Letter to Prime Minister Trudeau Re Radioactive Waste Policy
The Right Honourable Justin Trudeau September 19 2017 Prime Minister of Canada Dear Prime Minister Trudeau: Canada is at the dawn of a new era: the Age of Nuclear Waste. Yet this country has no official policy regarding the long-term management of any radioactive wastes other than irradiated nuclear fuel. A federal policy on radioactive wastes other than irradiated fuel is urgently needed. The absence of such a policy in effect gives a green light for the approval of three ill-considered projects to abandon long-lived radioactive wastes at sites very close to major bodies of water – wastes that will remain hazardous for hundreds of thousands of years. One is a gigantic multi- story mound, on the surface at Chalk River, one kilometre from the Ottawa River, meant to permanently house up to a million cubic metres of mixed radioactive wastes. The other two projects involve the in-situ abandonment of the long-lived radioactive remains from two defunct nuclear reactors – the NPD reactor at Rolphton on the Ottawa River, and the WR-1 reactor at Pinawa on the Winnipeg River. These projects pose a threat to future generations, and they set a dreadful example for other countries looking to Canada for socially and environmentally acceptable policies and practices. All three projects involve radioactive wastes that are the sole responsibility of the government of Canada; yet in each case, the projects have been conceived by a private consortium of multinational corporations hired by the previous federal government under a time-limited contract. The previous government also ensured that the approvals process for all three projects is entirely in the hands of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), a body whose independence has been challenged from many quarters. -
E-Mail to Michel A. Duguay, Full Professor, Université Laval
Response, December 22, 2010 e-DOC: 3653567 ccmMercury: 2010-000690 E-mail to Michel A. Duguay, Full Professor, Université Laval Dear Dr. Duguay: I am writing in reference to your letter of December 6, 2010, which was sent by e-mail to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) President Michael Binder and to Greg Rzentkowski, a Director General with the CNSC. Your letter concerns the ongoing public hearing pertaining to the Hydro-Québec application to renew its operating licence for the Gentilly-2 nuclear generating station in Bécancour, Quebec. Mr. Binder has asked me to answer your letter in my capacity as Commission Secretary. First of all., let me confirm that the Commission Members who have been asked to rule on Hydro-Québec’s application have received a copy of your letter. However, only the submissions by Hydro-Québec and by CNSC personnel were considered on December 10, which was the first day of the hearing (Hearing Day 1). As specified in the Notice of Public Hearing (enclosed), interventions from members of the public will be heard in Hearing Day 2, which will be held on April 13 and 14, 2011, in Bécancour. As you know, CNSC hearings are held on two separate days several months apart. Members of the public therefore have an opportunity to observe the presentations made by the licence holder and CNSC staff during Day 1, as well as the questions asked by the Commission Members. Interested members of the public can obtain a transcript or view a Webcast of the Day 1 proceedings and thus have more time and information with which to prepare their own submissions and presentations for Hearing Day 2. -

July 1, 1867 Quebec Becomes a Province
July 1, 1867 Quebec Becomes a Province Quebec was one of the four original provinces of the Dominion of Canada, and is the largest province of Canada. Quebec has had a very strong French influence throughout its history. Its rapid industrial growth is partly due to the many rivers located there. Quebec ranks first as a producer of hydroelectric power in North America. The first permanent European settlement in Canada was in Quebec, along the St. Lawrence River. There are many attractions in Quebec for tourists, including historical and art museums, along with outdoor attractions such as hiking, skiing, and canoeing. Music and art festivals are also very popular. A few of the many famous people from Quebec include Myriam Bedard, Joseph-Armand Bombardier, Maurice "Rocket" Richard, Jacques Villeneuve, Patrick Roy, Mario Lemieux, and Marc Garneau. Look at the map of Quebec below. Label the capital of Quebec. Locate the cities of Salluit, Fort Rupert, Caniapiscau, Chibougamau, Forestville, Havre-St.-Pierre, Lac-Cayamant, Aylmer, Hull, St. Pascal, Drummondville, Montmagny, Aguanish, Kuujjuarapik, Verdun, Ste-Anne-du-Lac, and Gatineau. and label them on the map. Now label Mount Iberville, Mount Tremblant, Mount Royal, the Sutton Mountains, the Monteregians, the Laurentian Mountains, and the Canadian Shield. Also, locate the Saguenay River, St. Maurice River, Ottawa River, Chaudière River, Richelieu River, St. Francis River, St. Lawrence River, Montmorency River, Lake Sakami, Lake Eau Claire, Lake Hutte Sauvage, Lake Magpie, Lake St.-Jean, Lake Naococane, and Lake Pletipe, and label them. Lastly, label the provinces, states, or bodies of water that border Quebec. When you have finished, move on to the timeline of Quebec history on the next page and the research prompts that follow. -
