MUSEUMS, NATIVE AMERICAN REPRESENTATION, AND THE PUBLIC: THE ROLE OF MUSEUM ANTHROPOLOGY IN PUBLIC HISTORY, 1875-1925 BY Nathan Sowry ABSTRACT Surveying the most influential U.S. museums and World’s Fairs at the turn of the twentieth century, this study traces the rise and professionalization of museum anthropology during the period now referred to as the Golden Age of American Anthropology, 1875-1925. Specifically, this work examines the lives and contributions of the leading anthropologists and Native collaborators employed at these museums, and charts how these individuals explained, enriched, and complicated the public’s understanding of Native American cultures. Confronting the notion of anthropologists as either “good” or “bad,” this study shows that the reality on the ground was much messier and more nuanced. Further, by an in-depth examination of the lives of a host of Native collaborators who chose to work with anthropologists in documenting the tangible and intangible cultural heritage materials of Native American communities, this study complicates the idea that anthropologists were the sole creators of representations of American Indians prevalent in museum exhibitions, lectures, and publications. -

(Brown 1953, 1989) 1 | Page Mohegan Foodways Meehan INTRODUCTION Located in the northeastern area of North America, or Turtle Island as many Indian nations refer to it, the Mohegan Tribe is a federally recognized, Algonquin descent, Indian tribe in southeastern Connecticut situated upon what is now known as the Thames River. Once known by local Indian tribes as the Great River, this great river is fed by three large rivers that frame old Mohegan hunting grounds. The original settlement of this Eastern Woodland Mohegan Tribe on this western bank of the Great River today, Shantok Fort of Uncas (Shantok) is located in Uncasville, a section of Montville named for Mohegan’s seventeenth century Sachem Uncas. In the rolling hills and rich soil of Uncasville, Connecticut, the Mohegan community is rich in oral tradition winding through a communal value system that fosters tribal commitment to care for past, present and future generations of Mohegan. Framed by written and unwritten cultural policy, this communal value system corbels the foodways of Mohegan around the spiritual center of Mohegan community atop Mohegan Hill, building course upon course focusing the lens on the center of this space in the rolling green hills of Mohegan’s homeland. While not a complete, exhaustive, all‐encompassing study of Mohegan foodways, this project is an attempt to bring together bits and pieces of research about Mohegan traditions that involve food in a ceremonial or spiritual way, or in a nutritional way, or in a utilitarian way. -

NAE-246608-OLS-20, Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut The Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut 1. STATEMENT OF NEED The Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut (MTIC) is applying for a Preservation and Revitalization Project named “Seed Saver, Story Saver.” The Mohegan Tribe’s reservation is located in Uncasville, Connecticut. The tribe has 2200 members, about half of whom live in-state, near, or on our 595.5-acre reservation on the Thames River. Our audience includes all Mohegans, as well as Natives from the Mashantucket Pequot, Eastern Pequot, and Narragansett Tribes, and our 2,000+ annual museum-goers (ages 1-100, hailing from all over the world, but especially local school children and CT residents). MTIC’s own educational level is rising, with 150 members attending vocational or academic programs beyond high school annually, which has helped expand public awareness of our museum. The main language spoken by Mohegans is English, although MTIC is working to revitalize and preserve our indigenous Mohegan-Pequot language. For the last century, southern New England tribes have participated in collaborative organizations like the Algonquian Indian Council, Native American Heritage Advisory Committee, and United South and Eastern Tribes, Mohegan Tribal members have been honored at the Narragansett Tribe’s Tomaquag Museum’s Honoring Dinner, and storytellers from Narragansett particpate in our tribe’s culture week, such as Paula Dove Jennings, who wrote a book called “The Strawberry Thanksgiving.” We also share seeds with local tribes. The culture at our tribe’s Tantaquidgeon Museum is one of “Education for all.” This museum has always been free and open to the public since its founding in 1931, and representatives from Narragansett and Pequot attended that opening event nearly a century ago, just as they still attend our festivals today.
