Perencz, Béla - Baritone Perencz, Béla - Baritone Biography Béla Perencz was always influenced by classical music since his early childhood. After graduating from the conservatory, he studied opera singing at the Liszt Ferenc Music Academy in Budapest, as well as in Dresden where he received a one-year stipendium. Béla Perencz was educated by several representatives of the pre-war era and the “Battistini Belcanto School” like Magdalena Maroti, Nicola Sabo and Marta Lantieri. Furthermore, he was tutored by great artist in the Wagner tradition like Rosette Tutschek, singer awarded the title Kammersänger Otto Wiener, and Prof. Ernst Hermann. Among his last engagements are Der Wanderer/Wotan (Wagner’s Siegfried) in Oviedo and production of Siegfried in Opera North in Leeds, including tour with the production throughout UK in 2017: Birmingham, Nottingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Liverpool and London. Previous years of his career were marked by appearances as Höllander in Opera North, Amfortas (Parsifal) at the Wagner Festival in Romania, Macbeth in Opera North, Mandryka (Arabella) in the R. Strauss Festival in Budapest, Wagner’s Ring cycle in Opera North. Béla Perencz is a regular guest in the Hungarian National Opera, where he is one of the leading soloists. In the season of 2008/2009 he gave his debut as Hans Sachs in Richard Wagner’s Opera Die Meistersinger, as Johannan in Salome, as well as Pizarro in Fidelio. Béla Perencz is active in the German and Italian repertory, as well. Apart from the roles mentioned above, his leading roles are Amfortas, Wanderer, Telramund, Orest, Germont, Nabucco, Rigoletto, Jago, and Scarpia. His repertoire is extended by roles as Wotan (Die Walküre), Holländer, Kurvenal as well as Prince Bluebeard in Béla Bartok’s opera, which he has performed in 2012 under the baton of Mo.Iván Fischer. Béla Perencz was guest in several European countries and in Japan. Amongst the most important interpretations is listed his Jago in Gilbert Duflo’s Othello production conducted by Kasuchi Ono, Telramund in the 150 years jubilee production in Weimar conducted by George Alexander Albrecht as well as that in the production of Katherina Wagner. He was performing the role of Hary János in Montpellier, and Paris. The same role he performed in Vienna, too, all conducted by Adam Fischer. He sang Wanderer (Siegfried) in Christina Mielitz’s production and same in Barrie Kosky’s Ring in Hannover. In Japan he sang Rigoletto and Scarpia with huge success. Within the 2010 Budapest “Wagner Days” festival he appeared as Telramund with world star partners and Mo.Ádám Fischer conducting. In 2012 he made his British debut with the Opera North singing Walküre/Wotan with great success and has appeared in the Bergen National Opera’s gala concerts in November 2012. Following the success of the Walküre Wotan he got re-invitations from Opera North where triumphed later on as Machbeth, Flying Dutchman and Siegfried Wanderer – this latter with the whole Ring cycle has been broadcasted on the BBC Arts online and BBC IPlayer and got the very important Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Opera and Music Theatre. Béla Perencz worked together with such outstanding conductors as Mo. Giuseppe Patane, Horst Stein, Lorin Mazel, Claudio Abbado, Kasuchi Ono, Adam Fischer, Janos Kovács, Georg Alexander Albrecht, Arthur Fagen, Imre Palló and Tomomi Nishimoto.     A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

