HAPPY HOME SCHOOL SYSTEM MRS. MARYAM FARUQI Tribute to a Pioneer in Education Mrs. Maryam Faruqi is a well-known name in the educational circles of Pakistan. She is the founder of the Happy Home School System. FAMILY HISTORY: Her success can be attributed to her passion for education and the restless desire to utilize her potential for the service of humanity. She was born in India to Sir Ebrahim and Lady Hawabai Ebrahim Haroon Jaffer. Her father tried to create an educational awakening amongst the Muslims and laid the foundation of the Bombay Provincial Muslim Educational Conference which was affiliated to the All India Mohammedan Educational Conference of Aligarh. He also set up a school in Pune which is to date offering excellent education to Muslim girls. EARLY EDUCATION: Her education started from the Islamia School, Pune, which is now a full-fledged school named after her parents. When she topped in grade- 6, she was asked by the Headmistress to teach Urdu to class-V. She felt on top of the world when at the end of the period the Headmistress remarked, “I bet you will be a good Headmistress.” That was her first success. She gave her Matriculation Examination through the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Pune and acquired First Merit Position. Her name remains etched on the Honour Roll Board. She joined the prestigious Naurosji Wadia College and her outstanding intermediate results earned her the Moosa Qasim Gold Medal. In 1945, she graduated from Bombay University with distinction & was awarded a Gold Medal in B.A Honours. -

18 ianuarie 2017 Recital muzica clasica persana Despre sufi şi muzica persană Muzica sufi are rol devoţional şi de meditaţie şi este practicată de membrii comunităţii ce poartă acest nume. Mişcarea sufi a început în India (pe teritoriul actualului Pakistan) în secolul VIII şi este răspândit astăzi mai ales în Persia, dar şi în Liban, Turcia şi India. În centrul vieţii acestei mişcări se află iubirea reciprocă dintre Dumnezeu şi oameni, respingând, prin urmare, ideea inaccesibilităţii lui Dumnezeu. Filosofia sa este influenţată de mai multe religii: creştinism gnostic, buddhism, zoroastrism, hinduism şi are la bază apropierea faţă de Dumnezeu prin cunoaştere mistică, iubire şi asceză. De-a lungul secolelor, poeţii sufi au devenit cunoscuţi în întreaga lume: Rumi, Hafiz, Bulleh Shah, Amir Khusrow sau Khwaja Ghulam Farid. Cel mai cunoscut gen al muzicii sufi este qawwali întâlnit în special în India şi Pakistanul de astăzi, însă este parte şi din ceremonialul Sema al Dervişilor rotitori, a cărui muzică se numeşte ayin, un gen vocal instrumental popular în Turcia. Un alt gen care aparţine culturii din Vestul Africii este gnawa, iar sufi din Indonezia, Afghanistan şi Moroc folosesc, de asemenea, muzica în practica lor. Genurile laice ale sufiţilor sunt ghazals şi kafi, piese acompaniate de percuţie şi armoniu, scrise pe versuri ale poeţilor menţionaţi anterior. Muzica clasică persană este una modală şi monodică, asemănătoare din punct de vedere al concepţiei celei bizantine şi celei indiene. Cel mai spectaculos în lumea maqamurilor este acordajul. Putem găsi în interiorul unei scări muzicale trei distante de trei sferturi de ton, incredibil de consonante în structura acestora. -

Sufi poetry promotes social integration and tolerance Jan – June 2021 Sufi poetry promotes social integration and tolerance: an analysis on teaching contents at University level education in Pakistan Dr. Ali Murad Lajwani* Abstract The family is a first social institution of every human on earth. Every one of us learns social skills and nurturing practices within the sphere of the family in early years of age. The social, moral, and cognitive development remains associated with the family members in this way. When age turns to adolescence, the academic journey enters at higher education institution i.e., University. During academic journey at university level students take social responsibilities on their shoulders – truly students think analytically on careers opting from the market and becoming independent in secondary and tertiary social spheres. This age group is very critical for young generation, where family members allow their sons and daughters to closely interact with people and build their own viewpoint. Unfortunately, this age group is involved in extremist and terrorist activities. The subjects of technologies, natural sciences, and social sciences are taught to become skillful professionals for getting maximum financial return in the society. Unfortunately, the syllabus related to forgiveness, tolerance, spirituality, religious harmony or the message of spiritual Saints is not explored and taught at required level. As a result students get a comprehensive knowledge on particular disciplines. The education of tolerance and interfaith harmony is not included anywhere in the course outlines and teaching practices – nobody can guarantee that such students would not become suicide bombing agents but the education of tolerance and interfaith harmony, the comprehensive teachings practices on tolerance can guarantee us on promoting the social integration, tolerance among the future generations. -

