national.ballet.ca 7 Synopsis By Alasdair Middleton

Act I In the forest a tree has been chopped down. Geppetto and his fellow Lumberjacks are unable to cut it until a Blue Fairy hands Geppetto a magic axe. The tree is split and a little wooden boy – Pinocchio – is revealed. The Lumberjacks are alarmed. The Blue Fairy entrusts the wooden boy to Geppetto’s care, telling Pinocchio that if he tries to be good, one day he might become a real boy.

A Schoolmistress is leading her pupils to class. Geppetto is eager for Pinocchio to learn. The Schoolmistress is doubtful – and Pinocchio has no book. The Blue Fairy magics one up. Pinocchio sets off to school. A Puppet Show arrives in town. Instead of going to school Pinocchio is distracted by the puppet show. He swaps his schoolbook for a ticket. The book flies away. At the Puppet Show Pinocchio causes a sensation. The Puppet Master rewards him with five gold coins.

A Cat and a Fox have noticed all this. They befriend Pinocchio and take him to the Lobster Bar. Lumberjacks and some illegal animals are enjoying a drink. Geppetto is desperately trying to find Pinocchio. The Cat and the Fox make sure he does not. When a Mountie enters the bar everybody scatters – leaving Pinocchio to pay the bill.

Pinocchio is lost in Assassin’s Wood. He ignores advice and warnings. The Cat and the Fox disguised as assassins attempt to rob him but are driven off by Magic Blue Birds.

Some Rabbits take Pinocchio to the Blue Fairy’s house. The Blue Fairy and Pinocchio are reunited but Pinocchio tells a lie. His nose grows. When Pinocchio promises to be truthful Magic Blue Birds peck it back to size. The Blue Fairy magically shows Pinocchio how Geppetto is searching for him everywhere. Pinocchio asks to go and find him. The Blue Fairy allows him on the condition he does not wander from the path.

In the Forest Pinocchio meets the Cat and the Fox. They lure him from the path, telling him he could be rich if he plants his money in the Field of Miracles where it will grow into a Money Tree. Pinocchio follows their advice and falls asleep, dreaming of wealth. The Cat and the Fox dig up the money and run away.

Pinocchio wakes up. There is no Money Tree and no money. The Blue Fairy urges Pinocchio to hurry to the seashore where Geppetto is setting out in a boat to look for him. A storm is brewing. Geppetto’s boat capsizes and Pinocchio leaps into the sea to save him but they cannot quite reach one another.

8 Act II Washed up on the shore Pinocchio resolves to try harder. He goes back to school but soon he and his fellow pupils are lured off to a place called Funland where no work is ever done. While having lots of fun Pinocchio and his fellow pupils are transformed into donkeys and are auctioned off to businessmen to toil on farms and in factories forever. With the help of some balloons Pinocchio manages to escape from Funland but tumbles into the sea where fish nibble off his donkey skin.

Pinocchio is swallowed by a whale. Inside the whale Pinocchio is reunited with Geppetto. And some other characters he has met on his travels.

Pinocchio has a brilliant idea! He gets everybody to help him build a raft from the various things that the whale has swallowed. They sail on the raft out of the whale and head home. Safe on dry land everybody is pleased to see Pinocchio and Geppetto. The Blue fairy arrives and casts a spell.

Pinocchio becomes a real boy.

quite a straight, if slightly sentimental morality tale, whereas Alasdair’s opera was closer to the original book. This time we have tried to meet somewhere in the middle!

JC: Any concern about Disney expectations?

WT: Disney’s take on the story is a kind of a cute moral journey and the book is not that. The book is much more a celebration of the anarchy and, to a degree, of the amorality of smaller children who haven’t quite sussed out the way moral codes function. Our characters and scenario are not as anarchic as Collodi’s original but we are going a Pinocchio is created by British choreographer little bit in that direction. and dancer Will Tuckett. Renowned for his inventive storytelling, Mr. Tuckett has received JC: And what about those who might show up acclaim for his many works including an Olivier looking for Jiminy Cricket and all the Disney Award for his masterful adaptation of The Wind favourites? In The Willows. Pinocchio is his first creation for The National Ballet of Canada. Arts Critic John WT: I think they’ll very quickly know it’s not Coulbourn caught up with him at The Walter Disney. In the book, Jiminy Cricket is killed very Carson Centre during a break from rehearsal unceremoniously by Pinocchio in the same chapter to ask some questions about his version of this that he is introduced. So, Alasdair and I decided classic tale. just to avoid crickets. We’re taking out a lot of the really dark sections of the original story as I think John Coulbourn: there’s a huge difference between the impact of Why Pinocchio? the written word and what happens when that is realized visually, but also we want to be closer Will Tuckett: to Collodi’s original than the Disney film. What I I think it’s an extraordinary book but it is at think we can do is make things exciting rather than times quite strange and surreal — not really scary. It’s just a few clicks a different way on the what anybody thinks it quite is. It’s actually the gauge and a slightly different application of the second Pinocchio I’ve created. Karen Kain initially pedal, but for a family show it’s really important wondered if I would revise that production, that it works for everyone. originally for House. However, I was going to have to redesign it, re-orchestrate it, JC: While you’re known as a major creative force upscale it and I made it a really long time ago, so in ballet, you also do a lot of work in theatre, I thought, couldn’t I just make a new one? Then, I opera and film. Do you have a favourite? could make it specifically for The National Ballet of Canada. The first one was a mix of contemporary WT: It’s always really nice “coming home” and classical dance and so making it for the to dancers. I like opera singers, actors and National Ballet is a whole other ball game. musicians, but I do really like dancers. I like the way they work and I guess that’s because I’ve We also, unusually for ballet, use elements of text been working in dance the longest. I like that in this production, spoken by some of the dancers. curious sort of osmosis in a studio where not Librettist and Dramaturge Alasdair Middleton everything is spoken — odd bits of telegraphing also created the libretto for an opera of Pinocchio and stuff. I like dancers as people; their work ethic that gets performed all over the world, so he also and their concentration. And I like their route into knows the story really well. My last production was roles — with actors, there’s that thing of learning

