AGENCY: National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Commerce. ACTION: Proposed rule; request for comments. SUMMARY: We, NMFS, have completed comprehensive status reviews under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 82 reef-building coral species in response to a petition submitted by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) to list the species as either threatened or endangered. We have determined, based on the best scientific and commercial data available and efforts being made to protect the species, that 12 of the petitioned coral species warrant listing as endangered (five Caribbean and seven Indo-Pacific), 54 coral species warrant listing as threatened (two Caribbean and 52 Indo-Pacific), and 16 coral species (all Indo-Pacific) do not warrant listing as threatened or endangered under the ESA. Additionally, we have determined, based on the best scientific and commercial information available and efforts undertaken to protect the species, two Caribbean coral species currently listed warrant reclassification from threatened to 1 endangered. We are announcing that 18 public hearings will be held during the public comment period to provide additional opportunities and formats to receive public input. The state of the art in the study of reef-building scleractinian corals and reefs is presented. The scleractinian fauna of Vietnam is shown to match in species diversity (350 species of 80 genera) the tropical coral fauna of the Indonesian–Malacca fertile center, from which Indo-Pacific reef-building corals originated. The whole Vietnam coast from the Gulf of Tonkin to the Gulf of Siam is a biogeographically single whole and is a part of the Indo-Polynesian Province of the Indo-Pacific Area. Evolution and ecology of coral range dynamics under climate change Sun Wook Kim M.Sc., B.Sc. A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2019 School of Biological Sciences Abstract The geographic distribution of a species represents its ecological niche and spatial variability in fitness. A species’ fitness peaks where the environment and biotic interactions provide optimal conditions for a given combination of traits and ebbs as the conditions become less suitable. As such, spatial differences in trait expression provide a framework on which species range dynamics can be evaluated. Over time, the boundaries of species ranges can undergo expansions, contractions, and shifts. The labile nature of species ranges has been attributed to the spatial tracking and/or changes in the extent of niche space. The ability of a species to track and/or modify its niche is strongly determined by the degree and rate of climate change. While some species may track their environmental niches, many others are likely to suffer local/regional extirpations since their ability to track or modify species characteristics to changing conditions lags behind the rates of climate change. At present, even the most rudimentary information on spatial variations in species traits and fitness is lacking for many taxon groups. In addition, current research is heavily focused on species range cores, with range dynamics under climate change in peripheral regions remaining underexplored. In this thesis, I focus on scleractinian corals as study organisms. Scleractinian corals form a pivotal taxon group that sustains reef ecosystem diversity, show historical and contemporary shifts in species ranges, and are under substantial threat from changing climatic conditions. -

ZOOXanthellate SCLERACTINIAN CORALS OF THE northern COAST OF SULAWESI BY PATRICK SCAPS,1 VIANNEY DENIS,1 SIEGFRIED BERHIMPON,2 AND FRANKY RUNTUKAHU2 ABSTRACT The coral reefs of the Pulisan region, located at the northeast of the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, were studied in order to acquire information concerning their richness in zooxanthellate scleractinian corals. Twenty-one sites were thus prospected covering a total surface of 74 km². In total, 376 species belonging to 65 genera and 14 families were observed during this study with an average-per-survey site of 109 species. Acropora, Montipora and Porites were the genera with the most species on Pulisan region reefs with 64, 24 and 23 species, respectively. Various estimates of the number of species suggest more than 400, making this area one of the most diversified in zooxanthellate scleractinian corals in the world for such a small area covered and placing it at the epicenter of the triangle of coral diversity. INTRODUCTION Stretching in an east-west direction for approximately 5,000 km and comprising an estimated 17,508 islands, Indonesia is the largest archipelagic nation in the world. Indonesian coral reefs cover the largest surface area in the world (85,707 km2), which represents about 14% of the world total (Tomascik et al., 1997) and they are situated in the geographic zone of highest biodiversity, hence their intrinsic and patrimonial interest.
