Moreover, with about 44 social currencies, 14 complementary currencies, Switzerland, counts among reference case studies in the virtual, social and complementary currency systems domain. Nevertheless, some questions remain: (1) What is the historical, cultural, political and economical context of this innovation laboratory? (2) What is the relevant legislation to support such monetary innovation? (3) What are the genuine utility and impact of these currencies? To contribute to these research questions, a literature review and a research survey will allow us not only to overview the Swiss and the Greater Geneva currency systems, but also evaluate the interest of using complementary and virtual currency systems for a sustainable economy.

Ceded by treaty to France by the northern Italian kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, these two mountainous border territories had long been culturally and geo-strategically in the French orbit. Unlike their counterparts in any other province of France, the inhabitants of the two territories were asked to approve or reject the annexation treaty, and thus their incorporation into France, in a plebiscite employing universal male suffrage.

By Nayef Al-Rodhan for ISN Introduction On 19 May 2015, Geneva will celebrate the two-hundredth anniversary of its accession to the Swiss Confederation. This occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on how the past two hundred years have transformed Geneva’s relationship to Switzerland and Geneva’s role in the world. With a population of less than 200,000 inhabitants, Geneva is a global and multicultural city, a hub for humanitarian diplomacy, an epicenter for banking and trading, and it ranks behind only Zurich and Vienna in global measures of the quality of life. Alongside New York, Geneva has also become one of the most active locations for multilateral diplomacy . It hosts 30 international organizations, including the European headquarters of the United Nations, 250 international non-governmental organizations and 172 permanent missions. In total, the international sector in Geneva employs over 28,000 people. Geneva is a center of humanitarian action, education, peacekeeping, security and nuclear research. This critical mass of mandates makes the city uniquely relevant in world politics. The story of how Geneva acquired this role is tightly connected to the history of power politics in Europe, the distinct advantages of Swiss neutrality and the evolution of international diplomacy.

[p97] The Court, composed as above, delivers the following judgment: [1] By a Special Agreement, which was signed at Paris on October 30th, 1924 - the ratifications being exchanged on March 21st, 1928 - and which was filed with the Registry of the Court under cover of letters dated March 29th, 1928, from the Ministers of France and Switzerland at The Hague, the Governments of the French Republic and of the Swiss Confederation, having been unable to agree in regard to the interpretation to be placed upon Article 435, paragraph 2, of the Treaty of Versailles, with its Annexes, and not having been able to effect the agreement provided for therein by direct negotiations, have asked the Court to determine the said interpretation, and to settle all the questions involved by the execution of paragraph 2 of Article 435 of the said Treaty.
