FIRST SEAL The Initial Revelation No one can feel the spinning Earth or hold the ocean’s life, No one can know the creator God without Her selfless strife; No rock or stone or tree or cloud can exist without Her grace, For She’s the one who made it all, the features of Her face. 1 The Vision of the Triple Goddess No one has seen Her triple, flaming soul, so brilliant and yet subdued, No one has known Her secret ways that labyrinth the soul, No one can dance Her birthing song, so deep and suffering true, Unless her names she chants again or gathers the spring morning dew. She was standing before me, a crone with leathery skin and a crêpe neck, but eyes that sparkled with vibrancy and youth that pierced my soul with a knowingness of ageless wisdom. So deeply did her eyes penetrate me, and with such discomfort that I glanced away. She pointed her crooked, ancient finger back over her shoulder to hot red fields of molten lava that were pouring forth as a rich cake batter might have spilled in folds upon itself as it emptied from a baker’s mixing bowl. Through intense heated air, I could see massive pools of percolating magma fed by liquefied rock cascading down a mountain. From the lava pools, four bubbling, red-hot rivers curved downstream and away into a distant, smoke-hazed horizon. In a silence where all is understood, the wisdom woman brought forth from her cloak an ordinary shovel and held it out to me. With her other hand, she pointed upward to the distant falling streams of molten lava. I accepted the shovel and set off in the direction she indicated. With an intuition of knowing the destination and then floating into it with a kind of spiritual momentum, I looked behind me to see if the crone was following, but she had faded into darkness and invisibility with only the sound of her laughter lingering in the aura of fire. 3 4 The Gospel of Sophia • First Seal As I started to ascend the mountain and headed toward the rim of the summit, I could see a fountainhead of the thick folding, churning streams of molten rock. Tightly holding the shovel as my walking stick, I seemed to use a type of dream-will to pole vault and weightlessly propel myself over the streams and pools of liquid fire. Yet, in little time, the intense heat had melted the blade, leaving only the handle. But this was of no concern to me as I vision-willed myself to the top of the summit without the constraints of ordinary physics. In a dimension of experience that was not framed in time and space, I perceived the source of the four rivers of molten rock: a huge black cube, suspended a few feet off the liquid-fire ground. Gushing streams of molten magma flowed out of four sides of the black cube to the rim of the summit and cascaded down the mountainside. What was this mysterious dark cube? How could I reach it? Feeling the presence of someone other than myself on the precipice of the fiery threshold, I turned my head, and there was the wisdom woman standing in her knowingness with a warm and loving smile. “How could you be here?” I questioned her without words. “Without a walking stick?” “How can I get to the black cube?” Her silent language told me to turn to the cube and hold out the remaining shovel stick that I still grasped. Following her inner directive, I turned back to the cube, held out the shovel stick, which seemed to have become an enchanted wand, and struck the cube’s ebony side in an attempt to analyze the strange formation. Instantaneously, in a whirl of mystical displacement, I found myself inside the cube, immersed in an enormous volcanic fountainhead. And there she was, standing motionless in the middle of the fiery fountain of magma: the wisdom woman. Her timeworn image had been transformed into a youthful, shimmering beauty who was holding an infant in her arms. Her heavy pleated cloak that had hidden all of her features except her face and hands had become a gossamer gown of sky blue chiffon that barely made her naked figure modest. Her hair fell below her shoulders like opulent strands of silky ribbons in a multitude of hues and tones. Her skin was luscious luminescence. Her face was perfect symmetry. Her eyes sparkled with vibrancy and youth. She approached me and, with a mother’s tender love, placed the baby in my arms. The Vision of the Triple Goddess 5 Holding the infant and gazing into its face, rushing imaginations flooded through me. The infant became a mirror of recognition. “This child is me.” My soul reflected. I saw my life stream forward in time as the four rivers of magma gushed from the cube. I was the child growing into what I had become, quite unconscious of the guiding forces of the wise woman who stood before me as mother, maiden, crone, hidden Goddess. Once hesitant to look into the eyes of the crone, I now hungered to look into her wise gaze to give me knowledge of myself. Our eyes met, and her wordless language began to pour into my heart and soul. “You have traveled this path of fire “It is time and heat, given only a simple shovel,” she thought into me. “By trusting forces to birth your beyond your physical experience, you willed yourself over fiery obstacles and higher self.” up to the volcano summit.” “Then, trusting your intuition in a place where no logic seemed operative,” she continued, “you awakened your consciousness to the time- and space- defying act of holding yourself as a babe.” Her parting thoughts to me resounded as I began to wake from my dream.

