This morning our flight departs for Mahale National Park CHIMPANZEE which lies on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Since there are no roads or other infrastructure within the park boundaries, we transfer from the airstrip to the park via boat. Arrive at Greystoke Mahale situated on a pristine, white sandy beach overlooking the turquoise water of Lake Tanganyika, with the forested slopes of the 8,000-foot-high Mahale Mountains rising behind.

Tuesday & Wednesday, November 16 & 17 MAHALE NATIONAL PARK Mahale is one of only two protected areas for chimpanzees in Tanzania, and the population here is the largest in the country. Japanese researchers in the 1960s, have habituated the chimps to the presence of human observers. Hike into the mountains with local guides to search for the chimps, with the opportunity to sit quietly to watch them go about their daily lives. 335 bird species have been recorded here. Other activities include dhow cruises and fishing in Lake Tanganyika, strolling the forest trails, or simply lounging on the sandy beach to soak in your surroundings.

MARK BRAZIL – Mark developed his fascination with the natural world, especially birds, during his boyhood in the landlocked English county of Worcestershire. He then pursued academic interests in biology at universities in England and Scotland. Mark earned his Ph.D. from Stirling University, Scotland, for work on avian ecology and behavior. Since then ornithological research, natural history consultancy for TV companies, and guiding naturalists and wildlife photographers have taken him to all seven continents. Fascinated by island biology, he is a leading authority on the natural history of Japan and has had a number of books published including his most recent, A Field Guide to the Birds of Japan. While hitch-hiking around Kenya as a student in the 1970s, Mark caught the Africa “bug”. Since then he has traveled in search of wildlife in a dozen African countries, from Algeria to Zambia, and has led wildlife-watching expeditions in Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia. He is excited to be leading our Remote Tanzania expedition in 2021.

Know Before You Go Travel will be by small aircraft as well as jeeps and game-drive vehicles. Participants should be aware that the game drives are often over bumpy surfaces and can sometimes be long and strenuous. Most of the nights spent on safari will be in tented accommodations. These tents are en suite and are designed to the highest standards and are quite comfortable, with hot and cold water and showers in the adjoining bathroom area. Many have separate lounge and bar areas that often overlook waterways, which add to the excitement and ambiance of being on safari. It should be noted, however, that there are no fences around the camps, and animals of all sizes are sometimes encountered within the camp boundaries. Your visit is timed during the height of the dry season, characterized by clear, sunny days, with little to no rainfall. Temperatures range from the low 70s°F to mid-80s°F, with cooler temperatures at night.
