A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Fogel A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

  • Foregrounding Female Agency in the Dance Culture of Nigeria
WHAT I DO WHEN I DANCE: FOREGROUNDING FEMALE AGENCY IN THE DANCE CULTURE OF NIGERIA Oladoyin Abiona A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2021 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Jeremy Wallach Rahdika Gajjala © 2021 Oladoyin Abiona All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor Scholarship on female representations in hip hop has been predominantly premised on the sexualization of the female body. By focusing mainly on this singular aspect of the genre, we reduce the whole essence of womanhood in the industry to such interpretations. The limited scope of such discussions deprives the women of opportunities to tell their own stories of what they do when they dance. Seeing the cultural significance of dance as a form of popular culture in the Nigerian context, this essay, from a feminist perspective, closes this gap by engaging in a qualitative exploration of the lives of three female dancers in Nigeria telling their stories through dance. They are Kaffayat Oluwatoyin Shafau (Kaffy), Odumewu Debbie (Debbiepinkie), and Usiwo Orezinena Jane (Janemena). Exploring their social media archives, interviews granted to TV stations and a published autobiography “Alajoota” by Kaffy, this essay contextualizes and complicates the interpretations of sexualization in the Nigerian hip hop dance industry. Through dance Nigerian women performers are able to negotiate the heavily male-dominated hip hop scene. For them, dance is a coping strategy, a profession, a space for redefining self and embracing sexuality and femininity, and a form of youthful identity and inclusion.

  • Bike Polo Story
FORewoRD The game of bicycle polo was conceived in 1891 and is a direct descendant of the very ancient game of horse polo which dates back to 600 BC, and the modern game of hardcourt bike polo - one of the world’s fastest growing urban sports is considered the edgier first cousin of the 19th century grass version. From its genesis in late 19th century Ireland through to its modern day incarnation, this book unravels the history of this fascinating and misunderstood sport. It charts key moments, explores the games pioneers and gets under the skin of some of today’s star exponents. And there are some surprises along the way… Before Hoy, Pendleton, Farah and Ennis cast a golden glow over London 2012, 104 years earlier, bike polo pedalled into the 1908 London Olympics as an exhibition sport. And it may surprise you to know that Princes; Phillip, Wills and Harry have all be known to ditch the horse in favour of the bike… This is the compelling and eventful story of the history of bike polo. Enjoy the journey… 1891 Bicycle Polo, a game of strenuous amusement is born... n 1891, having retired from racing – ‘ordinary’ and tricycle – the Irish cycling Ienthusiast Richard J McCready (hereafter referred to as ‘RJ’) set about inventing a game that would provide ‘strenuous amusement’ and a welcome diversion from editing his beloved Irish Cyclist. His invention? ‘Polo on Wheels’. Following the inaugural game at the Scalp in Co. Wicklow, Richard J McCready Cycling magazine observed the following: “the game of cycling polo promises to be immensely popular…and not at all so dangerous as would appear from the title.” Quick to show his hand was the mysterious Cosmo- Cyclo who wrote an enthusiastic letter published in Cycling stating that since the introduction of pneumatic tyres “cycle polo is not only possible but exciting and enjoyable too!” In Ireland, the sport rapidly gained momentum, with the wider racing fraternity quickly picking up on the benefits of a game that would efficiently hone “..the hands, the head and the eye..” of the racing man.

ABSTRACT Tourism market is one of the vibrant non-financial sectors in Nigeria, which is challenged by non-availability of financial resources from the banking sector - one of the components of the financial system. To this extent, this paper helps to examine factors that influence financial institutions’ participation in tourism project; case of Lagos street carnival. For financial institutions to participate successfully in tourism project, it requires financial support from financial institutions (banks) to showcase, promote, uplift and to financially-support the nourished culture, norms and values the people cherish; and to ensure that the beliefs of the people are not eroded by foreign culture and above all, to stimulate the economy. The primary source of data is adopted via structured questionnaire. Statistically, the estimated parameter are mean, standard deviation, and standard error (ẟ√N). The responses of the respondents gathered via the questionnaire was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