    A Culture of Recording: Christopher Raeburn and the Decca Record Company Sally Elizabeth Drew A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of Music This work was supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council September 2018 1 2 Abstract This thesis examines the working culture of the Decca Record Company, and how group interaction and individual agency have made an impact on the production of music recordings. Founded in London in 1929, Decca built a global reputation as a pioneer of sound recording with access to the world’s leading musicians. With its roots in manufacturing and experimental wartime engineering, the company developed a peerless classical music catalogue that showcased technological innovation alongside artistic accomplishment. This investigation focuses specifically on the contribution of the recording producer at Decca in creating this legacy, as can be illustrated by the career of Christopher Raeburn, the company’s most prolific producer and specialist in opera and vocal repertoire. It is the first study to examine Raeburn’s archive, and is supported with unpublished memoirs, private papers and recorded interviews with colleagues, collaborators and artists. Using these sources, the thesis considers the history and functions of the staff producer within Decca’s wider operational structure in parallel with the personal aspirations of the individual in exerting control, choice and authority on the process and product of recording. Having been recruited to Decca by John Culshaw in 1957, Raeburn’s fifty-year career spanned seminal moments of the company’s artistic and commercial lifecycle: from assisting in exploiting the dramatic potential of stereo technology in Culshaw’s Ring during the 1960s to his serving as audio producer for the 1990 The Three Tenors Concert international phenomenon.

    “Untouchable” and ”Most Recommendable” Opera Recordings: a very personal guide by Ralph Moore My handful of regular readers might have noticed some glaring omissions in the list of thirty-seven major operas whose discographies I have surveyed over the last couple of years - operas whose quality and popularity are such that one might reasonably have expected me to have included them in my labours. There are, after all, probably around fifty truly first-rate operas which have been most often performed and recorded and I have by no means covered them all. I received requests to survey some of the following but on consideration, I realised that there were good reasons for my reluctance to do so. The most obvious omissions are these twelve operas: Verdi’s La traviata and Il trovatore; Wagner’s Lohengrin and Tannhäuser; Mozart’s Don Giovanni; Puccini’s La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot; Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia; Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Beethoven’s Fidelio. My reason for not having reviewed them collectively is that either the opera in question has received one or two recordings of such definitive quality that consideration of the others is otiose or there are so many good recordings of it in the catalogue that making a helpful or meaningful recommendation becomes difficult. I have therefore decided to circumvent the problem by making some brief, annotated recommendations and guidance for those major operas hitherto neglected. Obviously, my selections are highly subjective and controversial, and other collectors will be dismayed that I have ostensibly rejected their own candidates for recordings of classic status or nominated one they loathe but at the same time I think I may fairly claim that these are, in general, recordings which have stood the test of time.

    Richard Strauss’ Capriccio - A survey of the discography by Ralph Moore Strauss’ swansong opera Capriccio is not especially well represented in the catalogue; of the 22 complete recordings listed in the CLOR catalogue, only around a dozen have ever been available on CD and the rest were on video. Of those CD issues, several are no longer available and only three are studio recordings; two are radio broadcasts and the remainder are live or live composite stage performances. I consider here ten recordings, including all three of those studio accounts. The libretto was based on an original concept by Stefan Zweig, who had fled to the USA after the rise of the Nazis and committed suicide earlier in the year of the opera’s premiere, 1942. It was further developed by his successor as Strauss’ librettist, Josef Gregor, then Strauss himself took it over before passing it to his conductor friend Clemens Krauss – incidentally, possessor of one of the most blatant comb-overs in history - who completed it with continued input from the composer. The text is witty and more enjoyable if the libretto is to hand or you speak German. Like Strauss’ domestic comedy Intermezzo, Capriccio is wordy and conversational, but its intellectual and philosophical content is certainly higher and couched in some of the most sublime music Strauss ever penned. As a result, it is more popular and frequently performed than other of his late works. It is a vehicle for a supreme singer-actress with a creamy voice and a gift for enlivening text; noted performers who made recordings include Krauss’ second wife, Viorica Ursuleac, Lisa Della Casa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Gundula Janowitz, Kiri Te Kanawa and, more recently, Renée Fleming.

    DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982.

    CELEBRATE BEETHOVEN CATALOGUE LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770–1827) Born in Bonn in 1770, the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop’s Kapellmeister, Beethoven moved in 1792 to Vienna. There he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness had made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers.