10 slowly, starting by talking about who this person is, creating an intellectual picture and then filling it, as opposed to a dancer where you can create a climbing frame of a character with movement and then watch a dancer fill it with themselves. It’s sort of the opposite approach — you end up with the same thing but it’s the other way around.

JC: And, by those lights, how do the National Ballet’s dancers stack up?

WT: They’re an amazing company. They do two things really, really well; there’s a really high technical level but for me, just as importantly, everybody understands how to tell stories. As curious as it may sound I think that is just as pertinent in abstract work. It makes total sense that there is a lot of crossover between here and . Both companies are aware of how to tell stories through dance, be that abstract, elliptically emotional narrative, or a more straightforwardly conceived story ballet and I think that’s quite rare. One might think that the National Ballet would have more in common with companies in the United States, but to me it actually feels much more European in its approach. What I love is that the dancers have a kind of bigger energy that’s very North American. It’s as if the National Ballet has all the good things — but with added punch. And the best thing of all is that everyone’s really nice!

JC: While this has always been a children’s story, Pinocchio seems to have been showing up in American politics a lot of late. Will this Pinocchio have any political overtones?

WT: We started on this over a year ago, when England was still determinedly part of Europe and the idea of Trump coming to power was, to many, ludicrous. The world felt in a very different place. I think it’s impossible to make something that doesn’t, in some way, reflect the time we are in but I don’t think people will be going to see Pinocchio hoping for a treatise on the global political situation. I hope people will be thinking that it will be great to go to the theatre and have an enjoyable evening where nobody is dictating what they should think. One of my least favourite words is “relevant” in terms of art. As soon as you’ve said that awful word, you watch the project get up and run off the table into the land of irrelevant. I think there will always be a place for and a desire to see theatre and dance as a way of escaping things for a couple of hours and to me there’s nothing wrong in that – let’s face it, the real world isn’t going anywhere.

Prepare. 26 “We have a company to be very proud of in The National Ballet of Canada, one that is bursting with talent and can stand up on any stage internationally. With your help, we have the opportunity to build on an extraordinary heritage of dance excellence and soar to even greater heights.”

— Karen Kain, C.C.

In November 2016, I was proud to announce the public launch of the Soaring Campaign, an endeavour to raise $ for The National Ballet of Canada as it continues on a remarkable trajectory of creative growth. Through Soaring, donors are helping Karen Kain to raise the company’s stature on the world stage with support for artistic excellence, new productions, touring, community engagement and the Endowment Foundation.

To date, Soaring has raised close to $80 million, with $28 million directed toward the $40 million goal for new productions. These funds have allowed Karen to commission the glorious new productions that define our recent history – high calibre ballets like Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Romeo and Juliet, The Winter’s Tale and Pinocchio that attract new audiences, challenge our artists and open doors to international touring.

As we move into another winter season shaped by exciting new work, I want to express our appreciation for the passionate individuals and groups who make it possible for the National Ballet to remain vital and innovative. To them and to all our generous partners in the Soaring Campaign, thank you for helping the National Ballet to soar.

The National Ballet of Canada thanks the donors who, inspired by Karen Kain’s bold vision, have given generously to the Soaring Campaign so far. Their leadership has sparked tremendous momentum and transformed the company immeasurably.

“The more I learn about dance and see how a ballet comes together, the more inspired I am. It means a lot to me to encourage the extraordinary creativity and vision that exist in The National Ballet of Canada right now, when we have such a remarkable opportunity to impact artistic growth. This is a company with the leadership, talent and reputation required to take creative risks. And if you don’t risk, you never get anywhere.”

With this exciting venture, The National Ballet of Canada has become the co-producer of choice world- wide and acclaimed as one of the world’s leading ballet companies.
