During World War II, the Nazis put their long-held plans of annihilating the Jews from Europe into action. Members of other groups they believed to be inferior were also targeted, such as those with developmental or mental issues, Romani, homosexuals, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Many people are of the opinion that their victims went to their fates passively, sometimes described with the cliché of going “like a lamb to the slaughter”. The well-known Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is widely recognized as one of the few, if not only, attempts at resistance. While it is true that many of the doomed did not resist much, if at all, important considerations to keep in mind are that for the most part these individuals were unarmed due to Nazi-imposed gun control laws, they were minorities who were vastly outnumbered, and many of their neighbors were either Nazi sympathizers or outright collaborators themselves. It is also important to note that their captors constantly and deliberately lied to these people, routinely telling them they were going to work camps for a short time, or sent them to live in other areas, when in truth death was their ultimate predetermined destination. -

Ethnic cleansing focused mainly on the Jewish community and has been spoken of the loudest since the end of the war, but this was not the only course of eugenic thought. People who had been harmed by birth – the disabled and mentally ill, were not spared the torturers wearing German uniforms. Th is article presents the circumstances involved relating to the activities of AktionT4 in Germany and the territories under German occupation, and performs a legal analysis of these activities in the light of international law in the so-called Doctors’ Trial, the fi rst of the follow-up processes to Th e Nuremburgh Trial. Th e author in- troduces the legal bases of the sentences issued in the trial and highlights the process of shaping the re- sponsibility of individuals in international law. Th e participation of Polish law enforcement agencies in prosecuting crimes against humanity committed on the patients of psychiatric hospitals and care centers in Poland, is also addressed. Th e proceedings in this case have been ongoing to this day, now conducted under the auspices of the Institute of National Remembrance. This course also focuses on other destructive crimes carried out by Nazi Germany, including the mass murder of the Gypsies and the mental- ly and physically handicapped. Nurses and Midwives in Nazi Germany This book is about the ethics of nursing and midwifery, and how these were abrogated during the Nazi era. Nurses and midwives actively killed their patients, many of whom were disabled children and infants and patients with mental (and other) illnesses or intellectual disabilities. The book gives the facts as well as theoretical perspectives as a lens through which these crimes can be viewed. It also provides a way to teach this history to nursing and midwifery students, and, for the first time, explains the role of one of the world's most historically prominent midwifery leaders in the Nazi crimes. The Council’s goal is to make the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum the principal center supporting Holocaust studies in the United States. The Center’s programs include research and publication projects designed to shed new light on Holocaust-related subjects that have been studied previously, to fill gaps in the literature, and to make access to study of the Holocaust easier for new and established scholars and for the general public. the quest for racial purity: Germans with Mental and Physical Disabilities, African Germans, and Roma rom the moment that hitler took power in germany, he began implementing his vision for a new Germany—one that elevated “Aryan” Germans to the top of the Nazis’ racial hierarchy and that ranked all other groups along a spectrum of relative inferiority. Nazi leaders wasted no time conceiving and adopting measures that would safeguard the “Aryan” German race, thereby ensuring that future genera- tions would be—in their eyes—racially pure, genetically healthy, and socially productive and loyal to the state. This goal meant, above all, stigmatizing, discriminating against, and ultimately killing those whom the Nazis identified as being biologically and racially flawed. In such a context, especially Jews (see chapter 5), but also Roma (Gypsies), people with mental and physical disabilities, and African Germans, faced direct and immediate danger at the hands of the Nazis. In time, the Nazi decision to go to war would advance those long-term goals in pre- viously unimaginable ways. Territorial acquisition went hand in hand with population engineering as the Nazis sought to increase the number of “Aryan” Germans while simul- taneously thinning the ranks of those they considered inferior by virtue of race or biology. The state of national emergency created by the war would eventually provide the pretext and cover for increasingly radical steps. Nazi racial persecution was unique, for there was no escape—not even for those who were German by birth—from the harsh verdict of inferiority. For those who were targeted, national loyalty or communal solidarity were of no consequence: only “Aryans” who met the racial and biological standards of the Nazis could claim membership in the National Community (Volksgemeinschaft). -

Newman* INTRODUCTION Taboos and unwritten social rules surrounding death, suicide and euthanasia have strangled candid discussion of these related topics for many years. Euthanasia-acting to produce a merciful death-has been a matter for whispered conversation among doctors, occasionally practiced1 but only recently publicly raised as a matter for "proper" debate. The grip of silence has been dramatically broken by various events, most notably: " the publication in a 1988 issue of the Journalof the American Med- ical Association of an article by an anonymous doctor recounting his administration of a lethal dose of morphine to a woman dying of 2 ovarian cancer, entitled It's Over, Debbie " a statement published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1989 by ten doctors associated with the nation's leading hospitals and medical schools declaring their belief that "it is not immoral for a physician to assist in the rational suicide of a terminally ill person" " the publication in 1991 in the New England Journal of Medicine of * Professor of Law, New York Law School.
