CAUTION PLEASE Did you know that 15 mph is the speed limit on the Candor Central School District campus roads and parking lots? The reason for this speed limit is to keep everyone safe. Both students and adults have stepped out between parked cars without being seen by drivers coming through the parking lot. A car going faster than 15 mph would have a hard time stopping in time to avoid hitting them. Yikes! Who wants to be responsible for injuring a child or another parent? So, we are asking that you PLEASE SLOW DOWN to 15 mph when driving on school property. Plan ahead so that you are not rushing to get to work or to an appointment or to get your child to school on time. And on those days when nothing is going right, it is still better to be late than to hurt someone! Did you know that the same rules apply on school property as on other roads? You should not be on your cell phone while driving, not even if you are only going 15 mph! You should not park in the fire lanes (where the curb is painted yellow) - even if it is outside the normal school day hours. Your car could get towed away if it is left there. And as always, please stop for all busses when the red lights are flashing! Whether you are approaching the bus, or behind the bus, you must stop! It’s the law! Even on school grounds! Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe. FEBRUARY 2018 CANDOR CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS PAGE 2 News & Notes Are You Interested in Becoming A School Board Member? The terms for three of our present school board members will expire on June 30, 2018. If you are interested in becoming a school board member, you must be a qualified voter of the district (at least 18 years of age and a citizen of the United States), a resident of the Candor School District for a continuous and uninterrupted period of at least one year, and submit a petition which contains at least 25 signatures from other district residents. Petitions will be available in the District Office at 1 Academy Street, starting on Friday, March 23, 2018. The petitions must be returned to the District Clerk no later than Monday, April 16, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. Please feel free to contact Kathy Hinkle, District Clerk, by phone at 659-5010, or by email at [email protected], if you have any questions. PROCEDURAL SAFEGUARD NOTICE The Procedural Safeguard Notice is a mandated document which outlines “your legal rights under federal and state laws to be informed about and involved TRANSPORTATION in the special education process and to make sure that your child receives a free appropriate public education TO (FAPE)”. The current document is 46 pages long and must be provided to the parents of Special Education PRIVATE SCHOOLS students each year. The document is available on the school website under the Special Education link. Please remember that If you would prefer to receive a hard copy, you can applications for transportation contact the Special Education Office at 607-659-7727 or to private schools for the the District Office at 607-659-5010. 2018-2019 school year are due to the District Office by April 1, 2018. Thank you. FEBRUARY 2018 CANDOR CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS PAGE 3 Health Office Information Effective July 1st, 2018, the mandated years for health exams and screening will change. In addition, only the approved NYS School Health Examination Form may be used to document health exams. Health examinations will be required in grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Vision screening for distance and near vision acuity will be required within 6 months of admission to school and in grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 11. Hearing screening will be required within 6 months of admission to school and in grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7, and 11. Scoliosis screening will be required in grades 5 and 7 for girls and grade 9 for boys. If you have any questions, please contact the school nurse’s office: Elementary School: Esther Woods, RN - 659-4965 High School: Karen Oakley, RN - 659-5225 Please remember to send your children to school with the proper winter clothing since we have a couple of cold winter months remaining. The students go outside for recess if the temperature is 20 degrees or above. We do not want them to miss out on the fresh air and exercise. Therefore, they need to be dressed properly. Thank you. FEBRUARY 2018 CANDOR CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS PAGE 4 Health Office Information The Flu: What To Do If You Get Sick How do I know if I have the flu? You may have the flu if you have some or all of these symptoms: fever** cough sore throat runny or stuffy nose sometimes diarrhea and vomiting headache chills fatigue body aches **It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever. What should I do if I get sick? Most people with the flu have mild illness and do not need medical care or antiviral drugs. If you get sick with flu symptoms, in most cases, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people except to get medical care. If, however, you have symptoms of flu and are in a high risk group, or are very sick or worried about your illness, contact your health care provider (doctor, physician assistant, etc.). Certain people are at high risk of serious flu-related complications (including young children, people 65 and older, pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions). This is true both for seasonal flu and novel flu