Degree awarded June 2017 ii © 2017 Michael Sean Munger iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Michael Sean Munger Doctor of Philosophy Department of History June 2017 Title: Ten Years of Winter: The Cold Decade and Environmental Consciousness in the Early 19 th Century Two volcanic eruptions in 1809 and 1815 shrouded the earth in sulfur dioxide and triggered a series of weather and climate anomalies manifesting themselves between 1810 and 1819, a period that scientists have termed the “Cold Decade.” People who lived during the Cold Decade appreciated its anomalies through direct experience, and they employed a number of cognitive and analytical tools to try to construct the environmental worlds in which they lived. Environmental consciousness in the early 19 th century commonly operated on two interrelated layers. -

www.amatterofmind.us From the desk of Pierre Beaudry Page 1 of 23 PIERRE L’ENFANT AND BENJAMIN BANNEKER: THE MANIFEST DESTINY OF WASHINGTON D.C. by Pierre Beaudry, January 5, 2001 INTRODUCTION: THE GRAND DESIGN OF MANIFEST DESTINY Some people said that the design for the city of Washington D.C. came from the heavens, that Pierre L’Enfant determined the location of the House of Congress, and the House of the President, in accordance with the stars, and that such an orientation was in concordance with the design of the MANIFEST DESTINY, which had inspired George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and Alexander Hamilton. This is all true. Pierre L’Enfant, Andrew Ellicott, and Benjamin Banneker, reached to the heavens for their inalienable rights, and executed these Great Federal Improvements by means of which the Capital City of the United States was made to become, in the small, the historical microcosm of the nation as a whole. This report, will attempt to revive the sublime character of this enterprise, imposing by the greatness of its heroic effort, and yet humbling by the goodness and simplicity of its purpose. In all events, it is clear that Washington DC, was meant to become the first Capital city of the world, whose explicit function was to express the true measure of what can be accomplished with the genius of a people who is persistent in the fight for the freedom of all peoples, on the shores of America, as anywhere else in the world. There is no doubt that such a design required to be secured within the borders of history, and immortalized, for all centuries to come, by the creation, on this continent, of an entirely new city to be built, from the ground up; a city of “magnificent distances”, that would reflect, in spiritual and physical space-time, an old and revolutionary idea that could not be implemented on the old continent. -

RG 21 E6 Legal Affairs of Black Washingtonians Unfortunately, lots of the Circuit Court’s paperwork has disappeared. The docket book for the December term, 1816, for instance lists a Criminal Trial 2, “U.S. v. Caleb Simpson...for keeping a disorderly house, & harbouring slaves on the sabbath,” but there are no surviving documents that relate to the case. There are entire terms of the court for which no petitions for freedom survive. What follows is a list of cases for which there is at least some documentation extant. Box 1 contains miscellaneous early documents, including an arrest warrant for “Negro Ben,” who had run away from Sabrett Scott, and a writ of error for Ben’s wrongful imprisonment. Seiken, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor John Guilmartin, Jr., Advisor Professor Margaret Newell _______________________ Professor Mark Grimsley Advisor History Graduate Program ABSTRACT In the 1780s, there was broad agreement among American revolutionaries like Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton about the need for a strong national navy. This consensus, however, collapsed as a result of the partisan strife of the 1790s. The Federalist Party embraced the strategic rationale laid out by naval boosters in the previous decade, namely that only a powerful, seagoing battle fleet offered a viable means of defending the nation's vulnerable ports and harbors. Federalists also believed a navy was necessary to protect America's burgeoning trade with overseas markets. Republicans did not dispute the desirability of the Federalist goals, but they disagreed sharply with their political opponents about the wisdom of depending on a navy to achieve these ends. In place of a navy, the Republicans with Jefferson and Madison at the lead championed an altogether different prescription for national security and commercial growth: economic coercion. The Federalists won most of the legislative confrontations of the 1790s. But their very success contributed to the party's decisive defeat in the election of 1800 and the abandonment of their plans to create a strong blue water navy. -

Great Atlantic Coastal Snowstorms
Great Atlantic Coastal Snowstorms Capt. John Smith in his general history referred to the extreme cold of the winter of 1607-1608. Details as to the occurrence of snowfall and the duration of cold are missing from the records. But the severity of the first winter is responsible for the deaths of more than half the colony. However, the following winter was warmer than average. During the first years of the New England colonies the winter of 1632 – 1633 stood out for its deep January snows and cold freezing up ponds and rivers in the Boston area. The next winter of note was 1637 – 1638 which also ranked as being severe with snow in Boston area standing 18 inches deep. Beyond the Merrimac River it was said that the snow was 36 inches deep on the level with even greater depths occurring in southern Maine. Early American Winters 1604-1820 by David M. Ludlum p. 32.
