Coast to Coast
Coast to Coast “You xxxx” I shouted – more than once if remember correctly. My ire was directed at Raz. We were zipping along a disused railway line between Keswick and Penrith when he suddenly screamed to a halt right in front of me leaving me almost no time to avoid him and get my feet out of the pedal stops and avoid a nasty case of gravel rash. He’d seen a pound coin and had to stop to claim it. I’d have given him a pound if I’d known he was that hard up! This was the first of three days on the Coast to Coast (C2C) bike ride. Dan, Raz and I were the riders with Zoe in the vital support role. Ade was supposed to be with us but Sarah’s broken ankle (one of their dogs knocked her over) just days before meant he had to pull out. It simplified the logistics but Ade missed an entertaining trip. Accommodation in the usual starting place (Whitehaven) was limited so we started at St Bees. Our drive there with our three bikes on the back of the Focus was in the dry much to our surprise. Not that Raz and I noticed much of the journey! We kept our fingers crossed for the weather! Quickly dumping our bags in the Fairladies Barn Guest house, we rode off to the beach to dip our wheels ceremonially in the Irish Sea. The pub meal we had was frankly pretty awful and when we emerged, it was raining. In the night there was apparently a major storm with power cuts but all we noticed was that our telly came on in the middle of the night as power was restored. -

There is no town in Britain with this number of railway paths and there is no town in Britain with greater opportunity to cycle out into the open countryside on almost level routes which are safe, attractive and memorable – to the high moors at Rookhope, down to the Tyne at Derwenthaugh, to Stanley and Sunderland on the C2C route, and to Lanchester and Durham. -

North Eastern Railway Civil Engineering Drawings List Description: The collection includes a minority of architectural plans, along with drawings of structures such as bridges and viaducts, maps of permanent way routes and alterations, signalling plans and diagrams, with a variety of miscellaneous components for structures and infrastructure. The collection comprises approximately 3500 plans, diagrams and maps on paper, wax linen and linen- backed cartridge paper. System of arrangement: The original arrangement of the drawings has been lost and they derive from a wide variety of applications within the architectural and civil engineering genres. The drawings have therefore been listed in the rolls in which they were found, and every effort made to record the variety of numbering systems used at different times by the railway company departments involved in creating and storing the drawings, representative of the different types of drawing. There is no one single and consistent numbering arrangement. Physical Characteristics: The drawings survive in a variety of formats and sizes – there are wax linen tracings, colour washed linenbacked original office drawings, drawings on cartridge paper, blueprints and other copying processes. Administrative/Biographical History: The North Eastern Railway Company was formed in 1854 as an amalgamation of the York & North Midland Railway, the Leeds Northern Railway and the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway. It continued to absorb other companies in the north eastern region of England over subsequent decades, including the Stockton & Darlington Railway, South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway and the West Hartlepool Railway. In 1923 the various railway companies of the United Kingdom were grouped into four large amalgamations. -

A short history of the route By Charlie Walton Chairman of the Partnership The Bishop Line Community Rail Partnership is very proud to cover the route of the legendary Stockton and Darlington Railway, the first public railway to be empowered by Parliament to convey goods and passengers by steam traction in the country. The first train hauled by the iconic “Locomotion No1” ran on the 27 th September 1825 from the Mason’s Arms Public House at Shildon at the base of the rope hauled Brusselton Incline all the way to Stockton some 30 miles to the east. The S&DR’s original route served the collieries of south west Durham by bringing coal in chaldron wagons to the coal staithes at Stockton. Indeed, coal was the life blood of the line until it was absorbed into the North Eastern Railway in 1863. It is not widely known but it is said that the S&DR was the most profitable British railway company before 1860. Shildon, now the home of the National Railway Museum’s sister museum appropriately named “Locomotion”, was the hub of the S&DR system where the early railway pioneer Timothy Hackworth, the S&DR’s locomotive superintendent, established the S&DR’s works and his Soho Locomotive Works. One of the unsung heroes of the early railways, Timothy Hackworth strove to develop engines that were powerful, robust, reliable and safe. His “Royal George” six coupled engine of 1827 proved once and for all the supremacy of steam traction over horses, being twice as economical. Indeed, the six coupled goods engine became the most common type on Britain’s railways in the years that followed. -

