Peters VA Hosts Valentines for Veterans 2010 During the week of February 7-14, the James J. Peters VA Medical Center celebrated the 32nd Annual National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans. The National Salute is a week-long celebration of special thanks that occurs during the week marked by Valentines Day. During this time, VA Medical Centers across the country invite local celebrities, elected officials and school children to visit veterans and to bring them some Valentines Day cheer. This year, the Medical Center hosted Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez; Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton; and Miss Teen USA Stormi Henley; along with State Senator Jeff Klein and members of the SUNY Maritime Color Guard. "The National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans gives everyone a chance to let our veterans know just how very much they are appreciated," said Medical Center Director, MaryAnn Musumeci, "We’re excited to welcome Miss Fernandez, Miss Dalton, Miss Henley and Senator Klein. Their participation just heightens the celebration and brings a special note of cheer to our veterans.” Musumeci said she hopes visitors will also learn more about the important roles volunteers play at the medical center throughout the year and perhaps pursue volunteer opportunities. "Our medical center’s 464 volunteers are an important part of our health care team and donate over 85,000 hours of their precious time to our veterans. It considers the construction and uses of ‘childhood’ as a conceptual category and the ways in which this informed intervention in the lives of children, particularly in the spheres of education and juvenile justice. Aligned with its vision of An Active and Winning Nation, its primary focuses are on providing opportunities for all South Africans to participate in sport; managing the regulatory framework; and providing funding for different codes of sport. The SRSA has a number of flagship programmes through which it implements its objectives. These programmes touch the lives of millions of South Africans, from schoolchildren participating in school sport, communities sharing in the benefits of mass participation pro- grammes and events, and organisations benefiting from the SRSA’s financial and logistical support. Initiatives Golden Games The 2011 Golden Games, part of the SRSA’s Older Persons Programme, were held in the Free State in October 2011 with the theme Celebrating Active Ageing. The Golden Games is a national event where persons older than 65 compete in various sporting codes at provincial level. Codes that form part of the Golden Games include soccer, athletics (800 m and 4x100-m relay), brisk walk, duck walk, passing the ball, rugbyball throw, jukskei and goal shooting. The Western Cape was crowned the 2011 Golden Games champion. All-Africa Games The 10th All-Africa Games took place in September 2011 in Maputo, Mozambique, and featured 20 sporting disciplines in which 53 countries participated. Events for people with disabilities also featured in swimming and athletics. Team South Africa finished first on the medals table, with 62 gold medals, 55 silver and 40 bronze, totalling 157 medals.
