Galvan 1 Alyssa Galvan Dr. Warner Engl 112B 26 November 2013 Bullying in Contemporary Realistic Fiction All too often, stories appear in the news that another young person has died because of being bullied. Young adults are extremely fragile and impressionable, easily influenced by everything they see and hear, and it does not take much for them to believe that something has ruined their lives past the point of repair. Bullying awareness has increased because of how many lives this issue has claimed in recent years, but there is still much to be exposed in order to stop bullying at its source. The books I have explored fall into the genre contemporary realistic fiction, with an emphasis on the effects and consequences of bullying in young adults. Books about bullying can inspire a plethora of virtues in young adults, such as hope, truth, bravery, friendship, perseverance, and self-worth. Likewise, books about bullying can teach morality, acceptance, tolerance, coping mechanisms, and many more important lessons for young adults to absorb in order to perpetuate better attitudes and a more peaceful future. My centerpiece book, Endgame by Nancy Garden, is important because the theme deals with bullying, an injustice to which young adults across the globe can relate. Bullying is also a very personal topic for me because I experienced it growing up, having been teased about my skin, teeth, stature, and ethnicity. During difficult times, I found solace in the books I read about characters dealing with similar situations. I could relate to the characters, their problems, and their worlds more easily than I could relate to anything about a magical world, in which it would be easy for me to pick up a wand and wave my problems away; instead, the books grounded in contemporary realistic fiction inspired me to continue facing each day when I felt weak and Galvan 2 scared.

  • PRETTY LITTLE LIARS by I. Marlene King "Pilot Episode" Sept 22, 2009
PRETTY LITTLE LIARS by I. Marlene King "Pilot Episode" Sept 22, 2009 PRETTY LITTLE LIARS “Pilot Episode” FADE IN: EXT. ROSEWOOD, PENNSYLVANIA - DAY Rosewood is a picture-perfect portrait of suburban America. Boutiques, restaurants, thriving businesses, and seemingly happy CITIZENS flourish in the charming town. As the sights and SOUNDS of the town overlap WE HEAR a radio report coming from a parked car. DISC JOCKEY (V.O.) Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer but it also marks the unsettling anniversary of the tragedy that still haunts everyone of us in Rosewood. EXT. ROSEWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD - DAY The tree lined street is flanked by traditional, two story houses. The picket fences are white, the lawns are green and flowers are abundant. A NEWSPAPER BOY delivers the local paper to a home and we catch a glimpse of the HEADLINE - STILL MISSING. INT. MONTGOMERY HOUSE - ARIA’S BEDROOM - DAY ARIA MONTGOMERY (16) stands in the middle of the unfurnished room. The door of her empty closet is ajar. She sees her reflection in the long mirror which hangs on the back of the door. With a ballet-dancer frame, straight black hair, and pouty lips, Aria knows that she is pretty. Just then her mother, ELLA (42), knocks then enters. Ella is an attractive, well read and liberal mother. ARIA It’s like starting all over again. Ella sits on the built-in window seat. ELLA You still have friends here. Aria sits next to her mom. They relate to each other more as friends than mother and daughter.

MARKETING POST-FEMINISM THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA: FAN IDENTIFICATION AND FASHION ON PRETTY LITTLE LIARS by Anna Donatelle A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee August 2014 ABSTRACT MARKETING POST-FEMINISM THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA: FAN IDENTIFICATION AND FASHION ON PRETTY LITTLE LIARS by Anna Donatelle The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2014 Under the Supervision of Professor Elana Levine Television shows targeted to a young, female audience often depict post-feminist themes such as self-sexualization, self-branding, consumerism, female empowerment through the body, and the “good” girl. This thesis focuses on the ABC Family hit series Pretty Little Liars as an example of the ways in which television shows promote these post-feminist ideologies. I argue that as the network has branded itself as the place for millennial programming; it has used digital platforms to make Pretty Little Liars a one-stop-shop for young women to learn about beauty and femininity.