North East / North West C2C the UK’S Most Popular Challenge Cycle Route

The iconic route travels 137 miles be- tween the Irish Sea and the North Sea, from Cumbria to Tyneside, passing through the northern Lake District before climbing the Pennines and descending to the rail- way paths of County Durham. Whitehaven – Keswick – Penrith (53 miles) Penrith – Alston – Rookhope (43 miles) Rookhope – Winlaton Mill – Tynemouth (44 miles) The Sea to Sea (C2C) can start at either Whitehaven or Workington, and has two possible endpoints on the North Sea coast in Sunderland or Tynemouth. There are some sections of the Whitehaven to Sunderland route that are not part of the National Cycle Network. Route sections from West to East (Whitehaven to Sunderland) 1. Whitehaven to Keswick Starting at Whitehaven; an old seaport on the west coast of Cumbria. The first ten miles of the C2C follows a well made surfaced path. Quiet lanes follow as the route passes through some of the countries most beautiful scenery. Kirkland and Lamplugh reveal the proximity of the Lakes mountains and on the steep descent from Fangs Brow to Loweswater there is a good view of Mellbreaks ahead. The Whinlatter Pass is the first major climb ending in a fine descent on forest roads to Bass Lake and Keswick. 2. Keswick to Langwathby The next section takes the route on to Langwathby in the Eden Valley and has contrasting views and riding surfaces. Alternate routes exist here, with the hardest one crossing Matterdale Common on the Old Coach Road to Greystoke, Blencow and the town of Penrith, reaching Langwathby on the Eden. -

Introduction Introduction: The Land of Oak & Iron The Land of Oak & Iron Investing in Heritage: identifying, enhancing and managing the little known natural and industrial heritage; The Land of Oak & Iron is centred on the Derwent Valley, North East England. The area covers 177km 2 and is home to Investing in People: investing in people to develop skills, learn about the heritage and volunteer time; approximately 112,000 people. One end is more rural, bordering the Derwent Reservoir and North Pennines Area of Investing in Communities: improved access to and interpretation Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The boundary then of the heritage, reducing negative environmental impact, expanding engagement and ownership, and promoting the area follows the River Derwent down to the River Tyne where it is to make it a better place to live, work and visit. much more urban, bordering the edge of Newcastle and Gateshead, including the Metro Centre. The Land of Oak & Iron Landscape Partnership The Land of Oak & Iron Landscape Partnership comprises organisations from across the public, private and voluntary sectors who share the following vision: “Working with local communities to celebrate, conserve and enhance our natural, industrial and cultural heritage. The Way of Light Durham to Heavenfield
1 From Durham to Heavenfield Introduction This guide describes the pilgrimage route between the shrine of St Cuthbert at Durham Cathedral and Heavenfield. All the Northern Saints Trails use the same waymark shown on the left. The total distance is 72 kilometres or 45 miles. The route is divided into five sections of between 8 to 18 kilometres in distance. The route was originally described from Heavenfield to Durham, so walking in this direction you will follow the sections in reverse order. There is no public transport close to places on the 18 kilometre section between Blanchland and Hexham. Points of interest are described in red. This route has particular associations with three of the northern saints. Durham Cathedral is dedicated to St Cuthbert and there is a story about St Cuthbert from Lanchester and a pile of stones bearing his name on the moors between Edmundbyers and Blanchland. Hexham is strongly associated with St Wilfrid and the route ends at Heavenfield which is a sacred site associated with St Oswald. Heavenfield is also the start or the finish of St Oswald’s Way between Heavenfield and Lindisfarne. For the dedicated walker, combining The Way of Light with St Oswald’s Way provides a 142 mile route between the Durham and Lindisfarne - the two most important pilgrimage sites in the region. There are a number of reasons why the name Way of Light has been chosen for this route. The Way of Light is characterised by spaciousness and wide expansive views across the moors and hills you cross on your way to Heavenfield. -

Hownsgill Park Energy Facility 7. LANDSCAPE AND VISUAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT 7.1 Introduction 7.1.1 Enzygo Limited (Enzygo) has been commissioned by Project Genesis Limited to undertake landscape and visual impact assessment (LVIA) to support a planning application for a proposed energy facility at Hownsgill Industrial Estate. The LVIA is summarised in this chapter and forms part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) undertaken for this project. 7.1.2 The application site is located at Hownsgill Park Consett, DH8 7EQ. The site measures approximately 1.64 hectares in area. The site is currently undeveloped but forms part of the surrounding Hownsgill Park industrial area which is included in the local development plan as land suitable for ‘prestige industrial development’. 7.2 Aims and Objectives 7.2.1 The aim of this assessment is to appraise the likely effects of the proposed development on the landscape and views. The assessment will identify the existing landscape character and visual amenity resource, the likely effects of the proposals on this baseline situation and determine the residual effects of the proposals on landscape character and visual amenity and the significance. 7.2.2 This chapter is structured as follows. Section 7.3 includes relevant legislation, landscape planning policy and guidance; Section 7.4 provides the assessment methodology Section 7.5 describes the baseline conditions Section 7.6 describes the identification and evaluation of impacts Section 7.7 describes the design response and identifies mitigation; Section 7.8 includes an assessment of residual landscape and visual effects; Section 7.9 provides a summary and conclusion to the assessment. -
