Coast to Coast
Coast to Coast “You xxxx” I shouted – more than once if remember correctly. My ire was directed at Raz. We were zipping along a disused railway line between Keswick and Penrith when he suddenly screamed to a halt right in front of me leaving me almost no time to avoid him and get my feet out of the pedal stops and avoid a nasty case of gravel rash. He’d seen a pound coin and had to stop to claim it. I’d have given him a pound if I’d known he was that hard up! This was the first of three days on the Coast to Coast (C2C) bike ride. Dan, Raz and I were the riders with Zoe in the vital support role. Ade was supposed to be with us but Sarah’s broken ankle (one of their dogs knocked her over) just days before meant he had to pull out. It simplified the logistics but Ade missed an entertaining trip. Accommodation in the usual starting place (Whitehaven) was limited so we started at St Bees. Our drive there with our three bikes on the back of the Focus was in the dry much to our surprise. Not that Raz and I noticed much of the journey! We kept our fingers crossed for the weather! Quickly dumping our bags in the Fairladies Barn Guest house, we rode off to the beach to dip our wheels ceremonially in the Irish Sea. The pub meal we had was frankly pretty awful and when we emerged, it was raining. In the night there was apparently a major storm with power cuts but all we noticed was that our telly came on in the middle of the night as power was restored. -

Popular political oratory and itinerant lecturing in Yorkshire and the North East in the age of Chartism, 1837-60 Janette Lisa Martin This thesis is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of York Department of History January 2010 ABSTRACT Itinerant lecturers declaiming upon free trade, Chartism, temperance, or anti- slavery could be heard in market places and halls across the country during the years 1837- 60. The power of the spoken word was such that all major pressure groups employed lecturers and sent them on extensive tours. Print historians tend to overplay the importance of newspapers and tracts in disseminating political ideas and forming public opinion. This thesis demonstrates the importance of older, traditional forms of communication. Inert printed pages were no match for charismatic oratory. Combining personal magnetism, drama and immediacy, the itinerant lecturer was the most effective medium through which to reach those with limited access to books, newspapers or national political culture. Orators crucially united their dispersed audiences in national struggles for reform, fomenting discussion and coalescing political opinion, while railways, the telegraph and expanding press reportage allowed speakers and their arguments to circulate rapidly. Understanding of political oratory and public meetings has been skewed by over- emphasis upon the hustings and high-profile politicians. This has generated two misconceptions: that political meetings were generally rowdy and that a golden age of political oratory was secured only through Gladstone’s legendary stumping tours. However, this thesis argues that, far from being disorderly, public meetings were carefully regulated and controlled offering disenfranchised males a genuine democratic space for political discussion. -

There is no town in Britain with this number of railway paths and there is no town in Britain with greater opportunity to cycle out into the open countryside on almost level routes which are safe, attractive and memorable – to the high moors at Rookhope, down to the Tyne at Derwenthaugh, to Stanley and Sunderland on the C2C route, and to Lanchester and Durham. -

North East / North West C2C the UK’S Most Popular Challenge Cycle Route

The iconic route travels 137 miles be- tween the Irish Sea and the North Sea, from Cumbria to Tyneside, passing through the northern Lake District before climbing the Pennines and descending to the rail- way paths of County Durham. Whitehaven – Keswick – Penrith (53 miles) Penrith – Alston – Rookhope (43 miles) Rookhope – Winlaton Mill – Tynemouth (44 miles) The Sea to Sea (C2C) can start at either Whitehaven or Workington, and has two possible endpoints on the North Sea coast in Sunderland or Tynemouth. There are some sections of the Whitehaven to Sunderland route that are not part of the National Cycle Network. Route sections from West to East (Whitehaven to Sunderland) 1. Whitehaven to Keswick Starting at Whitehaven; an old seaport on the west coast of Cumbria. The first ten miles of the C2C follows a well made surfaced path. Quiet lanes follow as the route passes through some of the countries most beautiful scenery. Kirkland and Lamplugh reveal the proximity of the Lakes mountains and on the steep descent from Fangs Brow to Loweswater there is a good view of Mellbreaks ahead. The Whinlatter Pass is the first major climb ending in a fine descent on forest roads to Bass Lake and Keswick. 2. Keswick to Langwathby The next section takes the route on to Langwathby in the Eden Valley and has contrasting views and riding surfaces. Alternate routes exist here, with the hardest one crossing Matterdale Common on the Old Coach Road to Greystoke, Blencow and the town of Penrith, reaching Langwathby on the Eden. -

During the mid to late 20th century the site was developed as part of the Consett Iron Works. The works were present on historic mapping between the 1960s and 1980s but were subsequently demolished and the site cleared and levelled before being laid out as an industrial park. Prior to the construction of the iron works, the site was within an area of quarrying and railway sidings associated with the iron works. The site has a negligible potential for the presence of heritage assets with archaeological interest. There are no recorded heritage assets within the site. The proposed development site is within the setting of grade II* listed Hownes Gill Viaduct, Grade II listed Railway Accommodation Arch and Grade II listed farmhouse and barn at High Knitsley Farm. An analysis of the contribution made by setting to the value of these assets has concluded that there would be no harm to the heritage values of Hownes Gill Viaduct or the Railway Accommodation Arch, as both lack intervisibility with the proposed scheme and are assets that have close links to the industrial heritage of the area which would not be impacted by the proposed development. -

Experiencing mental ill health can be frightening, leading to isolation and feelings of hopelessness. Unlike many other illnesses, it is not visible or always apparent and does not evoke the feelings of compassion or concern that those suffering from more visible illnesses often receive. For many, mental ill health is a temporary experience. With the care of family and friends, and medical support where required, most individuals can be helped through their difficulties. Some people, however, may need continuing assistance. The very word “mental” can be enough to stigmatise those who experience mental ill health. This applies particularly to younger people, where it is often an additional burden.
