The early days of the formation of the band in their hometown of Athens, Georgia and their first Perfect Circle: The Story of REM at making music together are covered in detail with references from various friends who saw them through their formative days. They were heavily bolstered by a healthy local music scene which was open to embracing the new wave of sounds together with a healthy student population and college radio network which was prepared to air their music. Of course their dues were paid and their act was honed by playing live and most of the period was spent on the road. Supported by a sympathetic record label in IRS, they were lucky enough to have artistic license even from their early days and it was only when they veered from their Athens comfort zone and relocated to London to record their third album, Fables Of The Reconstructionthat they hit their first stumbling block. Jacknife Lee
Jacknife Lee It is fair to say that Jacknife Lee has become one of the most sought after and highly influential producers currently at work. Lee’s career has encompassed work with some of the biggest and most influential artists on both sides of the Atlantic in the shape of Taylor Swift, U2, R.E.M., Kasabian, Robbie Williams and Neil Diamond. His work on U2’s “How To Dismantle An Atom Bomb” saw him collect two Grammy Awards in 2006 as well as Producer of the Year at the UK MMF Awards. He was also again Grammy nominated in 2013 for his work on Swift’s multi-million selling album “Red.” Currently working on what looks set to be the biggest album from Scottish alt-rock heroes Twin Atlantic and the debut album from The Gossip’s Beth Ditto, Lee has also produced a handful of tracks on Jake Bugg’s upcoming third album and is just about to commence work with Two Door Cinema Club after their successful collaboration on Beacon two years previously. In 2014, Lee was honoured to be asked to co-produce Neil Diamond’s “Melody Road” album alongside the tremendously talented Don Was. “Melody Road” debuted at #3 in America and #4 in the UK as it received universal critical acclaim. Lee has gained much recognition as a writer producer over the last five years. In 2014 also Lee co write and produced various singles for Kodaline’s second album “Coming Up For Air” which peaked at #2, while he also produced and co-wrote Twin Atlantic’s Radio 1 A-listed singles “Heart and Soul” and “Brothers and Sisters.” In addition, Lee spent some of the year writing and producing track for alternative urban artist Raury. -

ASTRAL WEEKS? – IT’S NOT JUST ME, … THE RECORDING Van: “The entire LP was recorded in two eight-hour sessions, plus two overdub sessions. That was the whole album.” (Yorke p.51). Astral Weeks was recorded in just two sessions (48 hours) at Century Sound Studios, on West 52nd Street in New York (25 September & 15 October 1968), using NY session (jazz) musicians: Richard Davis (bass), Connie Kay (drums) from the Modern Jazz Quartet, Warren Smith Jr. (percussionist/vibraphone), John Payne (flute/soprano saxophone), and Jay Berliner (guitar), chosen by Lew Merenstein (Producer) in consultation with Richard Davis (bassist). “Merenstein received a call from Warner Bros: ‘We’ve signed Van Morrison, go up to Boston, see what he’s got’. … Morrison played Merenstein his song Astral Weeks: ‘Thirty seconds into it my whole being was vibrating … I had to be the producer to do it. Not that producer, not that producer, regardless of their accomplishments. It had to be Richard (Davis), not that bass player, I don’t want to sound existential, but there was Van, and that was it; there was no band, there were no arrangements, the direction was him singing and playing – that was where I followed. That’s why it came out like it did. To this day, it gives me pain to hear it; pain is the wrong word – I’m so moved by it.” (Marcus p.52-8). 11 In Which Yet Another Pompous Blowhard Purports to Possess the True Meaning of Punk Rock Lester Bangs All the shit they play on the radio today-it lacks the true meaning of rock, which is sex, subversion, and style. Rock 'n' roll is pagan and primitive and very jungle, and that's how it should be. The moment it stops being those things, it's dead. -Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McClaren (Kohut and Kohut 1994, 18) The kids want misery and death. They want threatening noises because that shakes you out of your apathy. -John Lydon of the Sex Pistols (Kohut and Kohut 1994, 101) Lester Bangs is the most celebrated critic in the history of rock. A wild man and visionary armed with a pugnacious attitude and original writing style, which he claimed was based on the sound and language of rock and roll itself (Bangs 1987, ix), he was an early champion of punk rock. According to Bangs, punk means rock "in its most basic, primitive form," and it has thus been around from the beginnings of rock 'n' roll. Here he expounds upon what he sees as the true meaning of not only punk, but of rock itself, delivering a manifesto for both: the essence is passion. Rock must be first and foremost "a raw wail from the bottom of the guts." Punk rock was hardly invented by the Ramones in Qyeens, NY, in 1974-5, any more than it was by the Sex Pistols in London a year or so later. You have to go back to the New York Dolls. -

This interview with MIKE MILLS of R.E.M. was conducted by the Library of Congress on March 23, 2018 Mike Mills Library of Congress: Quite famously, there are two versions of “Radio Free Europe”-- one on Hib-Tone and a later one that was done for I.R.S. Records. Listening to them today, do you prefer one version over the other? Mike Mills: I think everyone in the band has gone on record as saying that they prefer the Hib- Tone version compared to the one on the album. It was rawer, and done with a little more energy and abandon, which often makes for a more exciting recording. LOC: What was writing “Radio Free Europe” like? All four members of the band are listed as the songwriter on the label. MM: I wrote the verse and B-section late one night while sitting alone downstairs in an Athens record store while a party was going on upstairs. The store was closed, and I was playing an unamplified electric guitar as I was listening to the party. [For “Radio Free Europe,”] later, Peter wrote the chorus and bridge, and Michael [Stipe] supplied the melody and lyrics. Peter [Buck] made the suggestion early on that we share all the writing credits equally, because songwriters get the income from publishing, and unequal income distribution is one of the primary causes of bands breaking up. “So,” Peter said, “let’s just take that out of the equation.” LOC: At this time, who do you think, musically, were your biggest influences? MM: My influences came from all over the place.
