was

15 15 sold on the open market. Investment was Letter made in bulk and semi-bulk distribution equipment. Many years ago there was an idea mooted (I think by David Cambridge) that there could be a Sculpture Trail through Hayle. We already have four pieces, the 'Spirit of the Sea' wooden carving by Max Barrett on Penpol Terrace, the model of a Cornish Beam Engine by Terry English a short distance away, a lovely owl carved from a tree at the entrance to Ellis Park (I don't know who made this) and I think the sluice gates on the King George V Memorial Walk could also count as a sculpture. Council Corner June & July 2014 Election of the New Mayor and Deputy Mayor

During the Annual Council meeting on Thursday 8 May 2014 Councillor Graham Coad was successfully confirmed as Hayle Town Mayor and Councillor Nick Farrar as Hayle Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming year. Both are well known in the town and are keen to get involved with new and established initiatives. Congratulations to both!

Mayor’s Annual Awards One of the Mayor’s first duties was to select

24 24 the winners of the Annual Awards. Presentations to the recipients of the awards took place during the Annual Council meeting on Thursday 8 May 2014 at Hayle Day Care Centre. The female Citizen of the Year 2014 was awarded to Margaret Bray. She is a well- known and popular lady in the town. Margaret has worked as a lollipop lady for many years, knowing and known to many children in Hayle, a television celebrity too - having appeared on the Paul O'Grady show last year! She supports numerous organisations but was particularly nominated for her involvement with the local Scouts for over 25 years. Roger Smitheram was presented with the male Citizen of the Year 2014 shield. He is a familiar, cheerful face about the town having previously worked as a milkman and now as a postman. Roger was selected to be an Olympic Torch bearer in 2012, he has supported various charities over the years and run numerous marathons - British Heart Foundation 1991, Macmillan Cancer in 1993, Cornwall Hospice Care (St Julia's Hospice) 1995, 1997, 2000 and 2014. He is a founder member of Hayle Runners, Chairman of Hayle Scout Group and a Governor of Penpol School and more. Friends of Hayle Outdoor Swimming Pool received the Organisation of the Year Award 2014. The Mayor did not hesitate in this selection because the Friends formed and have stepped in to help support the pool in any way they can after funding was withdrawn. The entire group has worked hard maintaining and improving the pool and raising funds to keep this well-loved feature going. Hayle’s Youth Organisation of the Year 2014

25 25 Council is pleased to confirm that the Beach Access at Riviere Towans, Hayle is finally complete and was officially opened by Cornwall Council Leader, Councillor John Pollard (also a Hayle Town Councillor) and the then Hayle Town Mayor, Councillor Jayne Ninnes, on Wednesday 30 April 2014. The Town Council had held the long term belief that improved access to the local beaches was required for visitors and local residents alike. It was acknowledged that the elderly, persons with disabilities, and those is Hayle Youth Project. The Youth Project, led with young families in particular have by Jacqueline Hart and Heidi Row, provides historically struggled to access the three holistic, rapid education and care to support miles of soft, golden sands. The Council was local people at risk or hard to reach due to proactive in looking to address this and was being in a minority, social deprivation or successful in securing a Seaside Initiative exclusion for any reason, providing a vital Grant from Cornwall Development Company service to Hayle and the wider area. in conjunction with Visit Cornwall to the tune Beach Access of almost £67,000.00. Cornwall and Hayle After four years of planning, Hayle Town Town Council, together with Bourne Leisure,

26 26 also contributed significantly to this worthwhile scheme both in terms of financial contributions and officer support. Deciding upon the location for the beach access proved difficult and we are grateful to the local landowners, the La Touche Family/Riviere Estate and Bourne Leisure for permitting the access through and over their land. We have also had the support of Disability Cornwall and the local RNLI Branch to advise and assist with design and making sure that the route was as practical and as near to DDA compliant as possible given the terrain. The ongoing support from all of these agencies and more latterly our contractors, TMS Ltd, who managed to work throughout the terrible storms of earlier this year, have made sure that people who previously either could not get on to or struggled to get to the beach will now be able to access this beautiful, natural amenity more easily. The Council is really pleased with the early feedback this project has received, from a variety of different sources, and we are now looking at sourcing some sand chairs for disabled users to make the most of the beach experience. If anyone wants to sponsor such a chair please do not hesitate to contact the Clerk’s team.

Hayle Open Air Swimming Pool The Swimming Pool is due to open again on Saturday 21 June 2014 and will be open daily from 11am to 6pm, weather permitting, until Sunday 7 September 2014. We can confirm that entrance prices have not been increased for the third year in a row and once again season tickets will be available to purchase. In fact, we are promoting a pre- payment arrangement to allow regular users to pay for season tickets in instalments, prior to the opening. Contact the Clerk’s office for details.

27 27 We are also pleased to be able to confirm one off bookings. Remember that the CAB, that the Town Council has agreed to continue Link into Learning and others hold regular with the free entry to the pool on Tuesdays sessions and surgeries. There is also for all residents of Hayle and/or the TR27 currently a unit available on a long lease postal code area. This scheme proved to be suitable as office and/or meeting space, very popular last year and the idea is to give ideally for local, community based something back to all who contribute to it. organisations. Millpond Update

Under New Management. Following repeated requests for help to remove the rubbish from the Inner pond the ‘Cornishman’ published an article about our continuing problem. This prompted a group of volunteers to offer their help to take away the unsightly mess and I wish to express our sincere thanks to Pat Humphries. Robin Phillips, Rod Baker and his boat for their sterling efforts. In future we will try and look after ourselves and do what is needed to manage the ponds to keep them clean and in good health. Under rules of Health and Safety, unsafe bridging material will be removed . Any bridges should go over the river not through it please! As the season progresses around the site, the early flowers have now given way to daffodils, bluebells, three-cornered leek and willow catkins. Butterflies have started to reappear, especially the Holly Blues and Speckled Woods. The moorhens have produced two broods of chicks and we have two healthy ducklings. We think that we may have two more ducks sitting, so watch this space! Piran, the new baby turtle has joined our growing family and he is one of the smallest babies we have seen, but he is doing alright so far. Some of our ‘shelly’ friends have taken up residence on the ‘Old Orchard Pool.’ This now disused irrigation reservoir at the back of the river has become a tranquil

30 30 nature haven for the local wildlife, including our hybrid geese, Aviv and Angel, which produced three goslings there last year. Freya is sitting on four eggs and we hope that they will hatch this year. Odin has been very protective and driven our remaining residents mad chasing them away from her nest. As yet she has not hatched out so it is another case of ‘watch this space’ and we will bring you the good news in the next edition. We wouldn’t be able to do this without garden on the walk with our great Hayle in the help of all our volunteers, donors, and

If you can’t donate time, you can still help us. We always welcome donations of plants, seeds, etc. We could really do with a donation of top soil at the moment to help fill our beautiful boat on North Quay, by the swimming pool. All donations are gratefully received. Anne-Marie Rance. Chairman of Hayle in Bloom.

Would you like to take control of your electricity bills and raise money for the community? Residents in Trelissick and Tremorva areas of Hayle can get involved in Less is More, an innovative project aimed at saving electricity and reducing peak demand, while gaining rewards for the community. For every kilowatt hour householders are able to shave off their usage, a donation of cash is pledged to the two community funds. Each fund has now surpassed the £1,400 mark, with overall targets of £5,000 for each area in sight. The Western Power Distribution project is being delivered in Hayle by local charity and social enterprise Community Energy Plus. Project Leader Neil Farrington explained how it works: “The aim is to help small areas reduce their electricity usage in order to relieve pressure on their local substation.