virus infections. (For a full list of people at high risk of flu-related complications, see People at High Risk of Developing Flu–Related Complications). If you are in a high risk group and develop flu symptoms, it’s best for you to contact your doctor early in your illness. Remind them about your high risk status for flu. CDC recommends that people at high risk for complications should get antiviral treatment as early as possible, because benefit is greatest if treatment is started within 2 days after illness onset. Do I need to go the emergency room if I am only a little sick? No. The emergency room should be used for people who are very sick. You should not go to the emergency room if you are only mildly ill. If you have the emergency warning signs of flu sickness, you should go to the emergency room. If you get sick with flu symptoms and are at high risk of flu complications or you are concerned about your illness, call your health care provider for advice. If you go to the emergency room and you are not sick with the flu, you may catch it from people who do have it. FEBRUARY 2018 CANDOR CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS PAGE 5 Health Office Information What are the emergency warning signs of flu sickness? In children: *Fast breathing or trouble breathing *Bluish skin color *Not drinking enough fluids *Not waking up or not interacting *Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held *Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough *Fever with a rash In addition to the signs above, get medical help right away for any infant who has any of these signs: *Being unable to eat *Has trouble breathing *Has no tears when crying *Significantly fewer wet diapers than normal In adults *Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath *Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen *Sudden dizziness *Confusion *Severe or persistent vomiting *Flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and worse cough Are there medicines to treat the flu? Yes. There are drugs your doctor may prescribe for treating the flu called “antivirals.” These drugs can make you better faster and may also prevent serious complications. See Treatment – Antiviral Drugs for more information. How long should I stay home if I’m sick? CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or other necessities. Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine, such as Tylenol®. You should stay home from work, school, travel, shopping, social events, and public gatherings. What should I do while I’m sick? Stay away from others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. If you must leave home, for example to get medical care, wear a facemask if you have one, or cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Wash your hands often to keep from spreading flu to others. Colorado State University Seal The Colorado State University seal is a modification of the official State of Colorado Seal, approved by the first General Assembly of the State of Colorado on March 15, 1877. The seal consists of the eye of God within a triangle, from which golden rays radiate. Below the triangle is a bundle of birch or elm rods, wrapped with a scroll and around a battle axe bound by thongs. The scroll is called a Roman fasces and is the insignia of a republican form of government. The bundle of rods bound together symbolizes strength, which is lacking in the single rod. The axe symbolizes authority and leadership. Below the scroll is the heraldic shield bearing across the top three snow-capped mountains. The lower half of the shield has two miner’s tools, the pick and sledge hammer, crossed on the ground. As the University evolved, the seal was updated to reflect changes to the school’s name. The original name was the State Agricultural College. In 1935, the name changed to Colorado State College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts. In 1957, the name was again changed – this time to Colorado State University. The original seal was made of hand-tooled leather. Damaged during the campus flooding of 1938, the original border was cut away in a random and arbitrary fashion and stitched back down on a new piece of leather in a scallop-like manner, giving the seal its current appearance.

A REPORT FOR 2010 Founded in 1993, HBRF works to sustain and enhance the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study in New Hampshire, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service/Northern Research Station, the National Science Foundation’s Long-Term Ecological Research Network (LTER), the Hubbard Brook Consortium, and many colleges, universities, and other research institutions. Our goals are: » To sustain and expand long-term ecological monitoring and research at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. » To bridge the gap between ecosystem science and public policy by enhancing the exchange of information among scientists, policymakers, and land managers. » To foster public understanding of the functions of ecosystems and their importance to society. HUBBARD BROOK CONSORTIUM The Hubbard Brook Consortium is a membership group of research and educational institutions that supports the work of HBRF and the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES), with special emphasis on field research opportunities for undergraduates and public outreach events. In 2010, the Second Annual Hubbard Brook Consortium Lecture for the Environment featured HBES co-founder Dr. Gene Likens on his decades-long research at Mirror Lake.
