The Jewel in the Emerald Necklace of the City of Lviv
HALYNA PETRYSHYN*, OLHA KRYVORUCHKO**, HALYNA LUKASHCHUK*, STEPAN TUPIS’* THE PARK IN ST. YURI (ST. GEORGE) SQUARE – THE JEWEL IN THE EMERALD NECKLACE OF THE CITY OF LVIV SKWER NA PLACU ŚW. JURY – KLEJNOT W SZMARAGDOWYM NASZYJNIKU LWOWA Abstract The most valuable parks in Lviv were designed by the famous city gardener Arnold Röhring, who managed to combine in the art of landscape design the different styles of the turn of 20th century. If the large parks of the city are under state protection, the smaller ones designed as public gardens, boulevards, gardens near the villas are constantly being rebuilt and destroyed. The results of the study of the park in St. Yuri Square in Lviv give grounds for considering this park an authentic monument of landscape art of the end of the 19th century, where its compositional structure and state of rare old-growth species of trees and shrubs are well preserved. Keywords: Lviv parks, landscape design, public gardens, Arnold Röhring Streszczenie Najcenniejsze parki we Lwowie zostały zaprojektowane przez słynnego ogrodnika miejskiego Arnol- da Röhringa, któremu udało się połączyć w sztuce projektowania krajobrazu różne style przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Jeśli duże parki miasta są pod ochroną państwa, mniejsze, zaprojektowane jako ogrody pu- bliczne, skwery, bulwary, ogrody w pobliżu willi, stale są przebudowane i niszczone. Badania skweru na placu św. Jury we Lwowie dają podstawy do uznania go autentycznym zabytkiem sztuki krajobrazowej z końca XIX wieku, w którym struktura kompozycyjna i stan starodrzewu rzadkich gatunków są dobrze zachowane. Appendices I
Appendices I. Archival Sources Archival research for this monograph was conducted in Lviv, the former capital of Galicia, in 1983. To orient myself in the rich archival holdings of this city, I benefitted from the unpublished manuscript of Patricia K. Grimsted's forthcoming guide to Soviet Ukrainian archives and manuscript repositories' as well as from a number of published works.' Plans to use archives in Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk were frustrated, as was the plan to use the manuscript collection of the Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (in Kiev). Work in the Austrian archives in 1982 did not uncover sources of direct relevance to the subject of this monograph, but the Viennese archives remain an important and little-explored repository of historical documentation on Galician history. The richest collection of unpublished sources on the history of Galicia during the Austrian period is located in the Central State Historical Archives of the Ukrainian SSR in Lviv (U Tsentrainyi derzhavnyi istorychnyi arkhiv URSR u rn. Lvovi; abbre- viated as TsDIAL). The Central Archives have inherited the papers of various Galician government institutions and major civic organizations. Unfortunately, there is no published guide to these archives, although a number of articles describe aspects of their holdings.' The papers of the Presidium of the Galician Viceroy's Office (U Haiytske narnisnytstvo, rn. Lviv. Prezydiia) are contained in TsDIAL, fond 146, opysy 4-8 (and presumably others). Particularly valuable for this study were documents dealing with the publication and confiscation of political brochures and periodicals, including , Patricia K. -
Sacred Elements in Historical Western Ukrainian Oikonymy
DOI: 10.308161ICONN412017155 Sacred elements in historical Western Ukrainian oikonymy Yaroslav Redkva Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Ukraine Abstract: The place of sacred toponymy is determined by the important role of religion in society. Therefore, sacred interests are at the centre of a person’s atten- tion, as they constitute a reflection in his/her consciousness of deep mental fea- tures rooted in the genesis of any nation. In accounting for a system of developmental factors and geographical and spatial organisation of territorial toponymic systems, the detection and establishment of regularities in their formation and functioning is impossible without establishing the origin of historical names of settlements, a considerable part of which are oik- onyms whose etymology contains a significant sacred element. Sacred names of places of the former Ruske Woyewodstwo (in the fourteenth to twenty-first centuries) are analysed in this paper. At present, the area is a territory comprising modern Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, and Ternopil Oblasts (Western Ukraine), in particular, Богородичин/Bohorodychyn, Богородчани/ Bohorodchany, *Вознесіння/*Voznesinnia, Воскресинці/Voskresyntsi, Спас/ Spas, Троїця/Troitsia, Хвалибога/Khvalyboha. It has been established as a basis of etymological analysis that place names in the aforementioned area make up a particular onomastic (oikonymic) field, united by the meaning of sacredness. They hold an important place in the religious world model of Ukrainians despite unjustified ideological attempts to forcefully rename them in the Soviet period. Keywords: anthroponym, oikonym, sacred place name, toponymic systems, ono- mastic field. In any society the religious sphere carries out major spiritual and cultural func- tions. It encompasses practising different cults (prayer, rites, and holidays) that take place in different cult buildings (churches, monasteries, religious communities, etc.). -

