CELEBRATING THE TH 25 ANNIVERSARY of the Transition to Family & Consumer Sciences

In the 1980s in the U.S., multiple terms were becoming more common to identify the field of home economics. A growing number of professionals felt like home economics did not accurately describe what the field was and how it had evolved. Hence, a summit to build consensus on a name was held in 1993 wherein leaders in the field presented a rationale, evaluated options, and made recommendations for the future of the field. In 1994 there was an official vote to change the name. Outcomes of the meeting were published as The Scottsdale Meeting: Positioning the Profession for the 21st Century and named after the summit’s location: Scottsdale, Arizona.

Based on these recommendations, a major transition in terminology occurred in the U.S. to move from home economics to family and consumer sciences. The term family and consumer sciences puts a focus on targeted audiences – families as the cornerstone of society and consumers as those individuals who make an economic impact on society. Including sciences in the term shows that the field is research based.
