St. Bartholomew Church 4949 W St. Bartholomew Church 4949 W. Patterson Ave. Chicago, Illinois 60641 773-286-7871 www.stbartholomew.net ST. BART’S PARISH MISSION STATEMENT St. Bartholomew Parish is a faith-filled people, guided by the Holy Spirit and the Gospel, striving to hear and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to all… to CELEBRATE together because the Lord is in our midst and dwelling within us. to CARE about each other, sharing our joys and sorrows. to GROW in awareness of Jesus, alive and active in our lives. to INVITE everyone to share in one another’s goodness, talents, hopes and visions. The people of God at St. Bartholomew REACH OUT to all because we need each other. Padre Ric PASTOR’S NOTES Page 3 There are different traditions in the many parts of the world with just about any celebration and all that involves certain highlights pertaining to the identity and personality of the whole community’s life and vitality. But there is one common denominator of any community’s attitude towards life, and that is, the wellbeing of it. When we say “wellbeing” it is always mistakenly misunderstood by many of us. It may simply mean that everything is okay, that there are no problems or conflicts, that I enjoy a good life, have enough money and that there are no health problems. When we start looking deeper into the “real meaning” of wellbeing in a deeper sense to the core of its semantics, might mean other than being comfortable and cozy. It takes us to the full realization of a whole state of mind, spirit and soul, (not excluding body). It may mean that even though, I don’t have enough money for the “holidays” (we should say Holy Days), I am well, because God has given me life (an immense world of opportunities) in the spirit and optimism about the different challenges that I face in life, and I still am well. I have been given by God a spirit and mind. Above all, God has given me a heart to open my eyes to the faith and live the message of great hope for me and others. Personal convictions of faith transfer and carry our motives to a greater reality in manifestation of the life of faith of a whole community, and that is exactly what we celebrate and prepare for in the spirit. This time of Advent that we have begun makes us realize that time goes fast and flies away. This is only our Second Sunday of Advent and we still prepare to celebrate once again, the great event that Christians do best, (of course, besides Easter) Christmas! It is a wonderful time of memories and new experiences to add to those events of the past while still fully understanding the real meaning of this Holy Season. Christmas is only two weeks away, and we still question ourselves if there is going to be snow, slushy snow, or cold and windy with dry snow. In the first Reading from the Book Baruch, God speaks to His people. God reminds Israel about the hope that they are to live as God’s people, letting them know that their relationship with Him would change greatly in an unimaginable way so as to tighten their belts in the discipline of compassion, love, care and loyalty to God’s laws in their hearts, not only simply by observing them for the sake of complying with “the Law” given to them. This same theme of the great power of love and compassion, forgiveness and appreciation of God over Israel carries out its voice into the heart of St. Paul as he greets the people from Philippi. Obviously the response of this community to the message of St. Paul and his leadership was so great that St. Paul effusively manifests his joy with open heart in gratitude for their faithfulness. In the Gospel of St. Luke, even though I have difficulty with history (because of all the dates, names, events, and so on), we find so much history packed together for us in order to timeline our minds and wrap our thoughts around such a great event of John the Baptist making a presence calling people back to God’s mercy with overwhelming spirit of jubilation. It is so for us. Well, it should be as well for us, because we are celebrating a great tide of joy to accentuate God’s reassurance for our efforts to keep this world in line with God’s grace. It is a time that we can still prepare once again to receive at last the great crown of humanity in the tender presence of the Baby Jesus, the Son of God. God definitely gives us many opportunities to deepen our faith and test our love for Him as we share that same love with one another. It is in the manner of respect, dignity and care for one another that we are called to live His message. Christmas is not a remote 2000 year old concept, but it is a real time treasure in the seasons we experience. Gifts are part of it.

Five popular plants and flowers for Christmas Posted by TBN_Admin On 12/17/2014 By: P K Martin The Christmas holiday is a time of beauty and cheerfulness and nothing symbolizes these two qualities as well as flowers. Several Christmas flowers and plants are available today which can be sent out to your loved ones to wish them "Merry X-Mas!" in a traditional and different style. Of course you can use all the latest technologies for sending out wishes within a few minutes, but for people you care the most there's no better way to show your love and care except Christmas flowers. So in this article we try to take a look at 5 such plants and flowers: Poinsettia: This is perhaps the most recognizable flower of Christmas. Originally they're green and bright red leaves but today they're sold in several patterns and colors. Originally they grow either in white, pink or red color, but today florists dye them in different colors and even add sparkles for making them more visually compelling. Amaryllis: Another popular Christmas plant is Amaryllis. This tall, graceful and beautiful flower bulb with its huge trumpet like flowers looks like a beautiful centerpiece for the table. Its beauty seems harking the Christmas holidays. Basically the red varieties of this flower are sold for holidays; but they come in several different colors from red to white to pink to orange and also in a wide variety of patterns like solid, stripped or speckled. Christmas Cactus: This is my favorite plant for Christmas.

  • Poinsettias at Home on a Number of Continents
Poinsettias at home on a number of continents Origin: Central and South America. Its international popularity means that it is now an established part of the Christmas decorations in nu- merous other countries. Not only that: this attractive winter bloomer is one of the most popular indoor plants throughout the world, with enthusiasts in countries as widespread as Egypt, Australia, China, In- dia, Japan, Korea, South Africa, Taiwan and Turkey, and the numbers are growing. Whether it is known as the 'Christ Star' or 'Ataturk's Flower', whether at Chinese New Year or the Jewish Festival of Lights, no other plant bridges the divide between people, cultures and traditions across the continents in the way that the poinsettia does. In its home country Mexico The poinsettia is called 'La Flor de Nochebuena'—the Christmas Eve Flower—it has been directly as- sociated with Christmas since the 16th century. Its international role as a Christmas plant began in the early 20th century, and on illustrious ground: Los Angeles' Hollywood Boulevard, no less, where he began to sell poinsettia stems successfully as 'Christmas flowers' there was a German immigrant family called Ecke. In the 1950s it also became possible to cultivate poinsettias as indoor plants. This paved the way for people in numerous other countries. Whether it was known as the 'Adventsstern', 'Christmas Star' or 'Stella di Natale', the plant rapidly became part of households throughout Europe. In Europe, The poinsettia is an established feature of the Christmas tradition. With its star-shaped leaves and tradi- tional red and green colouring it is the ideal symbol of the season.
