  • Ming-Qing Transition
Ming-Qing Transition In the mid-17th century, the Manchus, originating from today’s northeastern China, crossed the Great Wall and defeated the Ming and other competing forces. While resistance to the invaders lasted for decades, the Manchu- founded Qing dynasty eventually consolidated its rule over the entirety of China. Kangxi was the second emperor of the Qing dynasty after the Manchus moved their capital to Beijing. He was born in 1654 and enthroned at age of seven. He ruled China for 61 years, making him the longest-reigning emperor in Chinese history. 1 Early Career Before Kangxi was enthroned, the court was administered by four courtiers, Sonin, Suksaha, Ebilun, and Oboi. Kangxi ruled only in name. As a teenager, Kangxi eliminated these powerful courtiers and centralized power in his own hands. The arrest of Oboi took place in the audience chamber, where young wrestlers jumped upon the minister from their hiding place behind the throne, subduing him. Political and Military Achievements Kangxi was soon confronted by the challenge posed by three vassal kings in Southern China. The three kings, Wu Sangui of Yunnan, Shang Kexi of Guangdong, and Geng Jimao of Fujian, had previously assisted the Manchu army in their conquest of China. Since 1673, however, Kangxi had taken measures to deprive the three kings of their military capabilities, prompting Wu Sangui to rebel. This started the civil war known as the “Revolt of the Three Feudatories”. Kangxi’s military genius and political skills helped him to triumph over Wu. In 1681, the Qing army entered the capital city of Yunnan, ending the war against the rebels.

  • Internal Conflicts and the Political Control Over Bureaucracy in The
Meritocracy or Patronage? Internal Conflicts and the Political Control Over Bureaucracy in the Imperial China 1644-1911 Tianyang Xi¤ Abstract The quality of state bureaucrats is often key for maintaining social stability. This paper ana- lyzes the political mechanism of control over governors in the Qing dynasty. The ethnicity-based patronage favored Manchus within the central government, yet the majority Han officials were instrumental for maintaining social stability. We find that sanctions and promotions for gover- nors were responsive to internal conflicts within their jurisdictions. Moreover, new appointments tended to be drawn from the majority group when there were more internal conflicts nationwide. This pattern of control over bureaucracy suggests a competence-versus-loyalty trade-off, which is echoed by the history of contemporary China. ¤Assistant Professor, the National School of Development, Peking University. Democracies and dictatorships face similar problems of appointing competent officials and replacing those who fail to do their jobs properly. Moreover, no ruler can rule single-handedly: delegation is inevitable. Even when political power is monopolized, as in the case of the majority of regimes in human history, political elites may need to reach outside their own group to govern effectively.

  • Autocratic Rule and Social Capital
AUTOCRATIC RULEAND SOCIAL CAPITAL:EVIDENCE FROM IMPERIAL CHINA* Melanie Meng Xue§ and Mark Koyama‡ December 7, 2016 Abstract: This paper studies the consequences of autocratic rule for social capital in the context of imperial China. Between 1660–1788, individuals were persecuted if they were suspected of subversive attitudes towards the autocratic ruler. Using a difference-in-differences approach, our main finding is that these persecutions led to an average decline of 38% in the number of charitable organizations in each subsequent decade. To investigate the long-run effect of persecutions, we examine the impact that they had on the provision of local public goods. During this period, local public goods, such as basic education, relied primarily on voluntary contributions and local cooperation. We show that persecutions are associated with lower provision of basic education suggesting that they permanently reduced social capital. This is consistent with what we find in modern survey data: persecutions left a legacy of mistrust and political apathy. Mark C. Elliott Jonathan Schlesinger! The Qing Invention of Nature: Environment and Identity in Northeast China and Mongolia, 1750-1850 Abstract This dissertation studies the nexus of empire, environment, and market that defined Qing China in 1750-1850, when unprecedented commercial expansion and a rush for natural resources – including furs, pharmaceuticals, and precious minerals – transformed the ecology of China and its borderlands. That boom, no less than today’s, had profound institutional, ideological, and environmental causes and consequences. Nature itself was redefined. In this thesis, I show that it was the activism, not the atavism, of early modern empire that produced “nature.” Wilderness as such was not a state of nature: it reflected the nature of the state. Imperial efforts to elaborate and preserve “pure” ethnic homelands during the boom were at the center of this process. Using archival materials from Northeast China and Mongolia as case studies, the dissertation reassesses the view that homesteaders transformed China’s frontiers from wilderness to breadbasket after 1850.

  • Bubujingxin, Il Viaggio Spazio-Tempo Nella Letteratura Online Cinese
    Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Interpretariato e Traduzione Editoriale, Settoriale Tesi di Laurea Bubujingxin, il viaggio spazio-tempo nella letteratura online cinese Traduzione e commento del romanzo di Tong Hua Relatore Ch. Prof.ssa Federica PASSI Laureanda Lucia VASSALLI Matricola 847876 Anno Accademico 2017/2018 I III INDICE 引言…………………………………………………………………… p. • All the Emperor's Men? Conflicts and Power-Sharing in Imperial China
All the Emperor's Men? Conflicts and Power-sharing in Imperial China Tianyang Xi ∗ National School of Development Peking University August 2018 Abstract Autocracies often rely on power-sharing to maintain political survival. The literature, however, does not provide an adequate explanation for why autocratic regimes differ in the capability to enforce power-sharing. Drawing on the case of imperial China in the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), this paper argues that institutionalized bureaucratic system may be an arguably credible mechanism for facilitating power-sharing. Examining the pattern of bureaucratic turnovers in the Qing period shows that the sanctions and promotions for provincial governors were significantly affected by the level of internal armed conflicts. Favoritism was granted to Manchus, the ruling minority group, for the promotion toward the top level. With the presence of armed conflicts at the province level, however, the rulers were induced to select Han elites from the majority group, as governors. These results are consistent with the logic of power-sharing by virtue of a loyalty-versus-competence trade-off in bureaucratic selections. ∗[email protected] Assistant Professor, National School of Development, Peking University.
