Published June 8, 1969 Price for this issue $.90 THE MAMMAL FAUNA OF SCHULZE CAVE, EDWARDS COUNTY, TEXAS WALTER W. DALQUEST, EDWARD ROTH, AND FRANK JUDD SYNOPSIS: Vertebrate remains from two levels in Schulze Cave, Edwards County, Texas, are analyzed. The younger materials probably date from ca. 5,000 B.P. to 8,800 B.P. The fauna is essentially modern, but the absence of the armadillo collared peccary, ringtail, and rock squirrel is thought to be significant. The older materials probably date from ca. 11,000 B.P. to 8;000 B.P. The mam- malian fauna of these Pleistocene sediments includes 62 species, of which 8 are extinct, 19 are not now regident on the Edwards Plateau, and 40 still live in the general area of the cave. Three species have not previously been reported from Pleistocene deposits in Texas: vagrant shrew, eastern chipmunk, and western jumping mouse. -

Expansion of suburbia is often coupled with replacement of native plants by alien ornamental plants such as crepe myrtle, Bradford pear, and Japanese maple. Two projects were conducted for this thesis. The purpose of the first project (Chapter 2) was to conduct an analysis of existing larval Lepidoptera and Symphyta hostplant records in the southeastern United States, comparing their species richness on common native and alien woody plants. We found that, in most cases, native plants support more species of eruciform larvae compared to aliens. Alien congener plant species (those in the same genus as native species) supported more species of larvae than alien, non-congeners. Most of the larvae that feed on alien plants are generalist species. However, most of the specialist species feeding on alien plants use congeners of native plants, providing evidence of a spillover, or false spillover, effect. -

DAVIS Associate Curator of Lepidoptera SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION WASHINGTON, 1964 Publications of the United States National Museum The scientific publications of the United States National Museum include two series, Proceedings of the United States National Museum and United States National Museum Bulletin. In these series are published original articles and monographs dealing with the collections and work of the Museum and setting forth newly acquired facts in the fields of anthropology, biology, geology, history, and technology. Copies of each publication are distributed to libraries and scientific organizations and to specialists and others interested in the various subjects. The Proceedings, begun in 1878, are intended for the publication, in separate form, of shorter papers. These are gathered in volumes, octavo in size, with the publication date of each paper recorded in the table of contents of the volume. In the Bulletin series, the first of which was issued in 1875, appear longer, separate publications consisting of monographs (occasionally in several parts) and volumes in which are collected works on related subjects. Bulletins are either octavo or quarto in size, depending on the needs of the presentation. Since 1902, papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum have been published in the Bulletin series under the heading Contributions from the United States National Herbarium. The majority of American orthohantaviruses are known to cause disease in humans, and most of these pathogenic strains were not described prior to human cases, indicating the importance of understanding all members of the virus clade. In this review, we summarize information on the ecology of under-studied rodent-borne American orthohantaviruses to form general conclusions and highlight important gaps in knowledge. Information regarding the presence and genetic diversity of many orthohantaviruses throughout the distributional range of their hosts is minimal and would significantly benefit from virus isolations to indicate a reservoir role. Additionally, few studies have investigated the mechanisms underlying transmission routes and factors affecting the environmental persistence of orthohantaviruses, limiting our understanding of factors driving prevalence fluctuations. As landscapes continue to change, host ranges and human exposure to orthohantaviruses likely will as well. Research on the ecology of neglected orthohantaviruses is necessary for understanding both current and future threats to human health. -

Generic name usage is conservative (when opinions vary on how to divide monophyletic groups) and generally follows that used in A Field Guide to Eastern Butterflies (Opler 1992, 1998), A Field Guide to Western Butterflies (Opler 1999) and the Stanford and Opler (1993) Atlas to Western USA Butterflies (updated as Opler et al. 2000). Some changes are made to conform with recent research results (e.g. Emmel 1998) and with Palaearctic and Neotropical publications (see References). The list that follows includes superfamily, family, and subfamily categories (with tribes for some Lycaenidae), generally in accord with the arrangement presented by de Jong et al. -

Number Forty-One Fall 2006 Cover: A wild Peromyscus with the tan streak color pattern found in Alberta, Canada. We believe the species to be Peromyscus maniculatus borealis. The tan streak animals in the PGSC colony originated from a closed colony of P. maniculatus nubiterrae trapped in the southern Blue Ridge Mountains of Macon County, North Carolina. This mouse, however, was trapped at 56-38-30 N by 123-23-24 W, elevation 1,111 meters. Rice Rat Oryzomys Palustris Natator
Rice Rat Oryzomys palustris natator he rice rat, or silver rice rat as it is commonly called, Federal Status: Endangered (April 30, 1991) is a small wetland rodent adapted to the unique Critical Habitat: Designated (Sept. 1993) Tisland habitats of the Lower Keys, Florida. The Florida Status: Endangered silver rice rat differs from the more common marsh rice rat Recovery Plan Status: Original (May 18, 1999) by its rarity, larger body size, lower fecundity, and larger Geographic Coverage: Rangewide home range size. Populations of these rice rats are found at extremely low densities on 12 islands in the Lower Keys and were listed as endangered primarily because their Figure 1. With a small population size and restricted geographic range, rice rats in the Florida Keys are greatly impacted by loss of habitat. Dredge and fill activities and other habitat alterations reduce the likelihood this species can persist. This account represents the recovery plan for the rice rat in the Florida Keys. Description The rice rat in the Lower Keys, also known as the silver rice rat, was described as a full species (Spitzer and Lazell 1978) based on two specimens trapped in a freshwater marsh on Cudjoe Key in 1973. This rice rat externally resembles other marsh rice rats in general form, being a medium-sized, semi-aquatic, generalized rat. However, the silver rice rat is distinct in having no tufts of digital bristles projecting beyond the ends of the median claws in the hind foot, by silver-gray pelage coloring laterally, and by a narrow, delicate skull with elongate nasal bones (Spitzer and Lazell 1978).
