SOUND OF CINEMA: THE MUSIC THAT MADE THE MOVIES BBC Four Programme Information Neil Brand presenter and composer said, “It's so fantastic that the BBC, the biggest producer of music content, is showing how music works for films this autumn with Sound of Cinema. Film scores demand an extraordinary degree of both musicianship and dramatic understanding on the part of their composers. Whilst creating potent, original music to synchronise exactly with the images, composers are also making that music as discreet, accessible and communicative as possible, so that it can speak to each and every one of us. Film music demands the highest standards of its composers, the insight to 'see' what is needed and come up with something new and original. With my series and the other content across the BBC’s Sound of Cinema season I hope that people will hear more in their movies than they ever thought possible.” Part 1: The Big Score In the first episode of a new series celebrating film music for BBC Four as part of a wider Sound of Cinema Season on the BBC, Neil Brand explores how the classic orchestral film score emerged and why it’s still going strong today. Neil begins by analysing John Barry's title music for the 1965 thriller The Ipcress File. Demonstrating how Barry incorporated the sounds of east European instruments and even a coffee grinder to capture a down at heel Cold War feel, Neil highlights how a great composer can add a whole new dimension to film. Music has been inextricably linked with cinema even since the days of the "silent era", when movie houses employed accompanists ranging from pianists to small orchestras. -

He’ll talk about Shakespeare, his life as an actor and choose some fascinating music. Producer: Sarah Devonald, Somethin’Else Composer of the Week Monday 18th - Friday 22nd April 1200 – 1300 William Byrd There is frustratingly little evidence that William Byrd was personally acquainted with his fellow Elizabethan, William Shakespeare. Although, a tantalising reference to “the bird of loudest lay” in Shakespeare’s sonnet, The Phoenix and the Turtle hints that they may have been more than mere contemporaries. As a Roman Catholic in Elizabethan England, William Byrd was persecuted by the state and often forced to tread a dangerous path between his personal convictions and his duty to the Queen. His musical talent and his strength of character enabled him not just to survive, but thrive. Despite his trials, he was, and continues to be, celebrated as the greatest British musician of his age. SOUNDS OF SHAKESPEARE LIVE 22nd – 24th April, Stratford-upon-Avon Radio 3 broadcasts live all weekend from its pop-up studio at the Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Other Place theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and at venues across the town. Actors, musicians, poets, singers and orchestras perform a huge range of songs, film scores, jazz, chamber music, choral works and world music - all inspired by Shakespeare's works. -

There was a shortage of news at the beginning of the year, and since the summer there has been a shortage of time and efficiency. As my French counterpart has reminded me in no uncertain terms, our Bulletins are our only contact with most of our members. Please be assured that the Society is still running; our bank account is well in the black; and we can look forward to some exciting events in the year 2000. I must thank all the members who kept the faith by sending subscriptions or donations during this fallow year. Your contributions have all been recorded, and if you wish I will carry them over for 2000. If, in the usual rush to fill envelopes once the bulletin is printed and ready for dispatch, I enclose a form for subscriptions or donations which you feel is unnecessary, then please be assured that I will keep your name on the mailing list. As you will read later, we can certainly use some new funds, so any donations or subscriptions for 2000 will be welcomed and acknowledged. I intend to issue a receipt or membership card for the coming year, with each paid-up member allocated a reference number. This will enable you to obtain discounts on some products such as the new CDs of the chamber music and the CD from Symposium Records containing Nicholas King's organ recital. -

BBC Radio in the Digital Era (1982 - ) Professor Jeremy Summerly 15 April 2021 On Hallowe’en in 1981, Paul Vaughan became the presenter of Radio 3’s Record Review. Vaughan took over from John Lade (the programme’s founder-presenter) who had presented exactly 1,000 editions of the programme. Lade had led his listeners from 78s to LPs and Vaughan ushered in the CD era. Since its very first episode in 1957, ‘Building a Library’ has been at the heart of Record Review (re-named CD Review from 1998 until 2015). For most of its history ‘Building a Library’ has been a pre-recorded monologue punctuated by comparative musical examples, but on 22 March 2014 it was broadcast as a two-way live interview with presenter Andrew McGregor from a pop-up studio in London’s Southbank Centre. Thus, I was the first contributor to deliver ‘Building a Library’ live (having worked as a freelance contributor to the programme since 1992). On that spring morning in 2014, I chose Trevor Pinnock’s 1993 recording of Mozart’s Coronation Mass over the 1971 version by the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis. A group of dedicated CD Review listeners had congregated around the BBC pod to witness the live broadcast of the programme, and during the course of the segment they started to react to my analytical observations with muted applause and/or good-natured hisses of disapproval. That direct contact with the CD Review audience was a wonderful experience, albeit a predictably confirmatory one: Radio 3’s audience has an average age of around 60 years old, and that was borne out that morning in the Royal Festival Hall foyer. -

Radio 3 Audience Research The following is based on the latest RAJAR information (some of which is available to the public at www.rajar.co.uk). The greater detail available is this report is taken from analysis tools available in many advertising agencies, research companies and other media owners, including all the major commercial radio groups. Nothing presented here is exclusive to the BBC. RAJAR is the joint industry body jointly owned by the BBC and Commercial Radio. It measures radio listening through diaries that are placed with over 130,000 people a year. It’s worth noting that the methodology of RAJAR changed at the beginning of 1999 making strict comparisons with data before that date inaccurate. Prior to RAJAR starting at the end of 1992, the BBC used their own measurement system. For the purposes of this document, I’ve concentrated on more recent years for which full RAJAR is available. Note that all the information here is based on Adults 15+ (the age at which RAJAR defines an adult). There obviously are child listeners (71,000 at the latest count), but I’ve excluded them from this document. Definitions The following are definitions of some of the terms used, as listed on the RAJAR website. Total Survey Area (TSA) The area within which a station's audience is measured. Population The number of people aged 15+ who live within the TSA of a given station. Weekly Reach The number of people aged 15+ who tune to a radio station within at least 1 quarter- hour period over the course of a week. -

In Tune From the 2 October, Radio 3’s flagship afternoon drive-time programme In Tune will move into a slightly later slot, from 5 until 7pm. It will be immediately followed by a brand-new half-hour segment: In Tune Mixtape. This will take the form of an unpresented sequence of music; often contrasting, sometimes surprising, this juxtaposition of works will be an engaging start to the evening on Radio 3. Each mixtape will be easily downloadable, available on the BBC Music App and the Radio 3 website so audiences can listen anytime. This Autumn also marks Sean Rafferty MBE’s 20th anniversary presenting In Tune.
