    FNESS Strategic Plan

    Strategic Plan 2013-2015 At a Glance FNESS evolved from the Society of Native Indian Fire Fighters of BC (SNIFF), which was established in 1986. SNIFF’s initial objectives were to help reduce the number of fire-related deaths on First Nations reserves, but it changed its emphasis to incorporate a greater spectrum of emergency services. In 1994, SNIFF changed its name to First Nations’ Emergency Services Society of BC to reflect the growing diversity of services it provides. Today our organization continues to gain recognition and trust within First Nations communities and within Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) and other organizations. A complete set of biographies to remain in Orkney with Society. George Aitken [variation: Aiken ] (c.1815-?) [sett-Willamette] HBC employee, British: Orcadian Scot, b. c. August 20, 1815 in "Greenay", Birsay, Orkney, North Britain [U.K.] to Alexander (?-?) and Margaret [Johnston] Aiken (?-?), d. (date and place not traced), associated with: Fort Vancouver general charges (l84l-42) blacksmith Fort Stikine (l842-43) blacksmith steamer Beaver (l843-44) blacksmith Fort Vancouver (l844-45) blacksmith Fort Vancouver Depot (l845-49) blacksmith Columbia (l849-50) Columbia (l850-52) freeman Twenty one year old Orcadian blacksmith, George Aiken, signed on with the Hudson's Bay Company February 27, l836 and sailed to York Factory where he spent outfits 1837-40; he then moved to and worked at Norway House in 1840-41 before being assigned to the Columbia District in 1841. Aiken worked quietly and competently in the Columbia district mainly at coastal forts and on the steamer Beaver as a blacksmith until March 1, 1849 at which point he went to California, most certainly to participate in the Gold Rush. He appears to have returned to settle in the Willamette Valley and had an association with the HBC until 1852. Aiken's family life or subsequent activities have not been traced.

The Society operate the Village's only senior housing facility, specifically developed as affordable rental housing for low-income seniors. Telkwa House has enjoyed a high level of success since opening its doors in 2012, with all of its original residents still occupying the 8 units that were built from the Olympic Village storage container housing modules.The Society is now embarking upon planning forthe development of a future facility that mirrors their existing facility in both design and intent. Society and development team documentation is attached as Appendix ”A”. The Need and Demand assessment attached as Appendix”B” identifies a growing need among Te|kwa’s low-income senior population for affordable housing.
