Welcome from the headmaster

IAPS sport and Eastbourne College welcomes all schools, players, officials and supporters to the regional boys U11 hockey tournament 2019. Eastbourne College are very proud to be hosting this regional qualifier for boys hockey with the very rich history the College has with boys hockey on the county, regional and national stage. This programme should contain all the information you need to know for the day but if you are unsure about anything then please do contact us before the event or speak to a member of Eastbourne College staff on the day. We always welcome feedback and if there is something you feel would help improve the tournament, whether this is feedback to IAPS or the College, then please do email the Director of Sport, Mike Harrison, at [email protected] Tom Lawson Headmaster Welcome from iaps

The 2017–2018 sports programme saw over 20,000 children participate in 130 events across 22 different sports. The 2018–2019 programme will see 154 events take place across both team and individual sports. To see a full list of the sports events available, visit our website: sport.iaps.uk. Boys hockey Thank you for booking onto an IAPS boys hockey qualifier. It is exciting to see our tournaments growing year on year. This year there will be nine U11 qualifying rounds and six U13 qualifiers. To ensure consistency, IAPS has created the draws and timings for all the qualifying tournaments. IAPS has consulted England Hockey to ensure that all age groups are playing within the recommended guidance. U11 children should play no more than 90 minutes of hockey per day, whilst U12 and U13 children should play no more than 105 minutes per day. The match length at each tournament has been created taking this into account. Also taken into consideration is the possibility of extra time during knockout matches. Roughly 10 minutes has been built into each qualifier to allow for any potential overrun. Whether this is your first time at an IAPS hockey qualifier or you have entered for many years, we hope your team enjoys the tournament. IAPS passionately believes in the importance of sport as part of an all-round education for its pupils. First and foremost, sport is about participation and enjoyment – good luck!

IAPS code of conduct for parents/spectators

IAPS Sports events are held in high regard by member schools. In 2017-2018, 23,000 children took part in over 100 events across 26 different sports. IAPS’s code of conduct is a set of behaviours we expect at our events. The code aims to ensure that all IAPS events are enjoyable and fair for all children involved.

As a parent/spectator at an IAPS sports event, you have a responsibility to:

1. Fully commit to this code of practice. 2. Ensure that you have read and understood IAPS safeguarding policy and procedures. 3. Be a positive role model and lead by example. 4. Remember that children are involved in sport for their enjoyment; they are not playing to satisfy your ambitions. 5. Encourage children to play by the rules. 6. Applaud good play by members of all teams not just your own. 7. Not question publicly the officials’ judgement and never their honesty. 8. Do not harass or swear at players, coaches or officials. 9. Recognise the importance of coaches. Allow them to decide what is best. They give their time, energy and experience to provide guidance for children. 10. Emphasise enjoyment and fun. Praise and reinforce effort and improvement. 11. Be aware of the physical demands that sport places on children. 12. Never ridicule or shout at any child for making a mistake or losing a competition. 13. Condemn the use of violence in all forms. 14. Teach children that effort and teamwork are as important as victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment. 15. Turn defeat into victory by helping children work towards skill improvement and a positive sporting attitude.

IAPS withholds the right to withdraw your school from sports competitions if you fail to comply with the code of conduct.
