Baseball (21-8/3-4 SUNYAC) Apr. 19th vs. Cortland, W 4-1; L 6-8 SUNY Oneonta junior Dave Filak (Scotia/Burnt Hills) pitched a complete game striking out 14 Cortland batters in leading the host Red Dragons to a 4-1 win in game 1 of a doubleheader split with visiting Cortland last Monday in SUNYAC action. Filak scattered seven hits over the nine innings to pick up his fifth win of the season. The win in game 1 for Oneonta (also snapped a 10-game skid against its rivals dating back to Apr. 26 of 2006 when Oneonta defeated Cortland 3-1 in the second game of a doubleheader. Oneonta took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Cortland starting pitcher. Senior Scott Dubben (Roseboom/Cherry Valley-Springfield) singled up the middle to lead off the second inning for Oneonta. He went to second on a pass ball and advanced to third on a deep fly ball to center field by freshmanMike Mascari (Syracuse/Westhill). Senior Steve Gauck (Clifton Park/ Shenendehowa) lined the first pitch he saw into center field to drive in Dubben for the 1-0 lead. Oneonta would add a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Mike Center (Schenectady/Schenectady) got the inning started with a leadoff single before stealing second to move into scoring position. After a Dubben walk, Mascari moved both runners along with a bunt to put two runners in scoring position for Gauck, who delivered a single through the left side to score Center while moving Dubben to third. Dubben scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by the designated hitter, Pete Lindner (Voorheesville/Voorheesville). Oneonta’s fourth run of the game came from an RBI single by senior Carmine Caputo (Mahopac/Mahopac), who drove in pinch-runner, Devin Burch (Horseheads/Thomas A. Edison) from second base. Cortland’s lone run of game 1 came in the seventh inning. In game 2, the score was tied at 2-2 entering the top of the fourth where Cortland put four runs up on the board to take a 6-2 lead. The big blow of the inning was a two-out, three-run home run to deep center field. Oneonta came back with a pair of runs in its half of the fourth to cut its deficit to two runs. Freshman Mike DeCarr (Syracuse/Westhill) hit a one-out double down the left junior . A single to left field by Caputo chased Cortland’s starter from the game. Both Arcuri and Caputo advanced one base on a wild pitch before Arcuri scored on a ground out to second base by sophomore Kevin Knack (Ghent/ Ichabod Crane). Cortland scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-4 lead before Oneonta came back in the bottom of the inning with a single to trail 8-5 entering the eighth inning. Oneonta rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a run with one out on an RBI single by Dubben. The game ended with Cortland turning a 4-6-3 double play.

Apr. 21st vs. St. John Fisher, W 8-0; W 8-2 The SUNY Oneonta baseball team easily swept a doubleheader from visiting Utica College last Wednesday in non- conference action at Red Dragon Field. The Red Dragons won the Athletes first game 8-0 and followed with an 8-2 win in game 2 of the twin bill. After a goal by the Golden Eagles which tied the game at 2-2, Oneonta finished the quarter with a pair of goals in the final 1:22 to take a 4-2 lead after one period. The Golden Eagles turned the tables on Oneonta in the second period, scoring four goals while only allowing two goals to bring the score to even at halftime, 6-6. The third quarter was all Brockport as they put a five spot on the board to take an 11-7 lead at the end of the third period. Five different players scored for Brockport.
