Abstract Since color has the power to influence viewers of a film both noticeably and viscerally, it is one of the most significant visual storytelling tools. There is however very little content available about this topic, and quite often the effects caused by the fundamental colors are generalized. This bachelor thesis is, therefore, examining the use of the color blue in visual storytelling in an exem- plary manner for animated films. The foundation for this analysis is the research reported in the first chapters of this thesis, in which the use of the color blue in character design, lighting design and important props is explored. For this, the costumes and character designs of 65 movie char- acter, blue scenes in 91 films as well as numerous blue objects have been evaluated. Based on these results, the animated films CORALINE, CORPSE BRIDE and INSIDE OUT have been analyzed and interpreted in these design possibilities. This thesis aims to break down the symbolic power and effect of the color blue in visual storytelling and examine the complex possibilities of use which this color offers. Therefore this thesis is addressed to filmmakers and media professionals who have a deep interest in the efficient use of color theory as well as all those who wish to gain a sounder understanding of the design opportunities through color in film. Critical Statement Felicita is a complete 90-page screenplay written for an animated feature film that is based equally on the lives of my Nanu Judith Balogh, and my great-great-great-great grandmother, Countess Felicita Anna Murari. Because I envision Felicita as an animated movie in the style of a Disney/Pixar feature, in addition to my screenplay I decided to assemble a physical art concept book and digital pitch deck that use original artwork and inspirational images gathered during my research and writing process. In its entirety, my capstone comprises two years of extensive research, planning, writing, editing, and rewriting. Felicita has become a project that is deeply personal to me and one of my proudest accomplishments, not only because of the factual connections, but also because I hope to use the story to spread positive messages about true love and personal happiness.

Fifty II. Editor’s BLURB by Dave Giarrusso DIGITAL e had a lot of big plans for our 50th issue (“DP# 50: Wfi fty!” just in case your short term memory functions a bit like mine does as of late) and fortunately, most of ‘em made it in. UNfortunately, due to time and space constraints, and a mischievious orange tabby by the name of “Pickles”, a scant few of ‘em got left on the cutting room fl oor. The one portion of the 50th issue that we (okay, actually John) were working really hard on was the “alumni moments” section - a section devoted to all the PRESS game designers and artists who shaped what we’ve come to call our favorite pasttime. As you can probably imagine, it was a big undertaking - too big to make it into the pages of issue #50. DIGITAL PRESS # 52 MAY / JUNE 2003 BUT - guess what? John kept nagging everyone in his most convincing voice Founders Joe Santulli and eventually, with nothing but the most polite coercion, managed to round Kevin Oleniacz up the troops. Contact: [email protected] Neo-Disney: Recent Developments in Disney Feature Animation Dr. Chris Pallant Introduction The Princess and the Frog (Ron Clements and John Musker, 2009) marks a return by Disney to its hand-drawn roots. Understandably, many responses to the film have centred on its protagonist, Tiana, Disney’s first black Princess. This focus, however, has drawn attention away from the fact that with this latest release the Studio has also returned to a more traditional style of filmmaking.1 Significantly, Disney’s previous 2D hand-drawn film, Home on the Range (Will Finn and John Sanford, 2004), concluded what had been a stylistically progressive sequence of theatrically released features which broke with the hyperrealist conventions most commonly associated with the Studio’s feature animation. Comprising of Fantasia 2000 (James Algar et al., 1999), The Emperor’s New Groove (Mark Dindal, 2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, 2001), Lilo and Stitch (Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, 2002), Treasure Planet (Ron Clements and John Musker, 2002), Brother Bear (Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker, 2003), and Home on the Range, this critically neglected period of feature animation provides the focus of this article; to help distinguish this discrete sequence of films from the larger Disney canon, they will be referred to as Neo-Disney features.

Case 2:17-cv-02185-MWF-JC Document 38 Filed 11/08/17 Page 1 of 40 Page ID #:595 UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA CIVIL MINUTES—GENERAL JS-6 Case No. CV 17-02185-MWF (JCx) Date: November 8, 2017 Title: Esplanade Productions, Inc. -v.- The Walt Disney Company, et al. Present: The Honorable MICHAEL W. FITZGERALD, U.S. District Judge Deputy Clerk: Court Reporter: Rita Sanchez Not Reported Attorneys Present for Plaintiff: Attorneys Present for Defendant: None Present None Present Proceedings (In Chambers): ORDER RE MOTION TO DISMISS PLAINTIFF’S FIRST AMENDED COMPLAINT [31] In this action, Esplanade, the solely-owned corporation of well-known Hollywood writer, director, and producer Gary L. Goldman, seeks to prove that Disney stole the idea for its hit animated film Zootopia from Goldman. In support of its claims, Esplanade alleges that Goldman twice shared a synopsis and treatment for the movie Looney, along with his ideas and artwork for a larger franchise called “Zootopia,” with Disney agents and executives. The parties presently dispute only whether Goldman’s materials are sufficiently similar to the Disney film to support an action for copyright infringement. In other words, the Court assumes that Disney had the opportunity to copy Goldman’s work. The question is whether Disney copied original, protectable elements of Goldman’s work. The Court has now had the opportunity to review Goldman’s work and compare it to Zootopia. Applying the “extrinsic” portion of the Ninth Circuit’s “substantial similarity” test, the Court concludes that the plots, themes, dialogue, moods, settings, pace, characters, and sequence of events in Zootopia and Goldman’s work are not sufficiently similar for Esplanade to proceed beyond the “extrinsic” portion of the test.
