A Cultural Analysis Through Sound Supervisors: Thomas Palaima, Ph. D and Richard Brennes For the second half of the 20th century, Austin, Texas was defined by its culture and unique personality. The traits that defined the city ushered in a progressive community that was seldom found in the South. In the 1960s, much of the new and young demographic chose music as the medium to share ideas and find community. The following decades saw Austin become a mecca for live music. Austin’s changing culture became defined by the music heard in the plethora of music venues that graced the city streets. As the city recruited technology companies and developed its downtown, live music suffered. People from all over the world have moved to Austin, in part because of the unique culture and live music. The mass-migration these individuals took part in led to the downfall of the music industry in Austin. This thesis will explore the rise of music in Austin, its direct ties with culture, and the eventual loss of culture. Moody, Jr. and Libbie Rice Shearn Moody. The Moodys were prosperous, and their enterprises initially flour- ished on Galveston Island. Their commercial interests included banks, newspapers, cotton, ranches, hotels and insurance. Over the years, their efforts continued to expand across Texas, helping to shape their vision for the Foundation of building a bigger, better future for Texans. The Moodys’ wish for the Foundation was an ever- lasting commitment to present and future generations of Texans. For more than seven decades, the philanthropic heritage of the William Lewis Moody, Jr. Moody Family has been at the forefront of the Foundation. There’s a charitable spirit that seems to pass from generation to generation, growing stronger over time. After W.L. Moody, Jr. died in 1954, his oldest daughter, Mary Elizabeth Moody Northen, took over at the Foundation. -

July 28, 2014 The gifts — including the foundation’s largest single contribution to UTMB — were announced during Drs. George and Blossom Sanger and campus celebrations of the official groundbreaking for the hospital. The $25.5 million commitment Their Family Give To UTMB includes a $16.5 million commitment that will be used to construct and equip the intensive care complex in Jennie Sealy Hospital, which will have 54 dedicated intensive care beds and the latest May 23, 2014 technology to help patients recover from serious illness or injury. McComb, Professor of History Colorado State UniversitY Foresight Built the Rosenberg Library's Archives Casey Greene The Rosenberg Lib rary in Galveston has long been recogn rzed, for its significant historical collection$. In 1923, the Southwestern His- torical Quarterly called them "a veritable treasure, undoubtedly the most important in the State except those at Austin."r Today, they constitute the core of the Galveston and Texas History Center, one of the Library's most prestigious departments. The genesis of this collection predates the opening of the Rosenberg Library's building to the public in 1904. On August 3, lB7 l, some twelve men founded the Galveston Historical Society, adopting the constitution and by-laws of the New York Historical Society. They sought to acquire and preserve papers, maps, and artifacts "that may serve to illustrate the general history of Texas, and of localities and events therein."2 The founders had the foresight to reco gnize the value of documentary materials that would likely have been lost or destroyed in later years. By 1875, they had collected a variety of papers, including those of Lorenzo de Zavala, the first vice president of the Republic of Texas; those of merchant and land agent James Morgan, as well as a narrative of the Mier Expedition by Joseph D. McCutchan.3 The Galveston His- torical Society engaged in periods of activity followed by inactivity. In 1895, it reorganized as the Texas Historical Society, which aimed to acquire and preserve archival materials and artifacts relating to Texas history. -
