www.mission.ca Mission has been invited by the National Communi- ties in Bloom organization to compete in the 20,000 to 50,000 population. This is a big step for Mission, and we will be judged by 2 National judges instead of 2 Provincial judges. The competition is more intense and there are more towns in our category.

2009 National Competitors Population: 20,001 - 55,000 Leduc, AB – Winner - 5 Blooms - Community Connectivity and Well-Being Campbell River, BC - 5 Blooms - Volunteer Effort - Conservation & Community Culture - HHCI Award Corner Brook, NL - 4 Blooms - Corner Brook Stream Trail System Conservation Efforts Fort Erie, ON - 5 Blooms - Recognizing Community Participation in Floral Displays West Kelowna, BC - 5 Blooms - Community Resiliency and Cooperation

The last 5 years have been great. In 2007 Mission received a special mention for “Environmental Aware- ness” and the Provincial CinB award for “Community Involvement”. In 2008 we accepted with great pride an increase in points earning us 5 of 5 blooms and the provincial award for “Heritage Awareness. In 2009 we received 5 of 5 blooms with higher points, and the Provincial Award for the population of 20,000 to 50,000.

CinB is a Canada-wide program to recognize and foster civic pride. After our Local Competition, June 20 - 26, National CinB judges will visit Mission to judge our collective effort. Judges will award one to five “Bloom Ratings” for our achievements in Floral Displays, Landscaped Areas, Turf and Groundcover Areas, Urban Forestry, Community Involvement, Heritage Preservation, Environmental, and Tidiness Effort.

Mission Community Foundation is honoured to display the unique Sweeney Collection each year in the Leisure Centre during the month of May. William P. and Hilde Sweeney of Forestville, California in 1990 had a Memorandum of Understanding written and bequested the donation of artifacts which were received in 2005 to be exhibited as promised. William died in1998 and Hilde in 2005. The Sweeney’s were collectors of Eskimo and Indian art (soapstone, wood, serpentine, caribou bone and antler) by various artists. From 1971 to 1985 they operated Sweeney’s Open Book store in Santa Rosa and started carrying various art objects expanding their collection. Bill was a radio personality. Hilde was an active volunteer after retiring. “We definitely felt that all the Indian and Eskimo artifacts should go “home” to where, we hope, they will be most appreciated”, Hilde said. They kept their promise, we keep our promise and now you should promise to go see with your own eyes the beautiful Sweeney Collection.