The primary texts being analyzed are Alan Moore’s Lost Girls, Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, and Michael Chabon’s prose novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. Throughout these and many other comics, queer identities reflect homophobic stereotypes rather than resisting them. Cecilia Marchetto Santorun 1 ABSTRACT William Blake’s illuminated books are full of depictions of the monstrous, like Orc’s or Urizen’s metamorphoses, bestial figures such as the Leviathan in The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (c. 1790–1793), and the masses of blood and flesh appearing in The Book of 1234567890():,; Urizen (1794). In contrast to eighteenth-century discourses in which moral virtue and monstrosity were polar opposites, Blake’s universe is more complex and presents an ambivalent attitude towards revolution and social transgression embodied in the monstrous. The meanings of the monstrous in Blake are associated with evil in his works, where it can be understood as released or repressed energies, two types which correspond, respectively, to liberation or alienation. Via countercultural influence, Blakean antinomianism filtered down to Alan Moore, for whom the notion of evil depends on perspectives; thus, in Moore, the socially unacceptable can appear as monstrous, but monstrosity is also a mode through which to make visible the oppressive order that defines transgression as such. This article will discuss Blake and Moore’s use of visual and verbal aesthetics to identify as monstrous characters like Satan, Urizen and Orc in Blake and William Gull, Asmodeus and Cthulhu in Moore to pinpoint the meanings that underlie them and how the direct or indirect Blakean influence operates in Moore’s works. This will contribute to trace changes in their meanings as they pass from signifying energy to tyranny, from unfallenness to fallenness, or from conventional to visionary perception.

    Contents Programme 2 Abstracts 4 Profiles 11 Contributor Comics 14 Supporting Organisations 17 Message from the Chair of ‘Theory and Practice: A Conference on Comics’ In 2009, I sent an email to the comix-scholars mailing list asking whether any of the list members would be interested in approaching the organisers of the Thought Bubble sequential art festival, in my hometown of Leeds, to suggest putting on a one-hour panel at the festival’s convention. The intention was to expose Thought Bubble attendees to the academic study of comics and suggest some perspectives from which the medium might be considered. The response to that email was fantastic, and it became clear that there was both the opportunity and enthusiasm to expand on the original idea. Working in concert with Thought Bubble, we slightly modified the one-hour panel ‘Seriously Into Comics’ to act as a taster session for a one- day conference to take place in parallel with the Thought Bubble convention. That conference was entitled ‘Possibilities and Perspectives: A Conference on Comics’, and it took place at the Alea Casino on the 21st of November 2009. Now, a little under a year later, we’re back in Leeds again with the second ‘Conference on Comics’, which is intended to develop and expand the themes that came to the fore last year, through a particular focus upon the intersections between theory and practice. As was the case last year, the organisation of the event has very much been a team effort, and there are many people to thank for their kind words of encouragement, their ideas and their assistance.

Her publications include contributions to Rappresentare la Shoah (2005), Cityscapes: Islands of the Self (2007), A Comics Studies Reader (2008), and Acoma Graphic Novel (2009). Alan Moore is her first monograph. “When an author is so prolific and encyclopaedic in both style and content, selectivity becomes crucial for the scholar to avoid shallowness or stereotypes”. This consideration appears in the first pages of Alan Moore. Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpel, authored by Annalisa Di Liddo, and it states, clearly and unmistakably, the main difficulty in analysing Moore’s artistic production: you need a definite approach and some criteria to select what you consider to be the main aspect of a multifaceted artistic experience that is still developing today. Di Liddo, quite a young researcher and yet a familiar profile for people dealing with comics and graphic novel, works on two basic concepts – metafiction and intertextuality – to construct a convincing approach, successfully comparing Moore to such literary author as Charles Dickens and Angela Carter.

    Alan Moore’s America: The Liberal Individual and American Identities in Watchmen MICHAEL J. PRINCE HE GRAPHIC NOVEL WATCHMEN, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED AS A SERIES OF twelve comic books in 1986 and 1987, has established Alan TMoore as among the very best writers in this medium.1 At its core is an ensemble of diverse characters that explores fundamental issues for American national identity during the second half of the twentieth century. Moore’s work performs thistaskintwoways,firstly,bypre- senting a group of diverse ideologically contingent American figures in the individual characters, and secondly, by highlighting a sacrosanct el- ementofAmerica’simageofitself,theprimacyofthe‘‘liberalindividual’’ not just as an American type but as the naturalized core of the national ethos. This article maps this subject identity into a national identity such as that typified in Benedict Anderson’s Imagined Communities,asmall-n nationalism as a successor to kinship and religion, ‘‘an imagined political community [. .] conceived as a deep, horizontal comradeship’’ (5–6). Alan Moore’s depiction of America is influenced by his love of American comics, but the thematic heft of his work is due to solid evaluative research on American history, politics, and technology. The resulting product presents a coterie of costumed heroes as players on the stage of history in a type of story that resonates with the preoccupations of post- war American culture, a conspiracy narrative that highlights the issues of individual and collective identity and agency. Watchmen is an alternative history that starts on October 12, 1985 and runs to early the following year. While it frequently references historical occurrences until 1970, it covers a time period in the immediate past barely a year previous to publication.
