    Metafeminism and Post-9/11 Writing in Canada and Québec Marie Carrière Writing After 9/11 hile some Canadians were on board the American and United Airline flights that crashed into the World Trade Centre, several others were inside its Twin Towers that Wfateful morning of 11 September 2001. As Kent Roach has argued, “the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States had immediate con- sequences for Canada” and its citizens (3). Significant geographical and cultural connections have always linked Canada to the United States’ fate; perhaps this is true now more than ever in the face of terrorist threats and especially US political and international responses ensu- ing from 9/11. If anything, the recently ousted Conservative govern- ment of Canada aggressively reminded us of this tie. Its surveillance and information-sharing initiative law, Bill C-36, was assented to in 2014. Its new sister anti-terrorist act, Bill C-51, was passed in October 2014, assented to in June 2015, and has been under court challenge by Canadian Journalists for Free Expression and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. Beyond the strictly political realm, 9/11 and its aftermath have also affected Canadian writers and artists. “We’ve always been close, you and us,” writes Margaret Atwood in her 2004 “Letter to America”: “History, that old entangler, has twisted us together since the early seventeenth century. As for us, you’re our biggest trading partner: We know perfectly well that if you go down the plughole, we’re going with you. We have every reason to wish you well” (325-26).

    Margaret Atwood’s Feminist Ethics of Gracious Housewifery Tammy Amiel Houser The Open University, Israel Margaret Atwood’s oeuvre has often been acclaimed for its complex representation of social, political, national, and environmental issues. Critics have frequently commented on Atwood’s engagement, in her genre-crossing and multilayered writing, with power relations, mainly those that establish sexual and gender hierarchies and trap women in victimizing practices.1 However, some of Atwood’s fictional texts suggest more than just a critical reflection on the negative aspects of such contemporary power relations. In this essay I argue that a positive ethical vision of hospital- ity emerges in recent Atwood texts. Focusing on her novel The Blind Assassin (2000) and her short story “The Art of Cooking and Serving” (2006), I point to a dialogue between Atwood’s literary treatment of hos- pitality and the philosophical idea of hospitality suggested by Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida. This correlation need not indicate a di- rect influence, but Levinas’s and Derrida’s works offer a theoretical way for exploring Atwood’s complex ethical vision of gracious hospitality. Atwood, however, deals with the ethics of hospitality from a feminist perspective and through female protagonists, in narratives that contest women’s role as hostesses and critique the self-sacrifice that women’s caretaking obligations entail. Therefore, Atwood’s fiction may also pro- vide an indirect comment on Levinas’s and Derrida’s ideas of radical hospitality. Atwood rewrites the feminine myth of gracious housewifery in sev- eral ways, both disrupting the stereotypical association between women and selfless giving and signifying an ethics of nurturance and generos- ity.

    SECTION: LANGUAGE AND DISCOURSE LDMD 2 “I HAD CERTAINLY FOUND MY TRADITION”: MARGARET ATWOOD AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF CANADIAN IDENTITY Adela Livia Catană, PhD Student, University of Bucharest Abstract: Margaret Atwood is a worldwide successful writer as well as a Canadian celebrity who promotes her national identity or helps her fellow artists. However, her ascension has not been an easy one. Growing up in the 1950s, she had to face a society full of prejudices regarding women interested in literature. Moreover, Canadians were still in a deep-frozen colonialism making barely visible efforts in constructing their self-consciousness and specific culture. Atwood had to discover the Canadian tradition on her own, process its elements and themes and apply them in her writings. She identified the idea of Survival as a unifying symbol similar to the American Frontier or the British Island. She praised the communion between people and nature due to her own experience in the Bush but also revealed the Canadian victim complex and the female experience living in a patriarchal society. Finally, Atwood used her voice not only to construct a Canadian literary identity but also sound a warning signal regarding important contemporary problems such as human rights and environmental degradation, failed scientific experiments, pandemics, totalitarianism, fanaticism and wars.     Shakespeare our contemporary in 2016: Margaret Atwood’s rewriting of The Tempest in Hag-Seed Sofía Muñoz-Valdivieso Universidad de Málaga, Spain ABSTRACT Margaret Atwood’s novel Hag-Seed (2016) is a retelling of The Tempest that transfers the actions from the magic island of the original play to present- day Canada: the avant-garde artistic director of a Shakespearean Festival is ousted from his job by his more world-savvy deputy, lives in isolation for twelve years and plots his revenge, which will involve a staging of The Tempest at the local prison where he has been teaching for some time as Mr Duke. Hag-Seed is part of a larger project of fictional retellings of the Bard’s plays conceived by Hogarth Press for the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of his death, a moment when Shakespeare’s cultural capital seems to be circulating more energetically than ever. The present article analyses Hag-Seed as a neo-Shakespearean novel that is original in the double sense of the term that Atwood’s teacher Northrop Frye so frequently remarked: imaginative, innovative, and inventive but also true to its fountain and origins.
