    TO MAKE GOOD CANADIANS: GIRL GUIDING IN INDIAN RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS A Thesis Submitted to the Committee on Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences TRENT UNIVERSITY Peterborough, Ontario, Canada © Copyright by Mary Jane McCallum 2001 Canadian Studies and Native Studies M.A. Program May2002 ABSTRACT To Make Good Canadians: Girl Guiding in Indian Residential Schools Mary Jane McCallum Between 1910 and 1970, the Guide movement became active and, indeed, prolific in Indian residential, day, and hostel schools, sanatoriums, reserves and Northern communities throughout Canada. In these contexts, Guiding embraced not only twentieth century youth citizenship training schemes, but also the colonial project of making First Nations and Inuit people good citizens. But ironically, while the Guide programme endeavoured to produce moral, disciplined and patriotic girls who would be prepared to undertake home and civic responsibilities as dutiful mothers and wives, it also encouraged girls to study and imitate 'wild' Indians. This thesis will explore the ways in which Girl Guides prepared girls for citizenship, arguing that the Indian, who signified to Guides authentic adventure, primitive skills and civic duty, was a model for their training. 'Playing Indian' enabled Guides to access these 'authentic' Indian virtues. It also enabled them to deny their roles as proponents of colonialism.     Making Fire with Flint and Steel. Early Failures Many survival or scouting books give different instructions on how one can start a fire with flint and steel. These books suggest various materials that are supposed to catch the spark (punk – the powdery dry rot from the insides of fallen logs, cottonwood fluff, fine dry grass, fine wood shavings, dry moss, and various lichens. The people who wrote those books had obviously never tried it. None of these materials work well, although they all make excellent small kindling once you have a fire started. Problem Solved The Oxford Universal Dictionary defines tinder as "a flammable substance used to kindle a fire, especially charred linen". When a spark hits charred cloth, it creates a tiny red spot, which slowly grows like a glowing fairy ring. It is impossible to blow out; in fact, the more wind there is the better, as the spark simply gets hotter and hotter. The only way to put it out is by suffocation (which preserves the rest of the charred cloth for future use), or by dousing it with water (which ruins the char cloth). The amazing thing is that charred cloth in windy weather makes it easier to start a fire with flint and steel than a match. Well, almost! Making Charred Cloth Here is how to put together your own tinder box, so that you can make a fire the same way that people did two hundred years ago. First, you will need some cloth. Linen is the traditional fabric, but 100% cotton works just fine, and it is a lot cheaper! Do not use synthetic or synthetic blend fabrics.

    Summary of Sexual Abuse Claims in Chapter 11 Cases of Boy Scouts of America There are approximately 101,135sexual abuse claims filed. Of those claims, the Tort Claimants’ Committee estimates that there are approximately 83,807 unique claims if the amended and superseded and multiple claims filed on account of the same survivor are removed. The summary of sexual abuse claims below uses the set of 83,807 of claim for purposes of claims summary below.1 The Tort Claimants’ Committee has broken down the sexual abuse claims in various categories for the purpose of disclosing where and when the sexual abuse claims arose and the identity of certain of the parties that are implicated in the alleged sexual abuse. Attached hereto as Exhibit 1 is a chart that shows the sexual abuse claims broken down by the year in which they first arose. Please note that there approximately 10,500 claims did not provide a date for when the sexual abuse occurred. As a result, those claims have not been assigned a year in which the abuse first arose. Attached hereto as Exhibit 2 is a chart that shows the claims broken down by the state or jurisdiction in which they arose. Please note there are approximately 7,186 claims that did not provide a location of abuse. Those claims are reflected by YY or ZZ in the codes used to identify the applicable state or jurisdiction. It is interesting when one considers “club” publications and their timing, etc. Like most people I am a member of several clubs including, amongst others, The Great Eastern Railway Society. This is an historical society which studies the railway which built the network throughout East Anglia here in the UK. I was instrumental in founding the Society back in 1973 and it has always been one of my interests. The Society publish two magazines, both on a quarterly basis - on alternate quarters throughout the year. The people there don’t seem to get so hung up on the dates of publication because I have just received the January, 2010 issue of their Journal. I mentioned the forthcoming World Jamboree in the last issue and our attempts to share a base / stand with the International Badgers Club. We have now finally heard from one of the organisers, who has been given responsibility for an Historic Exhibition at the event, saying that we are welcome to assist but we must become members of our National Contingent for IST and apply through that. Needless to say the UK has long since selected their Contingents so we have had to reluctantly decline the invitation - but have offered assistance if there is anything particular which is needed. I will end this editorial with thanks for the small supply of new articles and a request for more.

During 1949 to 1950 Dr. Adelson served as a Research Fellow in Pathology and Legal Medicine in the Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard Medical School where much of the research was done for his present article. The author is a member of the Academy of Forensic Sciences.-EDITOR. Spontaneous human combustion is that phenomenon wherein the body takes fire without an outside source of heat and is rapidly reduced to a handful of greasy ashes. Paradoxically, inanimate objects nearby escape relatively unharmed. Preternatural combustibility implies a similar situation, differing from the spontaneous variety in that a spark or a minute flame is necessary to ignite the body which then undergoes incineration.

Joining over Coming Events 12-13 7500 Scouts, 24 Guides and their Leaders met the Down in your Archives 14 Governor General (Chief Scout) and his wife (Chief Women of Note 14 Guide), got lost in Echuca, visited a Bendigo mine, Gone Home 15 took on Ned Kelly in the bush, played volleyball and Campsites 15 various other games in the mud, drove cars, flew in Campsite Vacancies 15 light planes, conquered the largest water slide in Australia, talked to astronauts on the international Guide Shop 16 space station, abseiled, rock-climbed and experienced enough fun and adventure for a lifetime. DEADLINE Editorial contributions for Nightly entertainment included the bands, Rogue Traders, March Communicating close: Evermore and Bjorn Again, some comedy from Tripod, Fri 09 February, 2007 karaoke and Scout Idol and a stunning display of fireworks. Guide Leaders were involved in many aspects of running the camp such as first aid, catering, entertainment, the internet café as well as those in the troop, with the girls.
