After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way. -

Citations in Classics and Ancient History The most common style in use in the field of Classical Studies is the author-date style, also known as Chicago 2, but MLA is also quite common and perfectly acceptable. Quick guides for each of MLA and Chicago 2 are readily available as PDF downloads. The Chicago Manual of Style Online offers a guide on their web-page: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html The Modern Language Association (MLA) does not, but many educational institutions post an MLA guide for free access. While a specific citation style should be followed carefully, none take into account the specific practices of Classical Studies. They are all (Chicago, MLA and others) perfectly suitable for citing most resources, but should not be followed for citing ancient Greek and Latin primary source material, including primary sources in translation. Citing Primary Sources: Every ancient text has its own unique system for locating content by numbers. For example, Homer's Iliad is divided into 24 Books (what we might now call chapters) and the lines of each Book are numbered from line 1. Herodotus' Histories is divided into nine Books and each of these Books is divided into Chapters and each chapter into line numbers. The purpose of such a system is that the Iliad, or any primary source, can be cited in any language and from any publication and always refer to the same passage. That is why we do not cite Herodotus page 66. Page 66 in what publication, in what edition? Very early in your textbook, Apodexis Historia, a passage from Herodotus is reproduced. -

This impressive piece of historical research is divided into three main parts. In a preliminary section Alexandre first gives a brief survey of the study of the transmission of the corpus Philonicum in modern scholarship and announces the theme of her article, namely to present some reflections on the Latin titles now in general use in Philonic scholarship. In the first part of the article she shows how the replacement of Greek titles by Latin ones is part of the humanist tradition, and is illustrated by the history of Philonic editions from Turnebus to Arnaldez– Pouilloux–Mondésert. She then goes on in the second part to examine the Latin tradition of Philo’s reception in antiquity (Jerome, Rufinus, the Old Latin translation) in order to see whether the titles transmitted by it were influential in determining the Latin titles used in the editions. This appears to have hardly been the case. In the third part the titles now in use are analysed. Most of them were invented by the humanists of the Renaissance and the succeeding period; only a few are the work of philologists of the th century. -

Tetrarchic principles, envisaged by Diocletian, were specifically put in place to supersede and override blood kinship. Constantine’s accession to power started as a military coup in which a military unit composed of barbarian soldiers seems to have played an impor- tant role. On the same day, a new Emperor was made – his eldest son Constantine who had been present at his father’s deathbed. What exactly happened on that day? Britain, a remote province (actually several provinces)1 on the edge of the Roman Empire, had a tendency to defect from the central government. It produced several usurpers in the past.2 Was Constantine one of them? What gave him the right to be an Emperor in the first place? It can be argued that the political system that was still valid in 306, today known as the Tetrarchy, made any such seizure of power illegal. -

This preface reveals that the Anabasis can be read as a work about Arrian's own personal identity. Arrian's biographical history allows us to speculate that his identity was in flux throughout his life. By understanding the Anabasis as Arrian's way to claim to be a Greek, we can better interpret his characterization of Alexander. © Kyle Lakin. [email protected] Lakin 2 Arrian the Personal Historian In his Anabasis, Arrian claims his work about Alexander as a peculiarly personal triumph for a historian. He does not claim it to be a defining work for all mankind but rather to fulfill a personal goal that he has held since childhood. …a)ll0 e)kei~no a0nagra&fw, o3ti e0moi\ patri&j te kai\ ge&noj kai\ a0rxai\ oi#de oi( lo&goi ei)si& te kai\ a0po\ ne&ou e!ti e)ge0nonto. (I.12.5) ...But I write this because these words are country, family, and offices and have been since I was a child. Arrian claims that oi#de oi( lo&goi has been a work connected to his personal life unlike any other. Much discussion over the meaning of oi#de oi( lo&goi has shown that its interpretation depends mostly upon the view that an individual scholar holds concerning Arrian’s trustworthiness. It has been interpreted as everything from “this history” to “these writings” to “writing history” in an abstract sense.1 But the interpretation of this passage is crucial to our interpretation of the work, for if Arrian’s history was intensely personal, then this raises questions about his historiographical aims and method. -

B.R. Burton "The first to plead his case seems just, until another comes and examines him." Proverbs 18:17 Anti-missionaries love the pagan "parallel" argument. Despite rebuttals to the concept, the lingering idea never seems to die. What's more astounding is that "anti-missionaries" do not apply the same rules to themselves, as they do others, which, in most cases, is not surprising at all. One of the most famous "parallels" is in the virginal conception and birth of the Messiah. What the "anti-missionaries" do not take into account, nor mention, is the pagan parallels in the Tanakh, and even more specifically the birth of Moshe himself! As this pagan document states, Sargon, the great king of Akkad, am I. Of my father I know only his name.... Otherwise I know nothing of him. My father's brother lived in the mountains. My mother was a priestess whom no man should have known. She brought me into the world secretly.... She took a basket of reeds, placed me inside it, covered it with pitch and placed me in the River Euphrates. And the river, without which the land cannot live, carried me through part of my future kingdom. The river did not rise over me, but carried me high and bore me along to Akki who fetched water to irrigate the fields. Akki made a gardener of me. In the garden that I cultivated, Inanna (the great goddess) saw me. She took me to Kish to the court of King Urzabala. There I called myself Sargon, that is, the rightful king.1 Stephen Van Eck notes the similarities of, "Being placed in a basket sealed with pitch and set adrift on a river is the story of Sargon of Akkad, the first regional conqueror, who had lived more than a thousand years before Moses. -

MOBILIZING MUSLIM RELIGIOUS LEADERS FOR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND FAMILY PLANNING AT THE COMMUNITY LEVEL Mobilizing Muslim Religious Leaders for Reproductive Health and Family Planning at the Community Level: A Training Manual 2 Acknowledgements Mobilizing Muslim Religious Leaders for Reproductive Health and Family Planning at the Community Level: A Training Manual is the product of several individuals at Extending Service Delivery (ESD) project. ESD would like to thank the key authors of this manual including Jennifer Mason, Leah Sawalha Freij, Pauline Muhuhu, Cate Lane, and Elsa Berhane. Jennifer Mason drafted the first version of this manual based on Pathfinder’s training manual Training Islamiyya School Teachers in Reproductive Health . Leah Freij mainstreamed gender into the manual and synthesized the various Islamic interpretations related to reproductive health/family planning and gender relations. Cate Lane developed the youth and leadership sections. Pauline Muhuhu consolidated the final draft of this manuscript into its existing form. Elsa Berhane oversaw the entire process including the write up of the overview and introduction, updating the various versions of the manual, coordinating all contributions and responding to USAID’s recommendations. This manuscript would not have been possible without the help of Tayseer Abdel-Razig who ensured that Islamic interpretations were accurate, provide the team with most appropriate ahadiths (sayings of the Prophet) and Qur’anic verses. ESD also recognizes the role of Cathy Solter and Mustafa Kudrati for their reviews of the early drafts. This manual originated from a training course developed in Arabic by Nasser Mahmoud El Kholy for religious leaders in Egypt under the CATALYST project and in Yemen under Basic Health Services Project.
