Northeast England – a History of Flash Flooding
Northeast England – A history of flash flooding Introduction The main outcome of this review is a description of the extent of flooding during the major flash floods that have occurred over the period from the mid seventeenth century mainly from intense rainfall (many major storms with high totals but prolonged rainfall or thaw of melting snow have been omitted). This is presented as a flood chronicle with a summary description of each event. Sources of Information Descriptive information is contained in newspaper reports, diaries and further back in time, from Quarter Sessions bridge accounts and ecclesiastical records. The initial source for this study has been from Land of Singing Waters –Rivers and Great floods of Northumbria by the author of this chronology. This is supplemented by material from a card index set up during the research for Land of Singing Waters but which was not used in the book. The information in this book has in turn been taken from a variety of sources including newspaper accounts. A further search through newspaper records has been carried out using the British Newspaper Archive. This is a searchable archive with respect to key words where all occurrences of these words can be viewed. The search can be restricted by newspaper, by county, by region or for the whole of the UK. The search can also be restricted by decade, year and month. The full newspaper archive for northeast England has been searched year by year for occurrences of the words ‘flood’ and ‘thunder’. It was considered that occurrences of these words would identify any floods which might result from heavy rainfall. -

Also the "CEGB story' booklet is up on an AboutBlyth site and Glyn England's musings from 1982 (view from my Window) are on a South Western historical electricity site. Plus the main Electricity timeline document produced by the Electricity Council in 1987, Rob Cochrane's book Power to the People and various other sources. Looking at the current difficult situation we appear to be in, I've been digging around how Electricity delivery has progressed in GB. I thought you find this interesting..... There is a salutory lesson re excess capacity which really held us back until 1933, albeit at that time also with serious supply type diversity. Following on from Michael Faraday’s experiments, James Clerk Maxwell wrote his treatise on Electricity and Magnetism which was a bit hard to follow. However John Ambrose Fleming, the one student who sat through all of Clerk Maxwell’s lectures realised what was needed and came up with the Right Hand (Generation) and Left hand (Motor) rules. Motion at Right angles to Magnetic field with Electric field at 90 degrees to both. Hence the development of Dynamos (DC), Alternators (AC) and Motors (DC and AC) Much new Electricity Generation and Supply equipment was on show at the 1881 Paris Electrical Exposition and 1882 Crystal Palace Exhibition. Edison had by far the largest exhibit in Paris (including 'Jumbo' the 125hp monster generator). Edison and Swan displayed the new incandescent lamp. This engendered a number of projects which really kick started the Electricity revolution. -

The various independent full scale wave and tidal sites are described together with nursery and scale sites. A description is also given of test sites which device developers have created in order to test their own devices. All the sites are described in terms of scale of devices tested, resource and met-ocean conditions, infrastructure and services available, licensing and permitting issues as well as the rationale behind the selection of the location of each site. Finally the importance of the spectral shape of the seaway at wave energy test sites is discussed as well as the role of test centres in the development schedule of wave and tidal devices. Industrial Heritage - Utilities - Gas Education Teacher’s Kit A History of the Gas Industry Lighting up the Nation The development of gas lighting in the nineteenth century had a dramatic impact on the domestic and working lives of the people of Britain. Gas lighting was a far more efficient and economic form of lighting than oil lighting that preceded it. Subsequently gas was used for other purposes such as cooking and heating. The ability to derive gas by the heating of coal was discovered in the seventeenth century. The Scottish engineer, William Murdoch, was the first person to demonstrate the practical application of this discovery when, in 1792, he lit his house in Redruth, Cornwall, using gas produced in an iron retort. The first buildings to be lit by gas were a number of textile mills in northern England, around 1806. Early gas works were small, private concerns built at factories, mines, railway stations, and country houses. The world’s first public gas works opened in Great Peter Street, London in 1813. By 1826 almost every city and large town in Britain had a gas works, primarily for lighting the streets. In these towns, public buildings, shops and larger houses generally had gas lighting but it was not until the last quarter of the nineteenth century that most working people could afford to light their homes with gas. The gas industry in Britain was nationalised in 1948 and then privatised in 1986. Natural gas replaced coal gas in the 1960s and 70s. Gas has become a major world-wide industry and now provides over 40% of the United Kingdom’s energy. -
