Ce livre de 320 pages, format 19 x 23 cm, – le troisième traite des bovins du Nord Ouest de la France et la relié cartonné, est le fruit du travail du Professeur Bernard Denis, race primaire Batave. On y trouve le groupe hollando-flamand, docteur-vétérinaire, membre de l’Académie d’Agriculture et les dérivés du Durham, la race Normande ; Président de la Société d’ethnozootechnie, et de la collaboration – Le quatrième traite de l’ensemble des bovins jurassiques et appa - avec Laurent Avon, spécialiste de la conservation des races, chef rentés à la race primaire jurassique. On y trouve le groupe juras - de projet à l’Institut de l’Élevage de 1977 à 2009. 2009 By Harlan Ritchie BREEDS OF BEEF AND MULTI-PURPOSE CATTLE ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The inspiration for writing this book goes back to my undergraduate student days at Iowa State University when I enrolled in the course, “Breeds of Livestock,” taught by the late Dr. Roy Kottman, who was then the Associate Dean of Agriculture for Undergraduate Instruction. I was also inspired by my livestock judging team coach, Professor James Kiser, who took us to many great livestock breeders’ farms for practice judging workouts. I also wish to acknowledge the late Dr. Ronald H. Nelson, former Chairman of the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University. Dr. Nelson offered me an Instructorship position in 1957 to pursue an advanced degree as well as teach a number of undergraduate courses, including “Breeds of Livestock.” I enjoyed my work so much that I never left, and remained at Michigan State for my entire 47-year career in Animal Science. During this career, I had an opportunity to judge shows involving a significant number of the breeds of cattle reviewed in this book. I wish to acknowledge the various associations who invited me to judge their shows and become acquainted with their breeders. Furthermore, I want to express thanks to my spouse, Dr. Leah Cox Ritchie, for her patience while working on this book, and to Ms. Nancy Perkins for her expertise in typing the original manuscript. NOUVELLE- MAI 2021 N°19 AQUITAINE RACES BOVINES EN NOUVELLE-AQUITAINE Des races locales solidement implantées Parmi les nombreuses races bovines présentes en Nouvelle-Aquitaine, quatre d’entre elles, la Limousine, la Blonde d’Aquitaine, la Prim’Holstein et la Charolaise constituent la majorité du cheptel régional de vaches. Neuf sur dix en Nouvelle-Aquitaine appartiennent à l’une de ces quatre races, et une sur deux est de race Limousine. Par ailleurs, près des deux tiers des vaches sont d’une race à viande. Les élevages néo-aquitains comptent au total 55 races différentes fin 2019, 60 % ayant un effectif supérieur à 100 vaches. La Nouvelle-Aquitaine est le berceau de plusieurs races : Limousine, Blonde d’Aquitaine, mais également Parthenaise et Bazadaise. En lien avec les dynamiques de production du territoire, la diversité des races bovines évolue de manière divergente au cours des vingt dernières années. Des races implantées par Figure 1 bassin de production en Répartition de l’effectif de vaches de type lait dans les exploitations allaitant agricoles fin 2019 Pour les races allaitantes, deux Haute-Vienne Vienne bassins principaux sont présents dans Deux-Sèvres Pyrénées-Atlantiques la région : l’un sur l’est avec une forte Lot-et-Garonne proportion de vaches Limousine, et Landes Gironde Montbéliarde l’autre, au sud, structuré autour de Dordogne Normande Prim’Holstein Creuse Autre la race Blonde d’Aquitaine. Sur les Corrèze autres départements de la région, Charente-Maritime Charente on rencontre un panel plus varié de 0 10 000 20 000 30 000 40 000 races bovines au sein des élevages. -
