Fifty years ago every child at one time or another played with a tabletop model railway. Today we see that from a very early age computers and the internet influence our youngsters to a much greater extent; meaning they are much less likely to follow the many self-creative hobbies of the past. The Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club, now in its 82nd year, is a group of railway enthusiasts drawn from all parts of London and Essex. Th e combined membership brings an untold variety of creative skills into play in the following of our hobby. Whilst we smile when ‘playing trains’ is mentioned, we believe our hobby demands a level of creativity that is required by few other hobbies. Involvement in the hobby will inevitably stimulate - because of the knowledge and skills required to build a model or a complete layout. It will bring the same levels of satisfaction to the participant we have seen demonstrated at the recent Olympics. We migh t not be in a position to provide tabletop model railways for the very young, but we welcome their involvement with their parents on our fun-filled open days, when they can ride on trains in the club grounds, and be further inspired when viewing a variety of member layouts in the club room. Perhaps later to consider membership? We hope so. The stepping-stone into a hobby of a lifetime is available here now, just ask any member or at the Club Membership Stand for details. Steve Wraight Chairman Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club. The charitable Trust is run entirely by volunteers and exists to preserve Thames Barges and pass on the traditions and skills of maintaining and sailing them. We own two Thames Sailing Barges: ‘Centaur’ built in Harwich in 1895 and ‘Pudge’ built in Rochester in 1922. They were originally used to carry a huge variety of cargo around the coasts and rivers of England. The two barges are maintained at the Quay in Maldon, Essex. If you would like to find out more about the work of the Trust or about becoming a member or volunteer, please speak to us on the stand, or visit our web site at www.bargetrust.org. Florida Creek Siding Brian Daly 8 On30 Gauge, North American The layout was built by Kathy Millatt, for a competition at the 2008 NMRA BR convention (it came second). The rules stated that it had to be less than 8 square feet, with a maximum dimension of 4 feet. The layout is 3 feet in diameter. It contains a river, tall trees and rocks, with a small siding served by a stub point. The layout is built on 4” foam insulation, made up of 2 layers, these were glued together with an own brand “No more nails” The track used is hand laid using wooden ties pre stained and then glued onto the foam board. Code 75 rail was then spiked to the ties. The inner rail was laid first the using a three point gauge the outer rail was spiked to the sleepers. Cripplebush rubber rocks are used to form the main scenery; these were used to keep the weight down and are available from the States via the internet. The rubber can be cut with scissors and easily glued together. DCC is used to control the locos, all locos are fitted with DCC chips and sound is fitted in some. The sound can be switched off if needed. In addition to the layout there will be a modelling demonstration in On30. 6 Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club WEST ESSEX MODELRAIL 2012 Blackshaw Yard Mick Hazeltine 9 O Gauge, British 01708 442836 Blackshaw Yard is one half of a modular layout depicting early BR private warehousing, designed to allow complicated shunting moves. Vauxhall Road Bob Farrell 11 OO Gauge, British Accepted as the world's largest suburban electric railway network, ‘the Southern’, with its third rail system, covers some 3000 route miles. Stretching from Medway Kent to Weymouth in Dorset and serving no less than six London termini. Vauxhall Road does not seek to represent any specific part of the suburbs. Hopefully however, it brings together many parts of the network with modelling licence. The aim is to provide an overview of Southern Electric operations. This will allow many of the varied liveries to be seen. The layout is based on the period from 1990 to present day, providing range for both the outgoing EPBs and Mk1 stock, current electric units, and new ones as they become operational. 7 Ilford & West Essex Model Railway Club WEST ESSEX MODELRAIL 2012 Upper & Lower Crofton Alan Waredraper G Scale 45mm Gauge, British I & WEMRC 12 www.iwemrc.org.uk This layout depicts the fictitious town of Crofton, which the locals sub- divide into two distinct halves: Upper Crofton with its idyllic old-fashioned shops, post office, pub, picturesque town square and regular tram service, is the very essence of gentility. Who wouldn't want to live there? Lower Crofton - a dirty, noisy industrial area with its dockside railway, oil refinery and factories - has just one redeeming feature; it manufactures the sherry that gives the town its name and keeps the inhabitants of Upper Crofton supplied with their favourite aperitif. The layout is still under construction, so at the present time the upper level can be run automatically; the lower level is manually operated for now, but will be automated as well. Trackwork is mostly LGB, with hand-made Y points, and the dual gauge track by the dockside made by modifying LGB track. Buildings, bridges and structures are all scratch-built, mostly from plywood. The finer detailing of the buildings, inside and out, is a mixture of railway and dollhouse accessories, and some improvised from cheaper materials. See if you can spot which are which! The town has been known to attract some famous characters, so see if you can spot those as well!