The founder of Pakistan Quaid e Azam Muhmmad Ali Jinnah gifted liberty to the minorities in Pakistan and constitution of Pakistan safeguards the fundamental rights of Non-Muslims. Non-Muslim Minorities in Pakistan (Sikhs, Hindus and Christians etc.) have awarded freedom to go their religious places for practicing their religious obligations. Government of Pakistan has established Evacuee Trust Property Board under Act No. XIII of 1975 (which was promulgated on 1st July 1974) for management, control and disposal of the Evacuee Trust properties all over Pakistan. Undoubtedly, Pakistan is a Muslim majority country with multi-religious and multi-sectarian population. Though, we keep hearing about events of inter and intra religious intolerance every now and then. This research papers gives a comprehensive detail about the interfaith harmony at Shrines in Pakistan in order to prove that all the news we are getting through print media, electronic media or social media about religious intolerance in Pakistan is only one side of picture. Withal throwing light on the interfaith harmonious culture at Shrines, it aims to explore the concept of religious harmony or interfaith harmony. This paper briefly encapsulates the background of different shrines in Pakistan and the communities visiting them. -

Taylor Spring 2018 Abstract “Path(s) of Remembrance: Memory, Pilgrimage, and Transmission in a Transatlantic Sufi Community” by Jaison Carter Doctor of Philosophy in Anthropology University of California, Berkeley Professor Mariane Ferme, Chair The Mustafawiyya Tariqa is a regional spiritual network that exists for the purpose of assisting Muslim practitioners in heightening their level of devotion and knowledges through Sufism. Though it was founded in 1966 in Senegal, it has since expanded to other locations in West and North Africa, Europe, and North America. In 1994, protegé of the Tariqa’s founder and its most charismatic figure, Shaykh Arona Rashid Faye al-Faqir, relocated from West Africa to the United States to found a satellite community in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. This location, named Masjidul Muhajjirun wal Ansar, serves as a refuge for traveling learners and place of worship in which a community of mostly African-descended Muslims engage in a tradition of remembrance through which techniques of spiritual care and healing are activated. This dissertation analyzes the physical and spiritual trajectories of African-descended Muslims through an ethnographic study of their healing practices, migrations, and exchanges in South Carolina and in Senegal. By attending to manner in which the Mustafawiyya engage in various kinds of embodied religious devotions, forms of indebtedness, and networks within which diasporic solidarities emerge, this project explores the dispensations and transmissions of knowledge to Sufi practitioners across the Atlantic that play a part in shared notions of Black Muslimness. -

Rethinking Majlis’ politics: Pre-1948 Muslim concerns in Hyderabad State M. A. Moid and A. Suneetha Anveshi Research Centre for Women’s Studies, Hyderabad In the historiography of Hyderabad State, pre-1948 Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (Majlis) figures as a separatist, communal and fanatical political formation. For the nationalist, Hindu and left politics in this region, Majlis has long stood for the ‘other’, wherein concerns articu- lated by it get discredited. In this article, we argue that there is a need to rethink the Majlis’ political perspective and its articulation of Muslim concerns by placing them in the context of the momentous political developments in the first half of the twentieth century. Caught between the imminent decline of the Asaf Jahi kingdom and the arrival of democratic politics, the Majlis saw the necessity of popular will but also the dangers of majoritarianism during such transitions and fought against the threat of imminent minoritisation of Muslims in the Hyderabad State. This article draws on the Urdu writings on the Majlis and Bahadur Yar Jung’s speeches that have been rarely used in Telugu or English writings on this period. Remembering Partition: Violence, Nationalism and History in India Gyanendra Pandey CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS Remembering Partition Violence, Nationalism and History in India Through an investigation of the violence that marked the partition of British India in 1947, this book analyses questions of history and mem- ory, the nationalisation of populations and their pasts, and the ways in which violent events are remembered (or forgotten) in order to en- sure the unity of the collective subject – community or nation. Stressing the continuous entanglement of ‘event’ and ‘interpretation’, the author emphasises both the enormity of the violence of 1947 and its shifting meanings and contours. The book provides a sustained critique of the procedures of history-writing and nationalist myth-making on the ques- tion of violence, and examines how local forms of sociality are consti- tuted and reconstituted by the experience and representation of violent events. It concludes with a comment on the different kinds of political community that may still be imagined even in the wake of Partition and events like it. GYANENDRA PANDEY is Professor of Anthropology and History at Johns Hopkins University. He was a founder member of the Subaltern Studies group and is the author of many publications including The Con- struction of Communalism in Colonial North India (1990) and, as editor, Hindus and Others: the Question of Identity in India Today (1993).