Gezmek Bir Zamanlar Insan Ve Evren Arasında Var Olan Uyumu Tekrar Kurar.’’ Anatole France
‘’Gezmek bir zamanlar insan ve evren arasında var olan uyumu tekrar kurar.’’ Anatole France LVİV GEZİ REHBERİ; Lviv, Ukrayna'nın batısında, Polonya’ya 70 kilometre uzaklıkta bulunan bir şehir. Toplamda 860.000 kişilik nüfusunun %88'i Ukraynalı, %8'i Rus, %1'i de Polonyalı. -

Similarities and Differences2 Abstract 100 years of constitutionalism of two neighbouring European states – Czechoslo- vakia, later becoming the Czech Republic, and Poland – encourage a reflection on the paths of development of their respective constitutions, on the historical stages and successive political transformations, not just in the context of individual con- stitutionalisms of each of those states but with an emphasis on the similarities and differences in this domain. And this is what this study focuses on. Starting from the common fate of rebirth of both states after WWI through the inter-war efforts to establish democratic constitutional systems and the obstacles found on the way, followed by the post-WWII period of real socialism ending with the era of trans- formations and stabilisation as democratic states of law. The text explores all the similarities found in both general aspects – like the references to the European tra- dition of parliamentary governance – and in certain specific solutions – like the dif- ferences in the concept of the two-chamber parliament. But there are also situations occurring in only one of the states, e.g. the federalisation of Czechoslovakia, the emergence of two separate states of the Czechs and Slovaks, or the differences in the course and sequence of events of democratic transformations in each of the states in the 1980s, which brings us to the conclusion that despite all the possible diffe- rences, the two constitutional systems have actually been very similar to each other. -
LANDSCAPE ORGANIZATION of MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE in the CREATIVE WORK of ARNOLD RÖHRING (Squares, Streets and Parks of the City)
Posatskyy Bohdan, Mykhailo Hrytsak LANDSCAPE ORGANIZATION OF MONUMENTAL SCULPTURE IN THE CREATIVE WORK OF ARNOLD RÖHRING (squares, streets and parks of the city) Lviv Polytechnic National University 12, Bandery str., 79013 Lviv, Ukraine, [email protected] Received: December 05,2016 / Revised: / Accepted: © Posatskyy B., Hrytsak M., 2016 Abstract. The article deals with the landscape arrangement of monumental sculptures in the creative work of Arnold Rӧhring. The text reviews the role and the importance of landscape arrangement of monumental sculptures in the architectural composition of the city of Lviv. Examples of works of monumental sculpture of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries are described in the article. Keywords: monumental sculpture, Arnold Rӧhring, landscape organization, city parks. 1. Introduction The city center of Lviv is characterized by richness and diversity of natural, urban and architectural forms, which, together, form a unique historical landscape-architectural complex. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the city center developed rapidly by building up, mainly, the southern sector of the city. After construction of an underground reservoir for the Poltva river, a new central cell began to be formed. Construction of a considerable number of residential and public buildings led, among others, to erection of the building of the Diet of Galicia and Lodomeria. According to the principles of urban contemporary European development, the planning of planted boulevards and city parks was initiated. On the boulevards, squares and parks there were located monumental sculptures, mostly the memorials of famous public figures, writers and poets. The tradition of combination of sculptures and objects of the landscape in Europe goes back to Ancient Rome. -
The Ambiguities of Soviet “Piedmonts”: Soviet Borderland
THE AMBIGUITIES OF SOVIET “PIEDMONTS”: SOVIET BORDERLAND POLICIES IN THE UKRAINIAN SSR AND THE MOLDOVAN ASSR, 1922-1934 Alexandr Voronovici A DISSERTATION in History Presented to the Faculties of the Central European University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Budapest, Hungary 2016 CEU eTD Collection Supervisor: Professor Alexei Miller ii Copyright in the text of this dissertation rests with the author. I hereby declare that this dissertation contains no materials accepted for any other degrees and no materials previously written and/or published by another person unless otherwise noted. CEU eTD Collection iii Abstract The dissertation analyzes Soviet borderland policies in the Ukrainian SSR and the Moldovan ASSR in the 1920s and early 1930s. Adopting the situational approach, I explore the Soviet struggle for borderlands on the Western border and the role of the cross-border cultural ties in it. The dissertation argues that the negotiations, different interpretations and the interplay between actors on both sides of the Soviet Western border influenced and framed the evolution of borderland policies in the Ukrainian SSR and the Moldovan ASSR in 1920s. Although, the Soviet Union was a centralized state with a disciplined party, there was still considerable space for conflicting interpretations of Moscow's directives and the promotion of personal agenda by Soviet leaders and activists.
